That was spectacular. The fluidity and fluency in Gogen Sensei's kata is simply mind-expanding. He was a true grandmaster of the art of karate. His legendary status is well deserved.

Gogen Sensei was like a father to me. I lived and graduated out of his SENMON GAKKOU College in 1976. He was an extraordinary man, a wonderful teacher and a spirtual leader besides being an amazing karate and yoga teacher. My school teaches his way and I have not changed his system that I learnt for 38 years. My school Goshin kan has benefited greatly from his teaching. Thank you Gogen Sensei.

The two guys were training and all, and I as like, alright that's badass, but when the teacher says something and bam busts out his moves and does a kata, It was like poetry man. Karate has always stuck a chord in me for some reason. My eyes teared up. It was amazing man.

Great archives. I'll have to tell my students to check these out (Yamaguchi videos) out. Sometime one of them will question the way I taught them a kata after viewing youtube video's. These ones will show them that I am not crazy, but am teaching them the forms mostly how they were done by The Cat. For Bagua2pnt); the last Kata Yamaguchi did on the video is the highest and last Gogu form "suparempei".

the song is Nest - Land Behind the Mist. the only way I could find it was by listening very carefully to the lyrics, and googling them. Indeed, it is very, very beautiful. I think of this video when I'm in need of motivation. spiritual, physical, and mental.

And Sensei Deana Naidu was the calmest most centered man i ever met as a wild child who made me want to follow him by his diligence to his Sensei. Class of 86, 87 & 88. I only remember one thing you ever said to me and i was being lazy at the back of the class as always. Good posture. Meant the world to me at the time. Im still in that stance in my mind. Thank you. P.S i remember lots actually. Yes Sensei was the answer always. Damn you were well mannered.. Goshin Kan!

He started doing Tensho, and part way through he changed it to Suparunpei. Yamaguchi learnt from one of Master Chojun Miyagis' older students. He didn't learn it right, probably due to the fact that he only spent a short time with him, before proclaiming himself the true successor to Master Miyagi. There are more people around more qualified than him, I'm afraid. especially if that was the quality of Kata he passed on.

Actually, my comments were not intended to sound like any kind of put down... or dismissal. I studied under George Taylor, and Tshutumo Oshima, in Shotokan, and I personally experienced changes, that were sometimes good, seldom bad, and always different... Oshima was a direct student of funikoshi, and certainly wasn't putting anyone down.....

He started with Suparempei, then put a small part of tencho after the third step. I wouldn't go so far as to say he didn't learn it right. Perhaps he just threw that part of tencho in there playing around. One of the Goju Associtations I was in learned the kata directly from him and he didn't put that part in it when teaching it. By the time he died and when the video was made he was about 60 in the film. Doing tencho under a cold water fall ! "Got to respect him!"

I seem to remember there's more than one video of Yamaguchi doing this unusual version of Suparempei. I occasionally do it this way myself, just for a change; but it never feels quite rght, somehow.

This is where karate and cultism where narrowly close. In a cult a guru is a tyran who has total command of his disciples. Guru usually seek fame and money. bruce lee too sought to create such cult around him. It can lead to fanaticism, which is were the "being a fan" word comes from.

Wan't Gogen yamaguchi a war criminal ? I remember an article in fighting arts international where some of his western students said as much.
@eugeneterrell51837 жыл бұрын
War criminal? Let it go man. That is not the way of martial arts. That is not the way of budo. Beside that question is not something we should be talking about on here. Too many crotch grabbing want to be's that know nothing about respect or about the war will get on here and show disrespect to those who gave their lives from both sides of the war. War is something we have no say in unless you are apart of it.

I know for a fact from family that was in WORLD WAR 2. It was ugly all day long. War is something that people or citizen do not have a choice in.
@vandamme63797 жыл бұрын
None of the Japanese soldiers had a choice. Just because they fought on the other side doesn't make them criminals. Just like my great grandfather wasn't a war criminal even though he killed people.
