Excellent review as always. I’m also a fan of using an interface like the Steinberg range so you can use any XLR microphone. Once you have a lightning to USB adapter you can use pretty much any USB interface or device too.

Not something I'd pay $150, I think you'd get better performance from the Behringer UMC22 and a decent $100~ mic. Or a UMC204HD (or 202HD) and the MXL V67G or used AT2020 should fall at around or $150 as well. You'll lose the iOS compatibility but let's be honest I doubt you're going to want to do serious recording with the mic and an iPhone because you probably won't have a shockmount with you. A decent budget interface and quality budget mic with a laptop (even an old one) would make a much more "professional" portable recording solution. Also something important to note this mics (even the XLR one) have a small diaphragm electret capsule. Normal for USB mics but they're marketing these as being large diaphragm condensers and say 1 inch capsule but I believe that's one inch overall. If you get your hands on the iRig Studio XLR version I'd like to hear about that mic, but I bet it's going to still be overboosted on the highs. The USB version here made your voice sounds waaaay to nasally. I hear this harshness behind the clear (but way too bright) recording and it really bugs me because it's like there are two very different tones fighting. The AT4040 is a good example of what a really bright mic should sound like. I always feel like an idiot for posting such long comments people probably don't read.
@Podcastage6 жыл бұрын
John Jackson yeah. In my written review I talk about the nasally tone as well. It was very apparent when comparing it to a flatter mic like the nt1.

@BrianMPoole6 жыл бұрын
I bought it today as the MF Stupid Deal of the Day. I sorta expected it wouldn’t keep pace with a decent XLR condenser mic, but I bought this for the ability to drop demo tracks from the road with just the mic and my iPad. I wouldn’t have paid reg price for it ($160 on MF) but at $90; I took a chance. As for the reviewer’s high end complaint, I’m hoping IKM’s Mic Room will compensate for that.

Another suggestion for your poll: Sennheiser MK4. Large diaphragm (real) condenser, $300 (+100 w/ shockmount), seems to sound pretty great. Maybe once the budget has recovered from the Neumann attack... ;)
@Tazmanian_Ninja4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this review! The latency + emphasized highs make it a no-go for me. It's so time-consuming to battle sibilant, harsh recordings. Hence I'm looking for a very flat mic to supplement the ones I have. Ideally, I'd like a ribbon mic, but then I'd also need a preamp, since there are no USB ribbon mics (sadly).

Hi Bandrew. Thanks for the review. It sounds like (based on your reviews) that of all the portable IOS mics, you'd favor the Shure MV51. Per your suggestion at the end of the review, I'd look at pairing my CAD M179 with the Shure MVi as a potential travel rig.

Latency refers to a delay in the time that it takes for the sound your recording being played into your headphones. Here are two signal path examples for the monitoring. Zero Latency Voice > Microphone > Interface > Headphone output With Latency Voice > Microphone > Interface > Recording Software > Processing > Interface > Headphone output

I like your videos because it's very hard for me to really hear the nuances you talk about, and listening to what you say, and comparing that to what I hear, makes me feel like I'm learning more about sound, and mics in general. I have a bunch of guitars (I barely know how to use them) and a couple amps, and moving around the treble, and bass sliders on the amps always mesmerized me. Obviously I could hear a difference, but I couldn't really understand what the difference was. Of course scientifically I know it all has to do with sound wave manipulation, and changing frequencies etc, but actually understanding it with my ears is something else; if you were to play the same note twice with different settings on the amp I wouldn't be able to tell you what was changed. Listening to your descriptions of how mics sound, and then comparing that to how I hear them on my headphones (which are supposed to be fairly neutral in sound), it has helped me to more readily be able to hear that difference. Anyways, Ik teaching people about how sound works isn't really the point of your channel, it's certainly not why I originally started watching, nor is it the *only* reason I continue to watch (I also just find microphones to be fascinating in general), it's just something I thought was cool about how your channel has affected me and I figured I'd share :)
@anthonyc40336 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of this mics sound. It seems to have very harsh spikes in the high end when you talk. Also $150 for a travel mic seems a bit high. But it does start with an I, so it should be expected. By the way, You look exhausted. Hope all is well.

I'm so disappointed by this mic. I am having such a difficult time recording audio and video! I've downloaded the app for free, but if I want to improve (ie: "clean up" etc..) the vocal/performance, I have to pay for extras. The retailer did not tell me this.
