Finding a minor flaw in a knife then using that as a reason to sell it so new knives can be bought that may or may not have minor flaws then later having minor but not major regret about the sale is living the Knife Bro lifestyle. Speaking from experience.

I got the full size through the custom program… red scales and some other little details that make it “mine.” I like partially serrated blades…. I actually do need to cut some cord or rope occasionally. I called Benchmade twice, trying customer service initially and then later getting through to a product manager…. No matter how much I begged they would not add partial serrations to it “because the Crooked River doesn’t come that way.” So somehow I found a cutlery shop in California (I’m on the east coast) who would grind the serrations for me. So after receiving my custom Crooked River I sent it to Cali. And now I have what I assume is a one-of-a-kind Crooked Riber and I love it. I also have a Grip and a Mini Grip and I love them too. I travel to a foreign country where the Mini Grip is a better size for the circumstances…. I consider it my city knife. I also have 3 Microtechs OTF’s plus an MTX-2 (auto side-folder) and of course they are a lot of fun to carry too.

I have a dozen Benchmade knives and love them, but at their current pricing I'd probably have a lot less of them. I use the Griptilian and Bugout the most of the bunch. I consider the Griptilion with its plastic handle made for function over use and hole opener as an honorary Spyderco knife.

Benchmade helped me buy a knife once. I made the mistake of having my wife with me at the knife store and I was going to buy a Buck Mini Spitfire. She looked at the price and said "$30, that seems like a lot for a pocket knife". I knew pointing out the $200 I had spent on that one pair of fancy boots last year. You know, the ones she had only worn twice. That was not going to sway her to my side, and was probably going to start a big fight. So, I just pointed to the $320 Benchmade knife a little further over in the display case. Suddenly she didn't mind me spending $30 on a pocket knife.

Black Friday deal for the Grip led me to this channel probably 3-4 years ago. I got one in S30V with the same orange handle 👍 it was probably about $90, I think regular price was north of 120 at the time. I also found a mini grip. The 20cv model with grey and blue G10 scales and blue spacers, like it as well. Most valuable thing I've ever found, followed by $20 bill here and there. Not a big collector, maybe have 6 knives between those, a Leatherman, couple Moras, and a Case. One Spyderco and I'd feel fully set.

I have no desire to buy anything from Benchmade, but I love your cutting humor, so I’ll listen to most nearly anything you make. 😄 Also, I think it’s fair to say that Benchmade isn’t inflating their prices but are committing price gouging, tho I’m fairly quick to call the dramatic increases in price we’ve seen for half a decade now price gouging. 🙃

It was a good, honest run-down on a range of their blades. I've only owned an Ozbourne (abt $300can, now?) and I'm pretty attached to it. Sturdy with crisp action and the S30V steel holds a sharp edge. Got one sent to my Dad and he refuses to use it, because they left the price on the box and he figures he'll just lose it. They're pricey.

I like how you present your knives. Like a real dude who collects knives. I want to talk about the chisel grind. You need to use a stone or other flat sharpener. Only sharpen the bevel edge. Go till you feel a burr(20 -17 degrees is best). Strop the flat edge(slightly angled like 3 -5 degrees) to meet the bevel and smooth out the burr. Strop bevel at the same angle you used on the stone( this will smooth out any nicks or inconsistencies in your edge). I agree that is a shit otf by the way and chisel grinds are stupid unless its a Japanese chef knife

Around 2020 $140 for a benchmade 202 leuku and $190 for a super-freek were pretty reasonable for the quality of knife, since then I’ve only bought them from REI’s closeout sales that are like 30% below MAP or more.

