There are so many great photographers producing great videos that I think you'd be much better off watching them.

Hi Chris, I just wanted to make clear that you are ABSOLUTELY good enough to make it as a pro (and by the sounds of things you’re doing amazingly already!). Hannah and I were having a chat the other day about just how hard it is to create a ‘style’ and we were talking about how many ‘professional’ photographers create images that conform to an ‘expected’ style that appeals to the masses and does well on social media. It’s easy enough to learn how to take those kind of images, but they have no real depth to them in my opinion. The hard thing is defining your own trademark style and this is something that you have achieved where many others struggle. Furthermore, there are plenty of highly talented photographers that make useless teachers and workshop leaders, but I can imagine you would be amazing at this side of the job. Being a ‘good’ photographer does not necessarily put someone in a position to be a good teacher or workshop leader, whereas being a professional photographer involves much more than just being a ‘good’ photographer and I have no doubt that you have the skills required. So please don’t take any criticism you have received to heart, you are doing an amazing job and we believe you are going to excel 😉. S.

Hey Sam, hope you and Hannah had a wonderful Christmas. I totally agree with you on the teaching thing. I think there are many things that you need to learn in order to be successful in this game. Chris, me again. Concentrate on your plan and style, ignore the hard critisism, not easy i know, but absolutely manageable. I went through an event back in august where i have been pushed in the corner about how bad my job was, how ridiculous i was looking on the stage and so on. It took me 4 days to recover, having been down to ground and feeling like shit. But there is a thing. The moment i reached the „wait aminute“ stage, I turned the situation around and took a lesson out of it. I was convinced i did a great job (sure i did), just faced a very ego loaded guy who was in such a lack of confidence that he was aiming to put the whole world down. I got back to myself and said i was on the right track until i met this guy, successful and facing towards growth. This guy cannot reach me anymore, in any way.Morality? You decided to take that path, you are facing towards growth, it is getting in shape, so what can you possibly do wrong? I promess you most of the critics actually mean „ if only i would be as brave as he is“.Trust me, you will get there, if you struggle, PM me! Keep going, great stuff

Hey, you've crossed 10.000 subscribers on KZbin - congratulations! Interesting how you differentiate "critique" and "criticism". As a non-native speaker (or more to the point, "writer") I never thought about it this way, I try to keep it in mind (and use it accordingly in the future).
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
Hi Christian - yeah, gone over 10K subs now. Generally in English "to criticise" is to pick out the faults in something. "To critique" is to provide a detailed analysis. Both words come from the same origin but it is generally accepted that criticism focuses on the negative whilst critique considers both positive and negative aspects. Apparently in French, German and Italian there is no distinction between the two words.
@c.augustin5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisSalePhoto We do have two different words in German that fit your distinction: "kritisieren" and "bekritteln" (the latter is used in a negative sense, while the former can be used both ways). Interestingly I didn't find "critique" as a verb in my go-to dictionary "LEO" (nor in Merriam Webster), and "to criticize/criticise" has both translations of "kritisieren" and "bekritteln" (I was astonished to find this translation, as I nearly never used this word for decades ;-)). This could mean that everyday use in the UK has shifted, and I've seen "critiquing" in US videos too … (dictionaries are quite slow, even though our "Duden" has tried to be more contemporary for some years now - with mixed results ;-)).

A Happy New Year to you Chris :) You are right about there being a difference between critisism and comment, and unfortunately it is something that you may encounter in your exhibition. I've had this experience - someone in the gallery openly slagging off my images to my face and ripping apart the paper choice, the mount cuts, and the frames being used AND it is hard at the time especially when up to that point the feedback was so positive. I think at the end of the day you are not going to be able to please everyone, and there will ALWAYS be another "expert" out there that believes that they know better. I'll be honest, the first time I encounter this I took it badly and my confidence was in tatters, however now I just smile politely and acknowledge that "you are entitled to your opinion". I have wondered too whether I should reconsider that kind of feedback once the emotion of being slapped with it has subsided. In amongst the "expert rant" there may well be a lesson to take away, but it is something that I've never done. Believe in yourself Chris. You make good pictures, and clearly you have the ability to teach others. Those two things alone will carry you along. All the best fella.

Interesting comments Chris . Critique as you say is vastly different & far more helpful than criticism . If the criticism is from other hobbyist or amateur photographers I'd be inclined to think it's due to them not liking your images or not liking your style & that's fine. I greatly admire Thom Heaton but i don't always like his work . I think Neil Burnell is an awesome pro photographer & I adore probably 90% of his work . It'd be a sad world of we all liked the same things. One man's gold is another's rusty iron so to speak . If the criticism is from other Pro's there's 2 angles ...either a) they're concerned you will be taking business away from them ( partic if in similar location to you) or b) they're trying to be helpful but not going about it the right way . Only you can decide which of those ways to take the criticism & whether to take any notice of it. If you are happy & confident that you're displaying the absolute best images you make then carry on....it's your business . As a hobbyist i don't worry about others thoughts on my images ,if I like them that's all that matters . If however, I were to turn Pro, I can happily say I'd remove from public view probably 95% of my images as only the very very best should be displayed to promote myself & my business. Attempting to make a successful living as a landscape photographer is not at all easy & I admire tat you've gone for it chased your dream 👍 Ps...I'm on a roll with thoughts on this subject 😁 I feel that as a Pro ,if you can post images in your vlogs & self critique them in the vlog ( or as Heaton did ,in a dedicated vlog) that would add a lot to your credibility ...I'm talking about Pro's n general,not specifically you. I can look at my images & pick them apart,admit which are more Record images & those I should never have taken . Hope that makes sense ?
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynne - you make some excellent points here. I find it interesting that you would only show your very best work if you were pro, I guess that is probably the right way to go. As for comments like you aren't good enough to be a pro, honestly mate, I have dealt with these types of people through my other work and unfortunately it's normally just bitterness that some people have, and it's a shame because I appreciate it is very hard to shake off one nasty comment even if you have 100 lovely ones. However, these will be the same people saying the same things in 5 years time because they take 0 risks and don't contribute to this wonderful photography community we have, so in turn don't get anything back either. All the best Scott

