Incredible brilliant playing.... of a titilating, crazy piece (in the best sense of the words). The music is teasing the listener all the time. What does it 'say'? It is a mozaique made-up of spinters of classical music, glued together in another, and often pleasantly wrong way. However, its inner brokenness says something about the last century.

Petrov's voicing is exquisite, though a bit too fast.

I think most people if they were honest with themselves would see this as a novelty piece but with no real interest, they may listen to it a couple of times and marvel mainly at the execution it takes to be able to play but hardly a stirring piece of music for the soul, no doubt I will get bufffoons here trying to disagree but they're wrong , petrol was a marvellous gifted pianist but I think he only played this because he COULD and was paid well for it,I doubt if he wanted to really play it , the Russians in the audience were only marvelling at his technique but most were probably bored rigid and wondering what the hell it was ? Don't get me wrong Stravinsky firebird is an exciting piece but this , especially the 2nd movement like a ghastly Bach air on g strung is like an anomaly interesting but not mainstream

Listen to it a few more times, and leave prejudice and expectations alone, please.

Silvia Manzoni prejudice and expectations ? I too play the piece so am very familiar with it but it's still something I would play regularly only at a concert

Stravinsky had ended up calling his Firebird "a soup". His so-called “neoclassical” works show a very fine evolution towards more purity. I am not a pianist, I nevertheless made this video to show the quality of this work, at the antipodes of the symphonic clutter kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6CpeoSvn9-ti6c (sorry for my english - google translation)

sam333: This is one of the most exciting, energetic, delightful and imaginative pieces ever written. The opening melody, with it's wide leaps, and unexpected intervals, is absolutely riveting. I think you should take a few years to listen to more 20 th century harmony, so you can start to appreciate this glorious music; although I know it's not easy getting familiar with it, as your local radio station and recital halls are, as always, probably unadventurous, close minded, and crammed with 18 and 19 cent. selections... or what I like to call the 3 shhhh's:. Schubert, Chopin, and Schumann
