This is pretty accurate, I don't know what the comments are talking about. I've been a psych tech for 2 years as a side job for college, and it's a phenomenal job. However, it's not for everyone. you need to be able to work 12 hour shifts, and you have to be able to handle incredibly emotional situations while remaining rational. You do a lot of group activities with the patients, and you check their vital signs as well as check up on them in intervals. You have to be sensitive, but you can't be TOO sensitive; it sounds cruel, but you have to be able to laugh about things you see in the facility, or else you'll become one of the patients yourself. And if you're in a place that has a lot of people with substance abuse problems, prepare to be manipulated.

@@zuezsz they will literally hire anyone, you just need to apply. mental health techs/psychiatric techs are always short staffed due to how incredibly hard the job is... but this is a great experience if you have psych degree and wanna have a good paying job. I am planning on becoming a case manager when I completed my degree and once I have been employed for 2 years at my facility, but I am telling you ITS A HARD JOB.

I'm a former psych tech. I enjoyed the majority of my job and if it paid a living wage, I'd probably still be that field. I want to point out that the nurse is walking around her unit with a stethoscope around her neck. Does no body see a safety issue with this? It's just a thought; maybe modify the video so that potential employees do not think it's common place for staff to walk around with things - stethoscopes, jewelry, ect - around their necks on a psychiatric unit. Also, the pens in the person's breast pocket are a weapon as well. At least keep them out of sight of the patients.

Maximum Security Forensic Tech, Female Unit, Illinois State. 98% of the public only THINK they know what "crazy" looks like. Imagine killing your kid, dad, wife or all three and not realizing it (or accepting it really happened because, well, you're crazy) until 3 or 4 MONTHS later when you get on the right medication. By this time you're in a 8x10 room with a plastic bed, no clothes except a suicide smock, and fingernails cut to the quick. Imagine wanting desperately to die and having a team of people who are tasked with making sure you don't. For some people I'm positive I work on the first floor of heaven... Helping them move on from unimaginable horror into some semblance of a life. For others I'm a caretaker in hell. I still love my job...

No degree or training required (I still can't believe it. There absolutely should be.), you just have to be able to withstand a lot of verbal abuse from very disturbed people.

@@katymcnamara9898 The best qualification you could possibly have for this job is living through an addiction or extreme abuse and still keeping your shit together, or even better, putting your shit BACK together after the world blows it apart. I was an alcoholic for 7 years and nearly lost everything including my life. I had dui's, wrecks, tickets, etc... Bad scene. ...but a certain woman wouldn't stop loving me and I couldn't let her down. 4 years sober May 30th 2022. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "Hurt people, hurt people"? Well "healing people, heal people" is equally true. These people are going through the absolute bottom of bottoms and if you don't at least have a tiny appreciation for what that feels like you'll be no help to them.

@@katymcnamara9898 What state are you planning to work in? The two best paying states for this profession are Illinois and Florida. Sadly, most states don't prioritize mental health (yet) and pay MHT's & STA's about what beginner EMTs make. This is an ABSOLUTE TRAGEDY because most of the quality people never even consider a career in mental health unless it's as some sort of Dr or Nurse. MHT = Mental Healthcare Technician MHT's in Illinois are "Non-forensic", meaning that they can only care for "civil" patients. (A civil patient is someone who is remanded to custody of the facility but hasn't committed any crimes requiring incarnation. They could be there for many many different reasons but ultimately they're there because they keep having minor run-ins with the law (loitering, disturbing the peace, shoplifting, etc) or they've gotten violent with their primary caregiver (shouts, threats, no actual hitting yet) and are becoming more and more hostile. STA means "Security Therapy Aide" and we take care of the "Uber crazy". STA's are responsible for the people who can't be put in jail because they're just too bizarre. We treat the people who do the thing they make tv shows about. Women who kill their children because God told them to. Children who've killed their parents because they "had evil spirits inside". But mostly we have abused people who have become abusers. There's a lot less "Evil" than I thought there would be, but a whole lot more sadness. I've also found it's possible to have compassion for people who have done the unthinkable to children... My biggest fear when I started was wondering how I would treat patients who I knew had committed crimes against kids. How would I respond to the request of a known child rapist when they asked to be let in the shower? Would I snap? I forced myself to read every word of every chart and try to learn about the past of each patient and how they came to be here. What did I learn? Every single patient that was here for abusing a child was once themselves abused as a child. Every Single One. 😑

