SampleTank is far less flexible. You get the samples you get. Minimal chance to change them. Whereas Halion is a full workstation with synthesis and complex modulated interconnected chains of effects and audio generation. Also SampleTank needs about 400 gigs of hard drive space to install the full Sample Tank 4 MAX sample set.

First off, thanks for watching. Well I guess a lot of my musical lexicon comes from gospel music, some of which verge on neo soul and such. I am sort of a melting pot of all of the wonderful music I have been exposed too; especially in high school where I first heard Spyro Gyra and had the great benefit of learning from Mike Tracy and Jamie Abersold who really were some of my jazz influences as they would come and do classes in our Jazz Band period in High School. It also didn’t hurt that the drummer and guitarist in high school were really big fans of Rush and so we would get into some of that. I remember playing Subdivisions in 5/4 for the first time on the Rhodes; pretty cool 😎 I enjoy what David Benoit has done along with Vince Guarldi, Jeff Lorber are some who also come to mind.

Great video... can you relocate library on an external hard drive ??
@PraiseTracks5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. That is a great question; I had not thought about that possibility but it seems you could do it. I always recommend with sample based instruments to always place your libraries on the fastest drive possible for best results, typically using an SSD. If you had an external SSD drive on a fast USB interface then it you should be good. I actually use a MacBook Pro when I play on the road and use a USB SSD and it has worked alright.

Simeon Amburgey thanks for your reply
@ezrashanti4 жыл бұрын
@@PraiseTracks This should not matter, as all sample-based instruments will load all of the samples into memory first. So it may take longer to load up an instrument, but there will not be an issue with latency based on the hard drive speed.
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
Ezra Shanti , most virtual instruments that have to manage playing back large libraries have a way to manage RAM and STORAGE. SampleTank provides several settings to balance how much is loaded into memory and what is streamed from the drive. HALionSonic and Kontakt also have various settings to manage sharing the load between managing large samples. There are still times that even though most of the sound is loaded into local memory, there are still bits that are streamed from storage at times. That’s another reason to load your system with as much memory as you can afford as in the long run as you mentioned, you will ultimately get the best overall performance when paired with fast disk storage. Thanks as always for watching and the great feedback.

How Would you compare the quality of the samples to other rompler/samplers (like komplete/kontakt/omnisphere etc)? Some are not sure about the quality of the sounds from IK multimedia and I myself have no experience with any quality samplers as I’ve always used cheap ones. Someone for example pointed out that the guitars, strings and horns sound bad. I just dont rly know. Great video, def got the skills! Thanks Edit: is this sampletank 4 MAX or Standard or SE?
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
Well as SampleTank has grown they always seem to roll in samples and patches from earlier versions which is nice but sometimes they include sounds that might not sound the greatest as they were from years ago. I think the current version really stands up very nice with other virtual instruments, especially when it comes to the way you can layer the sounds along with the collection of effects taken right from T-Racks. This was using SampleTank4 Max and the new Yamaha C7 Piano patches are really nice along with some of the newer guitars. Thanks so much for watching and let me know if you ever have any additional questions? All the best.

You have to be very careful when trying to do this. You have to copy or move the entire content folder to your new drive and then go into settings and you should see where you can change the location to point to your content location. Again, be very mindful when doing this 🤓 I think that there is a possibility that the presets are stored in your USER DOCUMENTS App Data. I will have to check. Barton, SampleTank 4 does not have an Instrument Manager. As I mentioned earlier when you install and run SampleTank it will look for your previous SampleTank library locations and bring those in so you can use them with SampleTank 4. I hope that is helpful and that I am understanding your issue properly? Just let me know.

Thanks so much! I will work on a solution and get back with you soon. It’s very easy once you get the basic principle down that each slot in ST4 is addressed on a different MIDI channel and you route the various MIDI tracks to the appropriate channel. When you insert the VST from Cakewalk it will give you an option to create the MIDI tracks and Audio Outputs for the plugin.

Yes, MODO Drum is really nice. I have been using it a lot on some of my recent projects.
@PraiseTracks5 жыл бұрын
@@dimafg1 , I always love a challenge and thus I have found a workaround ;^) SampleTank 4 has 16 instrument slots so that being the case you could load multiple instances of the drum kit and create a corresponding MIDI and Audio track. There would be a couple of ways to go from there; the Dumkit instrument itself has level controls for the various elements so you could turn the parts you would not want to hear down thereby isolating the individual part. Alternatively you would have already copied the MIDI file to each additional drum channel so you could delete the unwanted drum notes in the piano roll so you could have a MIDI track that just triggered the Kick drum for instance. Another benefit of having different drum slots is that you could mix and match kit sounds using different kits loaded into the various instrument slots. You could also use the other slots to "layer" drums on top of each other with each kit having its own mix and effects section. I think I feel a video coming on ;^) I hope that might be helpful?

are the samples from sample tank 4 really that good?
@PraiseTracks3 жыл бұрын
SampleTank is similar to standalone workstation keyboards, it is that there are some really nice standout sounds (the new C7 Piano is really nice), and some of the guitars but with so much content you do have sounds that might not be as strong as others. They also include a lot of the legacy SampleTank content from previous versions, and some can sound dated. What makes SampleTank interesting is the workstation approach where you can have 16 parts in one instance of the plugin, having access to the built in effaces, keyboard zones, splits, and layers, so there are some benefits to it.

