So cw 2m and 70cm? Is that useful in the UK or something? Its pretty neat the firmware opens this up but in the US I've never encountered cw on either band. Other than repeaters IDing

Many CW beacons. I think if one could transmit&receive in CW it would be very interesting for VHF/UHF DX and also for propagation studies.

People having trouble with the serial usb programming cable. Make sure you press in the plug into the UV K5 properly. First try it may not be in enough.

@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones I went for hours trying to work out why my device wasn't responding with the cable, and realised that it needed a firm push in. It may a sound and went right in. It's like the USB port is also not so nice with some cables. They catch.

I just picked up a UV-K5 (99) model. I am new to this radio. I have a Baofeng uv-5r that I mostly us for commercial FM radio stations. This radio I cannot receive any FM radio stations. Maybe I got a garbage radio??

Unlike the baofeng, out of the box this radio does not have commercial fm scanning. You have to dial it in with the up/down buttons like an old car radio. Modified firmwares support fm station scanning.

Press F then hold down 0 ,it works very well on Broadcast Radio .

@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones I can get it to turn on to the FM Broadcast radio but the reception is almost non-existent. I thought it wasn't working at all at first but i started to walk around in my home to see if that would help and i found that if i am in one particular spot with the radio's antenna pointed in one particular direction the station i am on will come in. My baofeng witll come ini anywhere in my home crystal clear. And now I just noticed that when i hit the button on the left side of the radio at the bottom the light (torch) will come on but no button on the radio will turn it off and after being turned on none of the other buttons on the radio will work for anything and the only way to turn the light out and gain button function again is to turn the radio off with the knob and then turn it back on.....is this normal?

@@jawhinge5720 I can get this radio to scan in Broadcast FM. It just will not pick stations hardly at all. Scratch that, It was scanning in FM mode until I accidentally saved a channel and now it doesn't scan.

Have they removed CW from this with an update to firmware? tried all this and cant find the QRZ to access entering callsign as of today

hello please answer me i don't understand i can't change the frequency i have install the fimware but when i tape frequency on the keyboard he want not change he return at the previus frequency and do a bip like im doing something not correctly i can change only with button up or down ... but if i enter for exemple 446.000 or others he back on the previousely frequency that he have accept because i have make him with button up or down ... i don't understand i have change the step also the squelch on low but nothing but i don't think its that because i have try to make a frequency with the button up and then i have return on the previusly frequency and try to tape this frequency with the keyboard but he don't want he return to the frequency he was before .....

for peoples who don't understand why they can't change frequency with the keyboard directly he back to previously frequency you have to tape the key 0 fm in the end at your frequency for ex 446.000 and tape 0 fm i release that because i was don't understand why that not work...

Seems like a lot of trouble to navigate through all of this for no useful value. I haven't used CW on 2 meters since the 1960's. All of this alternate firmware is interesting, but not very practical.

Yes it is a nice mod … the only problem is that it reverses power settings on cps chirp and plays with your squelch settings … a big no no … i went back to original firmware … my radio works better now … All these mods has fun on one end but you pay for it on the otherhand … best keep it as default… radio works well as intended… VK3EAN
