I appreciate being able to hear Stravinsky conducting his own work. He's a good conductor of Stravinsky.

Many years ago in Winnipeg I was coming into my teacher's house for a Saturday afternoon lesson. As I descended the stairs to the basement I heard the opening lines of Dunbarton Oaks - the duo piano compilation - with my teacher Edward Lincoln on one 7.5 grand and his partner John Melnyk on the other 7.5 . They were glorious - the air was charged with electricity. And this Chamber Orchestra is exquisite - Dumbarton Oaks has the Oaks murmering and humming. Stravinsky was an extreme talent. Thank-you for this submission.

Interesting early take on one of Stravinsky's favorites and mine - probably recorded in mono for a radio broadcast. I have a vinyl stereo album of his conducted favorite works with the Columbia Symphony (1964). The bassoon is much more pronounced in that stereo recording. The speed of this performance reminds me of how Beethoven would speed up the tempo of his pieces to test the skill of the musicians. Nice performance all the same, a tribute to Stravinsky genius.
It seems that the pitch is around 450hz, so the recording is most probably reproducing too fast, which makes the pitch go up and speeds up the tempos. Would love to hear a 442 version of this:-))) Chaotic AND full of life and individual characters, love it:-))))

Opinion against the tide! Stravinsky is generally criticized for too slowly conducting his own music
@danielsimmons79708 жыл бұрын
Stravinsky conducts his music exactly as he conceived it! We are so fortunate to have Stravinsky's recordings of his works, which are the gold standard for the endless insights they contain. Although recordings since 1954 can be more technically advanced, no other INTERPRETATION--however stimulating--can accurately be called superior.

Faster paced and shorter by over a minute than just about any other version I know of by other conductors/orchestras.

+7777Scion Thank you for your comment. Stravinsky is generally criticized as a conductor of his own works. On the other hand, he recorded his complete works. I find difficult to take no account of his interpretive choices.

I should agree... but other points of view than the author's can be no less interesting or even better (the author is not necessary most aware of his own work's potential than another man)

I agree with you, but in this case (and generally) I really appreciate Stravinsky's performance.

There should be little to comment here about Stravinsky's tempi, or even much else. As the composer, he knew how he heard the music in his head. If his performances sometimes lack precision, it is due to the fact he was, first and foremost, a composer, not a conductor. His interpretations, however, remain exactly as he wanted his music to sound.

Great to hear this recording, but too bad I.S. wasn't able to lead a better ensemble, of musicians with today's technical proficiency (esp. the string players, who IMHO are weak here). It's ironic that today's musicians could keep up this fast pace better than these players, yet it is, as others have pointed out, usually taken at slower tempos. (A 2014 recording by the Geneva Camerata, for instance, which pops up here on KZbin, reveals a very different picture of highly skilled musicians. One difference, of course, is that musicians of 2014 have grown up with Stravinsky as an Old Master!)

The double stops on violins did seem a bit off. But why bring nationality in to it? Here in the U S there are some wonderful interpretations of Charter, etc.

What an utterly stupid and uninformed comment. One ought to know something before exposing such pure ignorance.

The constantly changing meter is what makes it so fun to play! Just keep the tick-tick of a stopwatch in your mind while listening and and it falls into place beautifully. It does take getting used to.

Yes, stupid. This is one of Stravinsky's jazziest pieces and composed TO BE THAT WAY.

@@antonycooke6402 You contribute literally nothing, nor do you even deal with his comment. What "knowledge" or "information" are you adding? A pathetic counter to a criticism which actually had at least some substance. Do tell us where this pure ignorance comes from, and don't base it on the flimsy and childish "He's the composer; he knows his own music best!" You are the reason the internet is becoming stupider overall. You word your counter very aptly; yet what did you actually manage to say? All you did was trigger the white-knight mob mentality - that man badmouthed our Lord Stravinsky! Call him stupid; that'll show him! Stravinsky was a creator and dreamer of music. His job was to write the notes. Other conductors are much better at getting an orchestra to do their jobs right. Other pianists were more skilled and more sensitive, occasionally, than Rachmaninoff, even at his own work. The personality and style of a pianist-composer can get in the way of playing their own works; imagine that, but if you inspect the idea it is actually very plausible. This kind of blind worship of "great figures" in music is juvenile and in fact itself ignorant of what constitutes real musicianship. Real musicianship is not earned by fame, or greatness in an *unrelated* field; it is proven through practice and results. Stravinsky being the composer does not make him the best interpreter of his own works. I would think this to be plainly obvious; clearly you were too "utterly stupid" (moronic; simple) to realize something so logically straightforward. And if you are not basing your salty conduct on the premise that Stravinsky is the composer, you can only base it on pure disagreement of opinion. Which makes you the one speaking folly here. Look at you go; you who was so roused by someone criticizing your beloved and *disagreeing* with you! At least he doesn't profess to worship figures like blind children do.

I disagree. This music is at least interesting and I prefer it to much of Mozart. I take issue with those below, whose diatribes I haven't time to read in full, in so far as most of 20th century music shows the emperor with his new clothes. Stravinsky, however, is in a class of his own. Your comment is not 'stupid and uninformed.' If an art form, and especially music, needs explaining it has failed to communicate and is therefore worthless to all but the pseuds.
