That was about the only tonal music they allowed in Donaueschingen in 1957. His gestures are marvelous, so full of character. All the gentlemen in the orchestra are "properly" dressed for this rehearsal, while the man from Hollywood is in shirtsleeves.

Maybe it's because later in the piece, it gets pretty atonal. I think this might be the first piece that Stravinsky experimented with the 12 tone technique.

@@johnrandolph6121 Stravinsky began incorporating serial elements in his Septet and Three Shakespeare Songs - it was a gradual process.

Stravinsky was a terrible conductor, but his intentions where full on energy. I’ve met lots of musicians who played in an orchestra directed by him, all saying the same thing: terrible gestures but just by looking at you you knew what he wanted

The European premiere of Stravinsky's Agon conducted by the maestro himself. What a document! Thanks so much for sharing such wonderful archival footage!

Do you by chance have the clip from the original uploader (whatever happened to him and his label?) of Rosbaud conducting the Rolf Liebermann Concerto for Jazz Band and Orchestra? Thank you so much for re-exhuming this clip of Stravinsky!

Lately I heard someone say that composers don't make good conductors. Quite the opposite. This is how its done. Just get down to business and leave the dancing out.
