The fiddly ritual of assembling IKEA products is set to become a thing of the past as the furniture giant introduces products that snap together “like a jigsaw puzzle”.

I've never understood the reputation of IKEA being difficult to assemble. They're fun to build
@Najobajo

If you look at other companies from Sweden, they're reputation for "no tool assembly" products is even better. Less waste, less requirements, and the portability factor is everything. Not to mention, they focus solely on the "no tool" aspect, so they're products are even more sturdy. It's a niche area, but it's like McDonald's evolving the food industry; ikea gotta get in or get left behind before these other companies hit international distribution.

Probably because its pretty boring. You just repeat the movement shown in 0:53 for every of the four legs. Assembly complete?

bought a Lisabo table (the big one) about six months ago, last week had to tighten the screws holding the legs in place as the whole table started wobbling

Wood will expand and contract with humidity changes in the house. A “no screw” solution will just result in bitter customer over the long run, in 3 years those joins will wobble like a jelly

I can see some companies come with plastic dowels and special bits to allow people to make those assemblies themselves.

Seems there's a good chance the user would break it when trying to take it apart again, given that it doesn't look very strong in the first place. Perhaps that's the point - it gets trashed and the user buys another one.

TONAH The thing is, some companies have strong policies when it comes to innovation, usually new stuff becomes property of the company if it was developed during your work hours and specially if they are paying him to innovate and create new products and processes.

yeah, if he made it on Ikea's dime then it's ikea idea, no doubt about that. Maybe the lessons of this project goes into his next idea for his own company or start up. Thankful to live in a time that individual focused effort with limited backing or investment can be greatly rewarded . The time of making conglomerate companies richer while individuals reap nothing is a thing of the past. Granted mass marketing does help, but with clever techniques and a GOOD product, you can do a LOT with a few thousands of dollars.

The unusual thing about the approach used by IKEA here seems to be the requirement that it is easy to assemble and disassemble without tools. I am not an expert on woodworking by any stretch, though I do know that while Japanese woodworkers did reach a particularly high level of advancement in the use of wooden joints, it is not unknown from other places in the world. Do you have any reason to believe this specific design of dowel was used in Japanese woodworking?

The table was easy to put together, but cabinets I bought with the same wedge technology looks awful. It’s impossible to ‘unlock’ the wedges if they accidentally shift while assembling, so I’m stuck with cabinet corners that don’t go together properly. Lame.

I recently bought a plastic trash can for my room so my dog wouldn't get into it because you have to step on it to open it. And it has this snap together thing and it took me like 20 minutes to figure out a fucking 5 step trash can that can't even hold a paper plate in it.

My father taught me how to use tools and to work on things in order for me to know them. If you want things to stay assembled, it takes a drill and some drywall screws and it won't fall apart. half my IKEA furniture has been "upgraded" by me because I don't want it to fall apart. IF we decide to purchase any other items from IKEA, this snap together technique will be upgraded with $1.00 worth of drywall screws in order to keep it together. TA-DA.

I'm not digging it. Its not difficult to assemble Ikea furniture with tools & metal hardware. Ikea is known for being inexpensive & pretty low quality. This "tongue in groove" wood on wood construction is great for a FINAL and *permanent* high quality piece of furniture, not something you take home in a box & assemble yourself.

It's not A good thing but a shameful thing if you dont know how to use a basic tool. A screw driver is so basic in nature that if you seriously can't figure out how to use one then your life is worthless. We should never cater to stupidity. Continue in progress and making things easier but don't use stupidity as the excuse.

sooo... that would make up the majority of furniture in the world... ok, got it.
@Rand25449
@Rand25449 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. The majority of furniture is low quality. Just as with most other industries. Using metal to hold wood together is never the best method because wood is "alive" after it's been cut. The moisture content in the air causes wood to shrink and grow, which will eventually render the nails and screws useless. But if the joints that hold the furniture together are wood themselves, then the whole piece is allowed to shrink and grow as one, guaranteeing usability for generations.