It’s an ancient design, but the (sadly discontinued) BM710 is still among my most carried knives and still remains one of my favourites - since I bought it way back in like 2002. The 530 Pardue remains a favorite as well. I also have a 1st Gen Nimravus I carried on deployment. Honestly though these days except for the Osborne and Claymore OTF Benchmade hasn’t impressed me much in recent years (sorry Griptilian fans but I don’t like the design at all and think it and the minigrip are the most overhyped mediocre folders out there). Benchmade prices have become ridiculous too. In terms of collecting I mostly moved to vintage stuff, and Italian stilettos (switchblades) both traditional and tactical. Think Lelle Floris, Frank Beltrame, AGA Campolin, Latama, Piscitti, etc… But it’s not just my changing taste, Benchmade’s been mostly uninspired and overpriced for some years now IMO. Great blades are now more the exception than the rule. No doubt I’ll get heat for that, but I’ve been into knives since the 1980s and just calling it how I see it.

@J.DeLaPoer
@J.DeLaPoer 7 ай бұрын
Thanks!! I was not aware, but will check it out asap. I collect knives but not Benchmade in particular, so I don’t really keep up with their releases or anything. IMO the 710 was such an excellent all purpose “tac/tility” design I never understood why it got discontinued. I agree on the sticker shock. BM were never cheap -- I always felt fairly priced for their quality though -- but these days they’ve adopted the HK ethos of -"fuck you"- I mean "prestige pricing", as their marketing strategy. I think I paid $150 for my first 710 c2002, and $175 for a 2nd coated blade version around '09. Can’t wait to see what this Seven Ten costs… EDIT: Ok, less than I expected. The Limited ones are overpriced to the point of being a blatant ripoff though. Also what the hell is with BM's obsession with turquoise these days? The machining pattern is ok I guess, but I'll take the classic black textured G10 scales over _turquoise aluminum_ any day. G10 is inert and virtually indestructible; I dislike aluminum on working knives since they tend to have slippery anodizing and get dented/scuffed/scratched/gouged extremely easily. *At that price it should seriously be titanium ffs*

I love my Benchmade Emissary and 3” Mini Barrage. Of course they discontinued the Emissary…

Been watching your videos on and off for years now. I'm also in late-stage knife collecting and my collection has gotten smaller, not larger. I think I have a Benchmade 940 left but I sold all the other ones. Mostly overprices, basic pocket knives. Soulless, as you said. You and I are too advanced for that shit.

Personally it's not because I think it'll break that I don't like flex in the handle, it's the loss of stability in the hand. If I'm cutting something difficult, I squeeze the handle. I don't want to feel the handle twist or bow when I'm leaning in.

Bugout is overrated. Go back in time and buy a 940 in 2015 instead. The one with the purple.

I think they're discontinuing the Griptillian, had to pick one up for $100 and justify spending $40 for a nice aluminum scales to make it collection worthy 😂. Also have a 20cv Bugout, probably the one knife I'd keep if I had to get rid of all but one of the 30+ knives I own. BUT their MSRP are straight dumb .. never pay that

The bugout is my daily driver. Love it, light, deep sitting, plenty durable and strong. For people that just need to cut stuff and don't desire an Ed Hardy meets Steam Punk bastard child.

same. thin blade works for me. the only benchmade i've kept. had a REI coupon that came in hot 5-6(?) years ago. don't know if could justify the current price. i agree it's soulless out the box but i swapped out for rockscale design scales and the patina/wear has added the charm that was missing.

Always enjoyed your content AKB…..knife collecting is stalling out for a lot of folks. The economy just doesn’t warrant it anymore. “Stay Classy, AKB”!!

Word. I live in ATL and work within walking distance of the Blade Show venue. I'm not going this year. I've been the last four shows but this time just seems....like Already have enough knives. $30 to get into the biggest knife store on the planet ain't bad. But I'll just wind up spending another $300 - $400 cuz I feel like I should as a knife guy. Maybe I'll go tomorrow.

I feel I may not be advanced enough because I don't have that many Benchmades. Also I have not batoned with Benchmade yet. Can a knife bro who is advanced give some advice/encouragement?

Cant hate on anyone hating the bugout. But i cannot hate on the bugout either. Just hating on benchmade for the price. My favorite knife? Bugout..
