The U.S. Military has a major core issue with recruiting... the potential recruits hear from Veterans from Iraq (first go around), Iraq (second go around) and then Afghanistan (for over 20 years, the Soviets couldn't quell them, why did we think we could?) and see how they are being treated, cared and relied upon - and they aren't fooled. I told my step-sons that I would fund their college before enlisting in the military like I did. I refuse to have their government treat them like they have treated a lot of my brothers in arms over the decades. While I have been fortunate, there are THOUSANDS of Vets who have been marginalized, ignored, pandered to, lied to and gaslit over the years that have not been as fortunate.

I think you're bang on the money with talking about people voting for their own interests over collectivism. England has a similar problem. There was a programme made by BBC Scotland back in 2010 called "Why didn't the Scots vote Tory (conservative)". It started off as just an examination of the historical and cultural differences between the two nations and as to why Scotland has always been more of a collectivist society, long story short it's been baked into our culture for as far as back as anyone can find. What was interesting that they did surveys and interviews with similar socio-econmic groups in both Scotland and England. Scots were happy to pay more in tax if it helped those less fortunate than themselves and voted for making society better as a whole. Meanwhile in England the same group were voting for anyone that promised to help them personally more, to cut their taxes, to benefit them directly as individuals and to hell with everyone else. This leaves them open to very obvious grifters (see brexit for details). Unsuprisingly the BBC has since burried that documentary as the picture that emerged show the disparity in morality and was an unintentional boost to the Scottish indepdence movement.

All of our vets every single one of them should be covered anywhere for anything I mean everything from heart pills to abortions, ivf treatment, transitioning, anything eyes, dental all of it! I am so freaking sick of our government not careing for our vets! My grandpa has been dead almost a year now & VA was so incredibly lackluster not to mention we live in a small florida town so he would have to drive hours to get to any of the 2 that were in the kinda area & that is horse shit especially when your a prostate cancer patient on radiation where you must go there for hours several times a week on top of the waiting to get in while there or waiting for appointments or the long waits to get treatments approved then if they are in pain like he was then or like he was before the cancer they don’t want to do pain management type medicine just low dose light crap that left my grandpa feeling terrible pain all the time but he could not get covered nor could he afford the dr himself. When he needed false teeth he had to pay all the costs for everything! This never ever should be! Look at all the money we give isreal when we should never be they have tons of money & oil was just found & is being extracted now or very soon, all of them have free healthcare for everything even Abortion! Like wtf however aipac is literally buying & controlling all of our politicians & we are slipping into theocracy! It is all terrifying & don’t attack me I myself am Ashkenazi & have always been the biggest defender of Jewish people as my own great great & 3rd great grandparents & their close family fled here from Germany starting in 1919. Though being of Jewish ancestry should never ever mean that you can be for or against them i’m just bringing it up because it is a sore spot rn & anyone with an opinion is anti-Semitic and that is just not correct for many people sounding the alarm bells.

I continue to look on horror in what is happening in the country of my birth and, I’ve said too many times yet bears more repetition: I’m so glad I left when I did in 2004, because I can only imagine, as a mixed-race, bisexual, agnostic woman what would happen to me had I remained in the states. I’ve only been back a few times, and that was to attend a couple of funerals and a wedding, but I’m keeping myself on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean for the foreseeable future. I fear for all of my friends who can’t escape because they’re too poor to leave, even though they desperately want to get out. Keep up the fight.

Don’t forget the great myth that America was built by rugged individuals who came to this magnificent wide open land and while grasping their bootstraps built it into the great country it is. I think that plays more into the individualism psyche than religion. It ignores that many who first came here were already wealthy and educated, the need to enslave and import Africans and to have poor laborers immigrate from various countries to further enrich many already well off, to open lands by relocating indigenous peoples to allow those rugged individuals to claim that land, etc. Many Americans want to believe the their hard work alone will make them rich and successful myth, so they want someone to blame when it doesn’t happen. To maintain the myth they let the rich and powerful point them to nonwhite and/or non-native born groups as the ones ruining the American Dream, so they won’t realize who really benefits the most.

I grew up in New Zealand. Although there was none of that ouvert patriotism, there is pride in our country. The hand on heart stuff just looks ridiculously superficial. As for so-called freedom, that's laughable. More than half of our population has no religion. Very few ever attend church. I'm 77 years old and was raised without religion. It wasn't an issue.
