Tbh something I've realized is that the reason people are annoyed by weapons by the kunai isn't because they're good against bad players, it's that they're weapons that punish you for having bad players, which is just annoying because its something out of your control, and most casual games tend to have a wide range of skills rather than just a bunch of sweats or a bunch of people who don't know what is the button to shoot gun.

thank you for giving the red tape recorder some recognition, i feel like a lot of people just underestimate it due to it being slow, and completely ignore how good it is against engie nests. if you combine it with the cloak and dagger and wait for the right moment you can really help your team with a push into the enemy intel room, since even if they kill you and unsap the buildings, now their sentry doesn't have any rockets on it

Dead Ringer has some slight nuance you're missing though. If you activate it while you're disguised as a team mate, it won't immediately alert the enemy that you are in fact a Spy, which can throw people for a loop temporarily. It also has the somewhat understated advantage of making the enemy doubly paranoid of your presence once they're aware of your shenanigans, which takes their attention off your team sometimes. The Red Tape Recorder, as trashy as it is, has one more unstated advantage. If you manage to downgrade the level of the Dispenser, it'll completely drain its metal reserves, which makes upgrading the rest of the buildings painstakingly slow for the Engy, assuming they're not camped next to a medium or big ammo pack.

The Red Tape Recorder has a few other quirks that no one knows about because no one ever uses it. It also blocks the Eureka Effect from teleporting to exits if its on a level 1 tele, and because the construction animation has to play, it gives sentry guns a longer cooldown when its removed.

15:00 One thing worth mentioning about the Red Tape, is that the thing specifically making it good against large Engineer nests is that the buildings being spread out a lot means the Engineer has to move himself over to the buildings himself. The Rescue Ranger's bolts won't work on it, so he has to get rid of the sapper. Will need to test if the haul works, but even if it does it still stops the building from functioning for a bit, according to the wiki, the Rescue Ranger has some bugged behavior with sapped buildings. This allows you to bait around where the Engineer is moving, or otherwise buy more time where that specific building is disabled.

Fun fact: spy is always gaining diamondback crits regardless of loadout, and you can equip it and use the crits any time before you die. It's the perfect way to counter the surge of spy paranoia after a hot streak. It's a disgusting feeling to return from spawn with 12 crits, but when you vaporize that razorback sniper from across the map, you will understand.

I love that explained tier list , and will use it to teach friend. Stocks are all reliable, while unlock are situational. The only thing i think you missed is the true important bonus of the Enforcer (that i know you know because i saw clip of you using that bonus) : That +20% damage bonus while disguised is just enough damage on your first bullet to 2 shot a 125hp class , making it a lot easier and faster to kill a razorback sniper or engineer after sapping his sentry. It doesn't change it's tier , but it's good to know , and way more usefull than the resistance bypass bonus.

My impression is that that many people who don’t like the YER are just people who don’t play spy that much. I think that’s partly because it’s very punishing for less experienced spy players, but also largely because it’s one of the spy unlocks that feels the most unique to play, so people who play spy a lot enjoy the change of pace.

the kunai dr spy is in as much as a subclass as gunspy is, and evaluating it based on whether they're effective in a traditional playstyle would be like judging whether gunslinger engi is as effective defensively as stock engineer. it's clear that you have a very specific disposition and preferred way of playing spy -- that's fine; however, just because the playstyle doesnt suit the way you like playing the class, it doesnt mean the kunai and dr are ineffective or are deserving of that low of a rank, especially when there's an enormous amount of evidence of the contrary.

I joined TF2 last year, and I always thought the Enforcer could have more of a "support" work as a Spy gun. This would be my rework: *The Enforcer* *On hit: One target is Marked-For-Death for 12 seconds, causing damage taken to become mini-crits. Marked targets' healing is reduced by 15%. Marked targets' speed is reduced by 10%.* *-40% damage penalty* *-20% Clip size* *-10% Less accurate.* This would make "The Enforcer" to live up to its name, it would still "enforce" pain upon his enemies, but not necessarily by its own hand. With 5 bullets instead of 6, the damage penalty and the mini-crit first shot effect, would make it so a full clip at medium range (assuming you can hit that with the accuracy penalty) does 152 (24 + {Mini-Crit shots} 32 + 32 + 32 + 32), barely enough to kill a Medic. In case you can't get a backstab on an enemy, you can do a kind of hit and run playstyle, leaving up your team to clean up, and the accuracy penalty would make it so you can't just snipe people with a Mini-Crit effect that can't be removed by Medics in half the time, from across the map.