I agree that criticism - more so hate rather than constructive critique - can stop you experimenting, but I also think the opposite is true. It's easy to get too comfortable when you're getting consistent positive affirmation and appreciation for your photos. I think constructive criticism is vital to take in consideration - not that you have necessarily agree with it - but equally, our 'victories' should be taken just as apprehensively also. What matters most is how you feel about what you are doing.
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
I think you make an excellent point. I try to take all feedback in the same way, both positive and negative. I am still on the fence about constructive criticism. A lot of other photographers have been suggesting that I get feedback on my work but I still feel that I would prefer to find my own way. I am perhaps overly cautious about allowing myself to be too heavily influenced by others.

I see and hear it a lot. Even critques can be harmful. They can sway your style and vision and start you making images you never intended to make leaving you unhappy with the results and in essence making you a clone of them if that makes sense. I loved the first image you showed too.

You and I are on exactly the same wave length! I try not to take too much feedback because I feel that making my own decisions about what works and what doesn't work is essential to developing my own style. Other photographers have encouraged me to seek critique from others but I prefer to figure things out for myself. What you say makes perfect sense to me, they echo my experiences precisely.

Hi Chris, I've recently discovered your channel and working my way through your videos. Great content and images. It's really good to hear how your 'journey' is going as I myself keep tittering on the edge of 'do I jump to full time freelance or keep the 9-5?' Something I'd like to know is how are you finding the competition in the lake district? Been such a beautiful area is it hard to stand out amongst the crowd of other photographers? Did you have to research your fellow photographers to find a niche or have you not found this to be an issue? One last question did you save for a contingency fund to get you through the early months? Find your channel to be brilliant as there are not many photographers who talk about the realities of becoming a full time freelancer. Most sugar coat it and make it all look very glossy. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing you and your work develop. Have a fantastic Christmas

Hi Simon - thank you very much mate, certainly I am proud of what I have achieved so far, even with the criticism I have received. For my videos I use a Canon M50 with a Røde Video Micro. Chris Sale I’ve just added the same mic to my kit, adding the M50 in the new year, and a better specification of Mac, as I’m finding now my MacBook Air is lagging when I’m trying to view videos, and footage with any kind of processing on it. Filmed a local project on Christmas Eve morning, shot 4 hours of footage, using my Nikon d7000 and iPhone on gimbal, and managed to edit it into an 8 minute video and get it onto my channel by about 10pm on Xmas eve. Have a cracking new year pal, and looking forward to watching more from your channel in 2020.

Chris, really nice shots. Question, did you try taking the last photo (in high winds) without the long exposure. I think the drama of wind action on water and storm clouds should sometimes be embraced. In my humble (and unprofessional) opinion, the smooth water and clouds resulted in empty space, leaving the eye searching for something of interest to latch onto. All in all, excellent work!
@ChrisSalePhoto5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I completely agree with you about long exposures removing some of the drama from an image. I have been experimenting with shutter speeds of around 1/2 a second to retain detail in the sky and water. I expect there will be a video about it in the coming months.

To have the balls to quit a good job and turn a hobby into a new full time job is a statement that blows away any criticism from the start. Chris I follow about 7 photographers on KZbin, and watch hundreds of videos from others, they all get criticism. And it still amazes me that the 7 I follow, you are the guy with the oldest camera with the least MP Sensor from the 7. But prove the point it’s about the talent behind the camera that inspires others like me to love this hobby even more. How can anyone criticise that. Keep the vlogs coming mate, you are going to achieve this journey with ease.👍🏼

Man, I’ve been following Your jurney from the video that You are going full time. I’m really exicited for You and I have some tips for You that may help You. First of all don’t try to take an image every time You go out, sometimes the conditions just aren’t there and the photo will not look at it best. I love Your compositions but on the most of them You are missing some stunning light. I know it is hard, but if You slow down a little with publishing Your images and share only best ones no one will be angry ;) I believe that 1 good photo a month is a amazing outcome. You are rn in amazing posicion to go out every day of the week, try to focus more on the lighting. If there is no amazing light maybe try to use 70-200 and get come close up compositions (that I actually prefer to wide Angles but that may just be me). So maybe You can experiment with this a little bit ;) there are times when wide angle compositions are boring becouse lighting is not perfect. Keep on doing great work and I’m sure You will succed in Your jurney. The people who don't like what you do, and only find fault with it... for one lame reason or another... are usually either envious or jealous of your abilities.
