TF2 Update History: The Classless Update

I never know whether to be positive or negative on this update. On the one hand hats shaped TF2 as it is today and elongated the lifespan of the game by giving Valve an easy financial incentive to keep it up... till now at least. On the other hand hats are a big reason we have the microtransactions filled world we have today.

This would have happened to begin with for sure. Other games were already doing it, and mobile games were already proving it worked

Micro transactions were an evolution from facebook and mobile games. Actually the "trend" of item value and trading has it's roots in games like World Of Warcraft and RuneScape. And even further before that in some of the first MMOs. Sellers all over the world were making behind the scene transactions for things like gold, which were structured very similarly to how sums of in-game currency are valued at. Besides CSGO, I don't think many game have even remotely come close to the way that trading, items, and value are in TF2

I like how the animated avatar doesn’t exist in a white vacuum and take up more than a third of the screen. So much effort put into animating it and providing actual visuals! Y know compared to un animated avatars clicking a PowerPoint slide..

Nicely done video, Liam. It's honestly been so long since I've seen an update "retrospective" video that this video felt new to me. I haven't even seen the secret pages before. I've always seen the "Gentalmans service medal " page and wondered how players got to that page to get it. And, if it casts a ray of shine onto your sad look on the state of arena mode and to remind you of it, one (Graveyard) was officially added into Scream Fortress in 2021 and is now fully cemented as a seasonal game mode. It's the best it's gonna get. Again, excellent work on the video. Can't wait for the next update.

Actually, I'm almost 100% sure that Arena gamemode is still accesible on Valve servers (you just have to find it by sheer luck). Or at least, it was 3 years ago, because i remember randomly finding an Arena match in my early days of TF2. And i didn't know about the custom server browser, so I'm sure it must have been on an official server. I don't know whether that's still the case tho, so yeah. Also, what the hell? I had no idea Offblast was an official map, I always thought it was some sort of an early-days fan creation, or a scrapped map. Well, the more I know

Arena mode should go on alternate game modes lists. Plus Territory Control would need 45 seconds capture time over 10 seconds to make it an actually good game mode instead of a confusing blitz rounder mess. edit. forgot to add, Arena could be improved by taking the idea from Graveyard and making a non Halloween version of the ghosts by way of Dispenser Drones on death. that way, the dead players still help the team, and the surviving players still get support. Maybe the outlines and a neutral boss foes could work?

I’ve played TF2 for nearly seven years. It’s crazy how different my time has been compared to someone who’d been playing since launch. Frequent updates, animated shorts, comics, hidden pages, secret teasers. The game has gotten comparatively very little since I started playing during Gun Mettle. These videos are a fun way to feel nostalgic over something I never even experienced.

just found your series today and im almost caught up- one more to go! i myself wasnt around that long when it came to tf2- i discovered tf2 through the holy grail of comedy, serious action , drama, parodies, we call Garry's Mod and Source Filmmaker in 2016. Wasnt long after that I looked up who the hell valve was and saw their meet the team series. On August 8, 2016, i got steam and on the very next day August 9 (accoording to my Mercenary badge item- level 5 btw), I got Team Fortress 2, one month after the Meet Your Match Update and several months before update we dont mention. Almost six years of TF2, and I still play the hell out of it on a daily basis, and I still watch tf2 videos. Keep up the amazing content dude!! (BTW, i cant wait til you get to the engineer update. Almost no one ever recalls how significantly important this was for engie mains since originally at the October 2007 launch of TF2 back when you still had to buy it on its own or in the orange box for ps3 and xbox 360, you couldnt move a single buiilding at all.)

this was the last update that I missed before I got the game, only a month and a half before my mom bought a copy when I was in school. I can't imagine my life if my mom didn't find that copy of the orange box... tf2 was a huge part of my after school life.

The last time i remember playing on Yukon was when the bot problem was at it's peak, i was literally the only player in the server because the bots couldn't leave without being kicked, making it sort of like a bot solitary confinement.

Only way i ever ended up on the offblast map is through playing prophunt server which had no rtv and randomly selected the next map when the internal timer ran out (or when admin was present and did it manually).

There a mod called open fortress which has no classes at all except one like the terrorist in csgo. I think it will be cool if we ad it to the classes list, open new alternatives story, more tf2 comics will be written.

Only one new Arena mode map has been added, and it is only available during October and Halloween. It was added in 2021, and unfortunately, my brain has forgotten what the name of that map is.
