Extraordinary that only six years lie between this work and The Rite of Spring.

I think this piece displays a lot of talent, but i don't think anyone, based on this piece, could have in any way anticipated what a profound effect Stravinsky would have on music.

Yep, it's kind of like the difference between minuet in G and Gross Fugue

This early Stravinsky symphony shows strong influence by Glazunov . Not a mature or characteristic work of Stravinsky, but still very attractive and worth an occasional hearing .

Great work! In "Chronicles of My Life", he mentions that this work has great influence from Alexander Glazunov. According to Stravinsky, Glazunov's symphonies were fashionable at that time.

What's interesting is hearing the various Russian songs he used (often "cubistically" distorted) in his future works

can you elaborate on that term in context of music, ive seen it mentioned along with bartok as well but idk what that implies
@rfyl

@@ravelian In the case of Stravinsky, at least, loosely speaking it means breaking the theme up into short fragments and then reassembling those fragments in different ways. Not necessarily in ways that sound "weird" in any sense; just different -- differently ordered, or with some fragments repeated or some left out, or with slightly different intervals.

This performance by Pletnev is more skillful and coherent, and has more pizzazz than the old Columbia recording with Stravinsky--or Craft?--conducting.

Yes, it's a real mishmash of styles but the Elgar was the one that really surprises. I wonder if he was really familiar with Elgar, or if it's just coincidental?
@subplantant
@subplantant 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnrandolph6121 I wonder - this is intriguing from Wikipedia about the Enigma Variations - nothing much of Elgar's had found its way out of Britain before this I think: "The work quickly achieved many international performances, from Saint Petersburg, where it delighted Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1904 to New York, where Gustav Mahler conducted it in 1910" - thing is, Stravinsky didn't start studying music full time (with R-K) until 1905. Who knows?
