Nobokov hid everything in plain sight. The child isn't perceiving signs and signals where there are none; his perception is accurate. Reread the story...it becomes clear. Nabokov is explaining the existence of meaningful coded messages across all media; understand the context of the story is the key to understanding what the codes are used for, and by whom. Nabokov encoded the meaning / context of the story, with some of the same codes that literally surround you, and always have. I'll give you a few clues: The mother explains to the caller precisely how & why she's dialling the wrong number: using the letter 'o' instead of the number '0.' The number 0 and letter 'o' aren't the point here; the message is simple: *Incorrect code/cipher detected:* _letter code_ *Resend using correct / required code:* _number code._ Letters can be interpreted as numbers, and numbers can be interpreted as letters e.g. the rudimentary A=1, B=2, C=3 number / letter substitution code. Take for example the upper-case letter G that often appears in the square & compass logo of Freemasonry; the grand poobahs & esteemed scholars of the funny handshake brigade all parrot the claim that while several theories exist as to what the G stands for, there's no consensus, since no authoritative etymological source exists to explain its origin, blah blah blah. Possible meanings include: god, geometry, the generative principle, and gnosticism. Sure thing, pal. The above is pure misdirection, not just to hide the real meaning of the mysterious upper-case letter G, but also (maybe even soley, gasp!) to hide the fact that the single-pant-leg-rolled-up double-headed Phoenix worshipping Kabbalah victims in question use simple number-letter substitution codes _rather a lot._ So the above knowledge (plus a bit more I'm throwing in free of charge, for a limited time only) allows us to (pretend to) do the math and conclude that: G stands for the number 7 (number code vs word code ;) 7 derives from 3 + 4 The square represents the number 4 because, well...it's a square. The compass represents the number 3, because it's outline forms a triangle in the square & compass logo. (No, really...it does). It's certainly the case that pretty much all the secret societies, University fraternities, fraternal orders and so on (in the US in particular) are mad about the number 7. Trust me, it's a thing (look it up ;). *MORE CODES, KEYWORDS, SIGNS & SYMBOLS* • Trains, esp. trains entering & exiting tunnels, have been used as a sexual metaphor in tv, film, art, and literature, for a strenuously long time. (Again, look it up ;) • Death is a metaphor for loss of male sexual arousal (esp. post-coital); resurrection / rebirth is a metaphor for (re)egneration of male sexual arousal. • Tears are a crude codeword for male sexual fluid / discharge (AKA semen) and may, in darker / more disturbing contexts, refer to the damage (tears) done by rape / sodomy. • Rain = reign. Remember the song Purple Rain? Who sang that again...? That's right: Prince. Purple Rain/Reign, by... _Prince._ Starting to get it, now? Nice ;) (FYI band / song / album names, song lyrics and so on are utterly riddled with this coded crap, to a perverse level. That's kinda what Nabokov's trying to say, not just in Signs & Symbols, but Lolita as well. More than that I can't say, since I only took an interest in the sifty geezer an hour or so ago, but I'm willing to be he riffs on this incessantly (no pun intended; _no, really!)._ Given the above, does the third phone call indicate the fact that the mother is wrong i.e. the caller _wasn't_ using the wrong code, thus wasn't dialing the wrong number all along? Has the husband / father been molesting their son all along? Did the mother know, but felt / was powerless to intervene? I think so; the _"secret"_ was hidden in plain sight. I guess it wouldn't have been huge stretch, in retrospect, if only to rule it out, to see whether attributing the underlying theme in Lolita (which, contrary to Nabokov's claim, certainly *_is_* primarily about child abuse, neglect, trafficking, and related evils, inc. the unrecognized scale & invisible nature thereof, and the codewords, ciphers, signs and symbols used by the perpetrators of same, whether or not love is a theme _as well.)_ I seem to recall Kubrick banging on about exactly the same thing in Eyes Wide Shut. *_EXTRA CREDIT_* Investigate, research, and explain the following codes, which you should be able to discern now you've got the tools. Cite as many examples for each code as you can find. NB: all but one of the below codes are based on the A=1, B=2, C=3 cipher. I've got a spreadsheet full of data I've collected on the below. *CC33 code* (climate change, common core, crop circles, counterculture, Chris Cornell, Christchurch...) *MM33 code* (Marshall _"the medium is the message"_ McLuhan; Marshal Mathers AKA Eminem; Marilyn Manson; Micky / Minnie Mouse) *GG77 code* (Germaine Greer; Georgia Guidestones; Gary / Gail Gygax* *AC13 AKA AntiChrist13 Code* PS: Nabokov becomes much easier to figure out all of a sudden, I mean look: *(1) Vladimir Nabokov discusses "Lolita" part 1 of 2* kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpXTm5Jrf7N5paM Literally his first words, right off the bat, are: _"users of colors and cozies."_ Get it? Colors & cozies = CC = CC33 code, immediately. Wink wink / nudge nudge? That Nabokov, what a slavic James Joyce he is, eh? Whatever you say, Professor Chomsky; took me all of half an hour to out the prick. Tricky stuff! *(2) Vladimir Nabokov discusses "Lolita" part 2 of 2* kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zl7alHVqh7WUqac 00:37 _"...and whom Humbert mentions as early as page 33."_ BINGO! YAHTZEE! LOTTO POWER-BALL WINNING NUMBER 33! YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP! GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL, DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200 It's all so friggin' hard, isn't in, sheepeople of planet Earth? * Last known residence: 330 Centre Street, hahahaha. D&D (44). Monster Manual (MM33). Cyborg Commando (CC33). Gord the Rogue novels (gnosticism 101). Roll 3D6 to generate character attributes: 666 reference? Nah! Tabletop Fantasy Roleplaying Games? Get real! Except (1) Fantasy author Marion Zimmer Bradley's daughter wrote a shocking expose about her pedofile serial-rapist parents, & years of childhood sexual abuse by her father (convicted & jailed for same), (2) I outed Piers Morgan back in the late 80s, when I was all of 13 (tons of discussion re same online), (3) I outed H.P Lovecraft a few years ago (again, within a couple of hours of my first look at the guy); far too much to go into detail about here, quite a bizarre story in fact, anyway (4) Michael Moorcock; admittedly a vastly superior author to Tolkien the sleep-aid, but...again, too much to go into (except JC = Jerry Cornelius = Joseph Campbell / Jesus Christ / JC shennanigans; I've seen the documents, people! Nabokov wrote in 4 languages and knew many more. Even in English he wrote in many styles. He loved chess problems. His wife was a key part of his creative process. His family had everything, lost everything. His father was assassinated. He spoke English with a Scottish accent. Lolita was about many things. He mocked Freud and his simplistic use of symbols. In his lifetime he saw the best and worst of humanity. Close up. Quiz question: where did he write his first novel and why is that relevant?