So does the looping of the pattern stay on beat or just go off beat after 16 bars like on sampletank 3
@PraiseTracks5 жыл бұрын
Keith thanks so much for watching and for bringing this to my attention. This was actually MIDI output captured using Steinberg's Groove Agent 2. I took a measure or two of MIDI notes and looped it throughout the demo using it to play the SampleTank 4 drums. I updated this info in the description as well.

Good stuff! You're talented! You've got that Billy Joel vibe to your playing... doing the soft stuff but throwing in that rock n roll attack when you feel like it. Also the software doesn't hold you back AT ALL! It helps keep you inspired due to being so easy to set up.

Is it possible to store the samples to an ext storage
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but due to the streaming nature of some of the larger patches it really needs to be fast. Also it’s not just samples but the library structure has to remain intact to work; IK has a very specific was that everything is organized. I hope that helps and thanks so much for watching.

@@PraiseTracks so how do I do this then? I have fast ext storage :)
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
Great, just create a folder on the external drive and when you run the installation for the sound content just always point it to that location. Each soundset is in a ZIP file, you extract and run an install application which asks for the location. It is a process, especially with SampleTank 4 Max but you should be fine. Let me know if I can assist in any way.

How import instrument to Sampletank 4 ?
@PraiseTracks5 жыл бұрын
During the installation of SampleTank 4 it will locate your previous SampleTank library install locations and perform an import when ST4 is started for the first time. You can also indicate where your libraries are stored in case they are not picked up initially. Any time there is a change in the sound library ST4 will rescan everything to make sure things are where they need to be.

It is very good. For SampleTank 4 they recorded the C7 fresh with several different perspectives. It has a nice cut through as you would expect from a C7.

Simeon Amburgey ok im looking at getting this.. Considering all thee pianos you review so far where does this one Rank? Especially when it comes to realism
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
@@jayrichardson6144 , you have to put it into context with the rest of the package you are getting and treat it something like purchasing a multitimbral workstation. The piano in SampleTank are great however they are limited somewhat from having a dedicated piano sample library as far as the amount of tweakability and such. What SampleTank does give you is the ability to layer and the TRacks derived effects are amazing so there are a lot of great possibilities. I would say that it is more in line with a straight up pop type of piano with beauty and attitude. Hope that helps.

Simeon Amburgey so great for Gospel? In your opinion what would be the best overall piano Vst
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
I really avoid using the term best piano as each one has something different to bring, that is why you may need to have a couple in your setup. What I would say however is that SampleTank 4 would give you lots of possibilities for creating some nice Gospel songs as you can leverage the other sounds to stack, layer and split with it. There are a lot of places it could go. I might try and do just a focused ST4 Piano vid as that might help. Also you can now download SampleTank 4 CE for free and it comes with some nice starter and preview sounds that you might want to check out.

Definitely better than st3. I bought st3 SE 3 years ago and I used it maybe twice but this version is refreshing. The guitars/horns and strings still suck. The keys section is great no doubt about that.

Delightful demo once again. I have to say, though, I tink sample tank is a wasted opportunity. It could have been so much more - compete with Kontakt even but this business of not being able to see instrument controls (not talking about the generic UI) is inexcusable. So now if you want to edit the patch for that instrument, you can only do it by loading it's own dedicated plugin.
@PraiseTracks4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a missed opportunity for sure, especially since SampleTank was the first virtual workstation plugin. If you do not have a very clear direction starting out you find yourself trying to make something work that might not have been the best to start with. It would have been good at some point to do a reset and start fresh, especially with the advances in the recent years. This is not on,y true in editing the instruments but the task of managing the instrument libraries themselves, it can be a huge task to say the least. I do think once you get past some of the initial issues there still is a lot to love about the platform. Here’s hoping that SampleTank 5 (just speculating) might address some of those. Thanks so much for watching and insightful feedback. All the best.

OK, so in one of the “EMPTY” instrument slots you should see what I call a “hamburger” button ext to the words “Load Instrument”; this is the icon that has three lines stacked. When you click that icon you should see a menu pop up that gives you the “Load Samples” dialog. Remember this is to create an instrument from your audio files and not intended to import a SampleTank library.