@@muserchannel7551 for the state of Nevada they gave up on State Mental Health Certification . this was in Reno maybe different in Las Vegas. They had yearly required classes for progression as a Mental Health Tech I, II, and III. The classes did not help with the realities of the job but their intentions were good. This is a total dog and pony show. Not realistic at all. Been in the game for over 20+yrs and I've got more common sense than the nurse or doctor. Therapy used is outdated and the meds are even worse. People need talk therapy not dope and restraints. The love juice they put in your body is terrible. I could right a book and make a movie based on what I've seen in the mental health field.

sandman15697 I agree that many docs and RN’s I have worked with should not be in the field but otherwise your comments are dangerous! Medications in the type of environment I work in (I am a Licensed PT in the state of California working at a locked, state hospital with PC 2972 patients) are absolutely necessary in conjunction with other forms of treatment and it’s irresponsible for you to say otherwise. I was assaulted brutally 3 years ago by a patient who was highly psychotic and grossly under-medicated! I would say the fact that he beat me brutally and wasn’t going to stop hurting me or himself unless they placed him in restraints was necessary. When a patient beats his head into a wall and refuses to stop hurting himself I would say restraints are necessary. I would say the patient whose doctor lowered their meds so low that the patients med levels were no longer therapeutic and then this patient sexually assaulted and tried to choke to death one of my female coworkers was just as irresponsible as your comments here! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ashley Chandler Ashley Chandler medications are a necessary part of the treatment plan for most psych patients, especially the very violent ones that will hurt you in an instant especially when they’re under medicated, patients do not become “immune” they build what’s called a tolerance, and I’m sorry for your Uncle but unfortunately one of the possible side effects of antidepressants is suicidal ideation..... and FYI there is no cure for mental illness only treatment and as many patients age their symptoms lesson and we don’t lock our patients in rooms they have rights while being held. You should educated yourself further on this entire subject and actually talk with people like myself who work mental health. 🤦🏼‍♀️

The great thing about this is that you can emphatise with the patients. You can easily put your feet in their shoes and they may feel at ease when they know that you experience the same feelings that they go through. You may make them feel not alone.

Randolph Agarn, I now this is late but if you're still there I'd like to ask you a question... I currently live in Coalinga and wanted to apply but I have no training or studies on this subject. A psytech nearby told me to apply with my current status, that they would train me and enroll me in a program to get certified. Is that true or what do you suggest I do? Ed. l am so sorry l didnt see this post till now. go to the hospital to get your foot in the door, then get out and go to CDCR, Pleasent Valley if you can i was there for 5 months. lf you are not a psych tech yet i dont know how to go about doing the 20/ 20 program, i didnt do that. i was a psych tech long before i went to the state. l went to psych tech school a million years ago. l worked private first. i loved PVSP but i got a SPT spot at CEN and moved for the promotion. i was not sad to leave Coalinga the town. When i was there i lived in the apts behind k mart. l retired from CDCR last year and no longer have my license. l didnt renew it. i had been doing this work since 84, i am so over it. lf you respond i'll try to get back to you sooner this time

Where did the idea of putting random people with strange various unknown diseases of the brain altogether come from and why did they think it would be healing or therapeutic to anyone involved? It’s basically just get patients on large doses (probably too large) of sedatives and call it healing.

That has to be one of the worst jobs on the planet!!! Being around that energy day in and day out has to take it's toll on an individual's overall well being. The question is What type of consciousness would draw an experience where you would have a job as this. From a higher prospective Both are in need of tremendous healing. The employees are not aware of it Though. Life is a reflection of the inner.

The BLU Phoenix Sky I currently work with Adolescents on this level. I have always been completely enveloped in helping people throughout my life. I feel that one does this job, first to assist others in leading happy lives, and second as a source of experience prior to moving on to the work they would really love to do. Most people do not want to work as Direct Care staff forever. It pays like crap, and it is INTENSE, especially when working with an acute behavioral population. I strongly agree that nobody enters this field without their share of trauma, whether firsthand or secondary (a family member or friend, or maybe even classmate). But I will also say that not all of us are as you are describing us to be. Arguably, you must absolutely embrace everything you are and can be in order to work in Psych. If you aren't able to take feedback and understand harsh truths about you, then there is no business in you being there. You can not support anyone if you are lacking self-awareness. Although a good program does require employees to participate in therapy and incident debriefing to minimize the risk of additional secondary traumas. If you ever have a chance to volunteer with a non-profit that provides these services, know that the experience is highly recommended.