Its about time someone said the kunai isnt broken As someone who pretty much exclusively plays community servers such as uncletopia, it has a massive downside for only a small upside, not to mention the risk of dying even while invis is way too high I agree with the things you mention in this video, however as an engineer main AND spy main, the redtape really isnt that good against minis, its always level 1 and the whole "takes longer for the engi to replace it" is really not a thing. As a gunslinger engi you want to play near your mini as much as possible (or use the wrangler) so its common the engi breaks the sapper anyways. It is however really good against level 3 engi nests that have the engineer STILL ALIVE. Stock sapper is good against dead engineers or teleporters, but red tape is good for spamming large nests to waste as much metal as possible

There's a reason a ton of spy players that only use DR kunai requeue or just leave if the people they're playing against have more than 2 neurons firing. Its a trash combo and I will always look down upon spies that only use that combo. I'll always complement a good stab. But GOD is it annoying to fight a DR spy that will never commit to a fight among spies. Like, sir I'm using YER and amby, I can only land headshots if I wiff the stab. Those are also the spies that complain if you butterknife them. Sorry? You can only live two failstabs 😂 im not going to take a break and let you grab a health kit just to repeat it again

As someone who just cannot play Spy. I find all stock to be the most useful for me, although I swap the stock watch with Dead Ringer. So for example, I don't want to use the Kunai since I don't want to be even more fragile than I already am as Spy. And I don't want to slow myself to get headshots with the Amby. Full Gun Spy is something I like doing as Spy and I'm not ashamed of it, even if I don't do well as Spy in general.

Based on your argument for the dr and kunai being bottom tiers, you could also make the argument that the stock rocket launcher is also in the "crippling weakness" tier if you're only using splash damage from very long range against a single enemy. Of course if you restrict the situations to where the weapons are weakest, they will have crippling weaknesses but given how powerful chainstabs can be, how most people play in 12v12 player servers, how often players will be grouped up together and distracted (usually at key choke points or objectives), and how often you will get players who don't seem to learn how to fight spies, the weaknesses of the two weapons, ESPECIALLY together, become super hard to notice.

I think the Kunai is a misunderstood knife. Personally, it is my 2nd most used knife, and I use it cause I am confident in my ability to get a stab. I think it should be viewed as a mire defensive Big Eearner, as the 210 hp makes it way easier to escape after a stab, especially against better players. My Kunai loadout is it plus the L'etranger and Cloak and Dagger. I use the Kunai here in two ways, one for escaping better, and the other for being aggressive. As I said earlier, instead of a speed boost from the Big Earner, using the extra hp to get out is more effective for me, especially with the Cloak and Dagger. Also, if you escape while taking almost no damage, you can go back in before they expect you again ver aggressively, using the extra hp to get a less isolated targets. With the extra hp you can very easily get to an important pick, and now maybe even escape using the extra hp you just got. This back and forth playstyle can easily catch people off guard, and with the extra hp you can push to the import pick. Of course you can always try to trickstab with it, but using trickstabs should almost always be a last resort, like with most knives. Now of course this is not close to stock in consistency, but this very back and forth playstyle is very hard for enemies to lock down to to its randomness. This randomness is so hard to understand because it is based on what the enemy does to you, not what you want to do. Mixing this up a little is always important to keep the enemy expecting something else. I think the Kunai gets a lot if hate for being the knife that is very good at pubstomping, and due to that almost no one looks at its uses other than trickstabing. Anyway with that said, remember that the Kunai is so bad in comp it is not even funny.

I usually use YER, amby, stock, and snack attack. Been using it for around 3 almost 4k hours. Broke 100k kills on my YER around November of last year. I named it You 2.0. Its so sad people think the cloak penalty is the deal breaker on using it. IMO It's the cloak cost to disguise. You stab a heavy as your last stab in a chain? Too bad bucko gotta cough up the cloak to change it. I think YER shouldn't cost cloak to disguise as an ally. Make it so disguising as an ally is a viable method with the weapon. But that's just an idea I have had since I hit 2k hours with it.

The Enforcer is basically just stock but slightly different. Same as the Tomislav A single slightly more powerfull shot on a 3 second cooldown, and the ability to fuck over wranglers... For a slight fire rate penalty, that basically doesn't since you'll be spacing out your shots anyway due to how the accuracy works. So basically just stock but slightly different.
