Really, truly nice! I just listened to 11 different recordings of Pulcinella, with much frustration-only one other matched the accomplishments here: * the small but certain scale and pulsing conviction, * the dispassionate “dryness” of texture-like 17:45-that Stravinsky perfected, with brass and winds, especially, and which Copland, amongst others, deeply and explicitly admired, * and the sweetly antique, children’s book evocations that so entranced Ravel and Prokofiev as well as Stravinsky. I’m really impressed with this performance. Bassoon expressiveness at 7:42 and 9:26 was wonderful, the flute run at 16:34 perfect, and also the trumpet articulation at 21:33. I loved the winds’ gesture at 14:44. The trombone totally nailed his section, esp at 17:10! I think this ensemble would really have pleased the composer, who, of course, lived and taught in Los Angeles for a while. He’s smiling to know his music is still worthy of angels.
