I was in sales and training for Sun back in the day. Used to use current limiting waveform on gm hei systems to diagnose weakening hei modules. The Zener diode action would breakdown b4 module failure. 5.5 amps current limiting.

2005 Hyundai NF Sonata 2.0L Gasoline, 170Kmiles somehow shows very stable primary current waveforms but the peak current for all the 4 coils show steady 15A. Wonder if it is what it is or something else is going on. What would you say to 15A?

Interesting and useful review. Thanks very much. There's of course a lot of devil inthe detail. I often see a current "tail" in the negative direction at the point where the Driver turns off. What causes this tail? What is it's diagnostic value? It can be seen also in the prim & sec Voltage waveforms. It can be seen on known good systems too. I'm guessing is has something to do with left over energy in the coil, but I struggle to understand how current as opposed to polarity can run in reverse throught the system, as is suggested by a tail on a current ramp. Interested in your explanation. Cheers.

In regards to an ignition primary current ramp, you'll often find that if you zoom in on that "tail" it actually looks just like an ignition voltage pattern. The current probes we use to get these patterns are really nothing more than an antenna for the magnetic fields (and their related strength) formed in a wire when current is flowing through it. If you happen to be testing anywhere near the ignition coil, your probe will pick up and display those fields as well, so we get that tail. Next time you are checking primary current, move the probe further and further away from the coil and see what happens to your pattern. Once you get far enough away from the coil(s) you should see that it goes away completely. So there really is no current in the primary wiring running in reverse - your probe just picks up the secondary event when close to the coil.

USA,mazda 626 GE 2.0 L 1995 year.Mitsubishi ignition distributor with S1 hally sensor.Can someone help me with the correct electrical diagram of this thing.the commutator has a 6 pin connector and there is also a 3 pin connector on the side of the distributor.The injectors spray gasoline but there is no spark in the distributor car will not start.

You need some definitions like "saturated"? You're actually using the wrong terminology and in electrical engineering terms "saturated" refers to magnetic saturation of the iron core. A high ohm coil never gets to saturation, the current is limited by resistance. The final current = V/R, A low ohm coil , if it's over dwelled it gets past saturation and the current increases at a faster rate, the line starts going up steeper than before.
