This is music in a very pure state, stripped of all artifice. Stravinsky surely was one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century.

So many Classical works of music sound nothing like what we would expect them to given their titles. But Stravinsky nails it every time. "Agon" in Greek mythology means, to keep it simple, a sort of conflict (of a spiritual nature, maybe) between two or more characters in a work of music or literature. And that is what this piece of music sounds like. It's wonderful!

Agon is one of these works in which Stravinsky prepared his "conversion" to serialism. The score sounds however most often tonal, but we have a clear feeling that something had drastically changed since the neoclassical period. Rozhdestvensky is playing here on a ground where we did not expect him. This shows his great mastery. The result is perfectly convincing. We have here a great rendering of this crucial score.

Gérard Begni did he ever truly convert to serialism, and if so, what piece would you say is the most purely serial . . ? i hear the rite and the firebird in everything he did, even the late works.

Throck, "Threni" would qualify; it's pure 12-tone.

''Movements for piano and orchestra'' is Stravinsky's work that resembles the most other pieces by composers of serial musical approach, at least in my hearing. Its rythmic freedom makes it more conform to serialism, unlike Threni, which is rythmically more typically stravinskian and square, even tho being apparently dodecaphonic. Both are incredible pieces!

You are right. Nevertheless, I think that this is a possible speed for this score. Rozhdestvensky choosed the tempo carefully, I presume.
