Everyone likes to meme about the lick since it's so prominent in this piece specifically, but this is probably my favourite ever use of it. Brubeck really brings out the best of the phrase through all the variations, he makes it seem almost touching and symbolic of something much greater. A fantastic example of how to use a recurring motif in jazz. Utter genius.

Great example of how it’s not the lock that’s the problem it’s how you play it.

@@stangetz534 Hard to say.. Most attribute it to Stravinsky, because he is the earliest recordings of it publicly.. But it likely came from Classical origins that rubbed off into the Jazz and bebop playing of the 20's and 30's and became instrumental in bebop jazz language from then on..

You obviously know little about jazz. This is not "licc", this is the MOTIF. And the MOTIF is developed via various MOVEMENTS.

Lick body what? That is the seed of the melody and the theme used for developing, that is present in every good piece of music, from any music ever written, to the Beethoven 5th Symphony, any other symphony, any concerto, to Brubeck's 40 days. Only music ignoramuses use the word "lick", when there was already a better one used centuries before the idiots who use word "lick"were born.

This is both the hardest and easiest song to play on Bass.. lol... OMG i struggle with it so much! Its because they are all playing different rhythms at the same time and its so easy to go off course or lose pace. Its truly incredible. @@lennyappleton2840 Parker did not invent chromaticism. Chromaticism is a Classical idea, as old as the tonal approach to composition. Jazz is the continuation of the Classical tonal approach. One thing Ilike is that if you listen to this on loop, it sounds like the audience starts clapping for them, then once it loops, it goes to the beginning where they finish clapping, then the song starts. So it sounds like they played the song, the audience clap, then they do an encore and play it again for them.

This piece was arranged by Clarence Morris and interpreted by a 9-member ensemble from Tropical Angel Harps Steel Orchestra in 2001 for an album entitled 'Sweet Melodies'. It aptly demonstrates the versatility of the steelpan, the most significant acoustic instrument of the 20th century invented on the island of Trinidad, West Indies.

Thank you for that recommendation which I thoroughly enjoyed. I believe that the creativity of humans is a reflection of our Creator God and certainly music can be divine. On a tangent but following the thread of versatility and odd-metre time signatures, might I recommend The Consouls who turn video games music into jazz gems.
