Just get an oscillating tool and a metal cutting blade and you can cut that quickly. Just make sure that you don't accidentally cut any wires.

Thanks for a great video demo. Instructions couldn't have been clearer and more well explained. I presume this method can be applied to a flat roof deck as the subframe doesn't need to be screwed down onto the roof?

I am about to plant 80 arborvitae in a hedge, and am opting to try to create a tight formal hedge like you showed here. How agressive do you prune then when first trying to shape the hedge? And how straight/vertical/plum are the trees in this video (its hard to tell)? Are they still sloped like a triangle or have they been trimmed to be straight-up?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 6 күн бұрын
I don’t trim the hedges in height until they reach the hedge height I want. I start trimming the fronts or backs end of year two or start of three. It just depends on how quickly they are growing. Ultimately it about establishing and maintaining the look you want and that’s entirely up to you. You can plant them further apart at 24” or as directed on the tag. 💚🌲

@@DaruDhillon Thank you! Mine are a little smaller than the ones you planted so it sounds like I can safely wait the 3 years before trying to shape the hedge to be more flat and even. Yours is the only video I could find that actually talked about and showed a real hedge with arborvitae so thank you so much! I am also probably going to follow your deck video too to make a small wood deck. Love your channel.

so Far out of 8 videos on this topic you are the first to do it proper and use 2x12s and maintain a heel edge greater than 5.5 inches only on question did you use sealer on all cut edges and also if you are ever making stringers greater than 6 feet it is recommended to remove bounce and add strength to use a 2x6 runner on the heal edge on the inner side of the joists but you young lady get a A+
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 5 күн бұрын
Thanks, I use end grain sealer on all cut exposed wood that is not covered with joist tape. If you want to add a runner that’s good to beef it up. Bring on the beef.

Hi Daru, great video. I'm redoing my wood deck now. In your video, you had metal corner brackets inside of your outer deck frame. Which ones are those?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 5 күн бұрын
These are galvanized corner brackets made by the same manufacturer as the joist hangers. Hangers are linked in the description box. I picked up the brackets from my local lumber store. Thanks for the question!
@tommythomas1858
@tommythomas1858 8 күн бұрын
This is a great video. You list the dimensions of the lumber as well as other specifications. Can you make a video on how to add a railing system to this deck? Or how you would construct the deck differently if you knew you were going to use a railing system? I plan to make my deck like this but the joists will sit on post that are inserted into the Tuffblocks so it will be 30" high. How do I plan for a railing system?

@@DaruDhillon I see that your 10' long 2X8 joists are on 12" centers. But I didn't see the exact measurement for Tuffblock spacing. Since you have a 10' span and three Tuffblocks and it appears that the outer two Tuffblocks are 1' away from the rim joists and the middle Tuffblock is equidistant between the two outer Tuffblocks making the middle Tuffblock 5' away from each rim joist, that would make the distance between the centers of the Tuffblocks 4'. That would also make the centers of the paver base trenches 4' apart since the center of the Tuffblock rests on the center of the trench. Is that correct? If so, is 4' your recommended spacing between Tuffblocks supporting any length of a 2X8 joist? How wide are the paver base trenches? Are the paver base trenches level with the weed barrier fabric?

At least an inch noising overhang for adequate heel space when building a deck. Cut the bottom of the first riser, ground contact riser, the thickness of the material you'll be using for your treads, if it's different from your decking material. Measure your overall rise at the point where the stringers contact the ground. If you understand how to calculate rafter lengths, you can use the same method to get exact stair stringer lengths and very specifically placed stair stringers, if needed.

@b.powell3480
@b.powell3480 9 күн бұрын
Great video!, however you have to take into consideration the riser at the top of the deck boards and make sure the thickness of the deck boards don't exceed the total rise of 7 inches to the first step tread, also the bottom of your stringer needs to compensate for the thickness of the bottom step tread to your brickwork or stringer pad, as if it's too short or tall of the rise there will be a tripping/loss of balance as your going up or down the steps to the deck. This also applies to stairs as well!!, also, check with local building inspector for modification of these run and rise measurements when building steps for senior/ handicap persons, sometimes a rise of 5 1/2 inches instead of 7 inches can be easier to go up or down steps/stairs without falling, tread depth stays the same
@DaruDhillon

Thank you. I probably won't be doing any more stairs, but I had to learn this when I did. It's actually not that hard, when you measure the treads and the risers and lay them out on the stringers. But it's tricky at first before you figure it out, and I ruined a good piece of wood the first time :-)
