Right at the end. As the last boss stops emitting energy waves and the scene starts and the ship positions itself for the final barrage. According to what I found the ship says "Release the restraining device. Using the released power may result in the possibility of destruction of the ship. Was I helpful for you? I am deeply grateful to you." Basically, there must've been some kind of limiter on the ship to restrain its power output. But he realized at the end that they weren't going to normally have enough power to destroy the core. If they let the core escape now it might just return and what would they do then? I also don't recall if it was the ship that was talking to him or the engineer who helped design and build the ship. Maybe he was communicating with that person instead. The pilot then disengages the limiter on the ship and unleashes the final barrage. He dies without ever knowing if he really accomplished his mission. Truly a heroic end. T__T

Your ship going down before Stone Like is such an important aspect of this game's storytelling. Not at the same time, not just after, but well before the last shot is fired and the outcome is unclear. It aligns with all of the establishments the game's text makes since the first 3 lines of text, and holistically it speaks to the nature of risk and aligning yourself to ideals that are never certain to come true, yet being content in not the result but the attempt that was made. Ikaruga is the most beautiful shmup ever created, combining bullet hell with puzzle solving and poetry to deliver a message that resonates deeper as an individual progresses deeper into their own lives and experiences the stages first hand. It is all parts intellectual, emotional, reactionary and reflective achieved in under 30 minutes of presentation. To this day the fact that Ikaruga exists by human creation blows my mind.

i have a theory, many say this game is a spiritual sequel to radiant silvergun, but i think it's a direct sequel spoilers: after defeating the stone-like (the golden tetrahedron), it's revealed that it's an atemporal being who seeks to stop humanity from destroying itself, by resetting time until they realize the error of their warmongering nature, creator, the robot, is the only link between timelines, as he's always found alongside the stone-like, this version was sent back to the past, carrying the dna of the protagonists, buster and reana, which he used to clone then in the new timeline, thus restarting the time loop. here's where ikarouga fits, after contless timeloops, creator takes matters into it's own hands and upgrades himself into a modified silvergun, and faces the stone-like, however, he had a power limiter holding him back, as to not stress his body, and in his final moments, he deactivates the limiter, unleashing all his power and destroying itself, his true nature would never be truly understood, but in that timeline, creator would be remembered a hero and humanity's saviour. thus manking can now move on to a brighter future.

Testiment of skill.... I remember playing this game on 360 and I ragequit on the boss of Stage 2 after this game kicked my ass. Mind you this is a very good game, but damn it gets brutal at points. I watch playthroughs of games like this and they impress me. Good skills :)

This game is already hard enough on Easy , imagine trying to do this on Hard......you earned yourself a medal

I remember the first time I heard of Ikaruga almost a lifetime ago. Bought it for the GameCube. It kicked my arse for 18 months until I finally managed to beat it. It’s still in my top 10 all time. Although I’m now 40, and can no longer challenge it, it’s still one hell of a ride.

Dark Souls is a walk in the park compared to this. Anyone can complete Dark Souls, sure you'll die, but then its about learning why and where you died and trying to avoid it the next time and slowly progressing. This game takes alien level skills to chain whole levels and get S++ ranks on Hard. Even on Easy and Normal its very hard to chain whole levels, nevermind the whole game

wow! you are not Human... you are Super Human. That was amazing. I can't even beat level 2 haha I was never good at this style of gaming but I like watching. This was amazing, I have never seen such a beautiful game. My brain does hurt because I can not process all the data going on. man.. Great Job!

This game reminds me of Raiden... with a health bar on the top of the screen from all the enemies and bosses, switching sides (light and dark) called polarity, no bombs, slow motion boss explosions, bullets don't hurt you if you are on the light or dark side of your ship and it just builds up power to release from your ship, a chain meter, a boss warning intro, and no upgrades.

Magnifique jeu, une référence dans le milieu du shoot. Le seul problème est qu'il est tellement dur qu'on a pas un instant pour admirer les jolis décors.

Imagine your some leader of this advanced civilization that has built these super structures that support countless souls who live and work and grow in these technological marvels. Then imagine a single ship coming in and F***ing things up and no matter how much funds and resources and souls you throw at it, it does not stop until it gets to you. Man I would be so heated seeing all this destroyed!!!

This is one of those games that looks so good the backgrounds get you killed. You want to look at the details of the beautiful backdrops and forget that you have a hell storm of bullets coming at you.
