Don't forget to run a level vertically on the studs to see if the wall is level. I installed my uppers and the L cabinet had a 1/2 inch gap between the boxes. I took everything down and had to shim the suspention rail. On one side of the wall my studs were level, on the other side, I had to shim over a 1/4".
@DaruDhillon3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonathan for sharing your tip! It's always better to take things apart and do it right. You'll never regret doing it right. Like you did. Great job!!
@jonathantromsness14912 жыл бұрын
@bina nocht In many houses the wall is not vertically level which can cause really big gaps in corner "L" cabinets. If you're not installing a corner cabinet then it's not as critical. Put a 4' level on the wall and see how it looks. Check in all the spots that you're going to fasten your cabinet track. If it needs to be shimmed on the top, then put some washers or something behind the track. If it needs a shim on the bottom, you can do this once the cabinet is hung with a shim. Hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, then I suggest getting someone to help you out in person.

Thanks for the video and I appreciate your willingness to hear feedback (I concur with the comments about too fast, albeit A+ for just getting to the point!). I'm installing LVP and the floor guys told me to install cabs *first*, which puts my Ikea Knoxhults on concrete slab. I keep getting conflicting info on this (ditto for bathroom vanity). What say you? Also, my cabs have cheap adjuster feet that keep moving on their own accord- any tips on how to make them behave? Thanks again (and I'm jelly of your job- I only get to DIY on my after work hours)!
@DaruDhillon3 ай бұрын
Love the feedback, thanks. I agree cabinets first then floor. If your feet are moving you can try wedging a thin shim under the feet to stop it from moving. Sometime cabinets are installed to sit on a wood frame behind the toe kick too. Securing the cabinet to the wood, wood to wall. It won’t move but a little more work.

Thanks for the quick edit - was getting board of watching people slowly tighten screws! How did you get it on its legs without breaking them?
@DaruDhillon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it actually really easy to install the legs. They simply push in. Once you adjust them they will firmly stay in place and are designed to carry a lot of weight. If they pop out while you are moving your cabinets, not a big deal at all, just push them back in place. Good luck with your install Pennifold. They are great kitchens. I hope you love yours!

The backing of those base cabinets is so flimsy, especially when you need to cut out for the plumbing. I'm thinking of replacing it with sturdier plywood. What do you do?

I haven't had any issues for kitchen cabinets. For closets I reinforce the back with a strip on wood on the back to hold it in.

I'm installing a small cabinet with minimal tools and this will be really helpful, thanks! Except how did you cut down the rail? Would a hand saw be sufficient?
@DaruDhillon3 жыл бұрын
I’ve used a hacksaw in the past for cutting the rail. A handsaw with a blade for metal will work. It’s faster to cut halfway through on one side, then flip the rail over to finish your cut. It will weaken the metal faster. You can bend it too to speed it along. Good luck! Thanks, I’m glad you found it helpful!

my floor is pretty uneven... could I use the mid point of my slope? Can the front legs be shorter than the height specified... and then go to higher on the other end?
@DaruDhillon2 жыл бұрын
It’s best to go from the high point to avoid problems with your countertops not lining up with your stove. They should be at the same height. Also it will allow for clearance if you have a dishwasher. Appliances have legs that can be always be adjusted to make them higher. I work in older homes with uneven floors too and it’s the safer option to go from the high point. If your floors are terribly uneven , you should double check your countertop height around your kitchen to make sure you’ll be at the correct height for your stove. Good luck David 👍🏽

which cabinet screws did you use to join the cabinets together?
@PhoBoDacBiet10 ай бұрын
1:46 I used #10 3inch wood screws that you're showing here.. am I in trouble? They dont seem bend the ikea washer though, or slip through the gap. Would I potentially mess up/loosen the screw hole in the wood if I replace the wood screws with the washer head screws? What if I sized up and used #14 instead of #10 for the new screws?

We are installing our own kitchen cabinets. Do I raise the bottom of the lower cabinets to match the height of the floor? I want to be able to get the dishwasher in and out easily.
@DaruDhillon2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, the measurement in the video is the height that IKEA recommends measured up from your finished floor. That distance will allow clearance for your dishwasher and so that your countertop lines up with your stove.
@jamesnicol98102 жыл бұрын
In the process of installing an ikea kitchen and my opinion is that if you have an older house then the rail system with make your work harder. Also ikea does not give room for plumbing so will need a lot of hacking if your services run on the wall. If your walls are not plumb and wishing to use 200/220 units then you may find it difficult to make all units level. I can go on and on but long story short. Ikea was not the best choice for our upgrade.
@DaruDhillon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your struggles James it may help someone in a similar situation. If your walls are in rough shape that can involve a lot of shimming, starting with the high point in your wall. But that can be a bit of a headache lining them all up to match. When running pipes in front of your drywall, I have installed my rail built out on a 2X4s. I extended the depth of the countertop a few inches to allow for the plumbing. Appreciate your feedback James. Hope you were able to find a solution.
