My first sensei trained under The Cat. We did the same methods. 40 years ago, this is exactly how we trained. Then we visited his dojo in 1981. Yamaguchi -sensei was a true master. Totally devoted. His fighters were fearsome kick-ass karate men. Fast and powerful. However, after spending time where real violence happens, I had to evolve to reality-based training, to deal with criminal violence. This karate all has unspoken rules. A street ambush has no rules. I had to evolve for effective self-defense. But the early training years turned me from a 20 year-old wimp into somebody tough, disciplined and unafraid of getting hit. I don't regret a day of it. However, this training produces a lot of injuries which you pay for after you're fifty. This video is what it was really like in the old days. It served its purpose.

What path are you seeking? I can tell you what this training gives a devotee. Pls what it doesn't provide. I can also tell you which aspects of these methods are bad for the joints. The spirit-building and testing oneself to the limits and beyond was priceless. I don't know where such training exists these days. I left the world of formal martial arts organizations long ago. Yamaguchi-sensei had special energy. When he smacked you on the back during sanchin training, it was like a jolt of lightning. It was powerful, life-changing training. Ah, the ol days, before lawsuits for damages incurred in training.

Yes i totally agree i had this same kind of training over fourty years ago the training was rigorous but not very practical in a urban fighting situation.I won most of my street fights because i was in top shape from the training but we were not taught a sophisticated way of applying those technique. As it was back in those days most American instructors were just taught drills and not real fighting application. And yes i,am in my 60ths and i am feeling the repercussion for abusing my body with this type of training.

I wish I could see the people train karate like this video now, It seems that those days are gone...nowadays most martial art are poor quality , low level and over all very commercial.

what are you talking about? the level of realistic self defense is much higher now. in the old days they believe in mystery and bullshido a lot.
