Couldn't risk it. If it didn't go down the pike's spikes would make it impossible to get up again. I imagine he'll come back later and try again. He was sipping water to lubricate his throat for the swallow, but even that didn't work.

Pike is a terror. Heron is a terror too. It's just bio-mechanics in action. The heron's larger leverage frame build dominates the pike's jaw and tail power. Mouth and throat keeps drying out. Got to rewet it before swallowing.

That is a SMALL pike. A decent pike would try to eat the heron. I can remember a report of a pike being found, that had swallowed a fully grown swan up to it's body. The pike probably could not regurgitate the swan, because of the direction that the feathers face as they grow. This was over 50 years ago, and possibly in the Easton Evening News, the local paper to Norwich, Norfolk, England.

Klopt. Reigers drinken geregeld als ze een prooi naar binnen werken. Een mol maken ze soms even nat. En achteraf drinken ze meestal ook een aantal keer.

Heron eats a huge fish. Heron is satisfied with a full belly. Heron then takes off and flies to its nesting tree about 1/2 mile away. A Nissan Tundra pulls out of a car wash sparkling clean. The owner is happy as she sips a mocha frappuccino. She leaves the car wash to go to her home about 1/2 mile away. Heron flies over the road and drops a massive a load on the shiny Nissan below. "Kushsplat" disgusting nasty Heron poo all over the car. Sure am glad elephants don't fly.

Oh ... come on ... sluicing off the gore from its beaktip from its repeated impaling technique used to "kill" the pike. Notice the small run up and head repositioning to get maximum drive and thrust. Sometimes they repeatedly dunk and wet avian or mammalian prey to help lubricate them for swallowing whole too ...
