Wow!!! Thank you so much!! I have been STRUGGLING trying to teach myself how to knitt socks. I have purchased EXPENSIVE video classes and several expensive books, although books are always good, but I just could NOT "get it". A friend recommended I try KZbin. I came upon your video and it all FINALLY clicked!! Your simple no frills, relaxed approach is reassuring. To see you actually drop stitches and make an "oops" PROVES. even normal "mistake making" humans CAN KNITT SOCKS!! BEST, sock video EVER!! Grammy WILL be passing out "HAND MADE" socks for Christmas, thanks to you!! :-)

Such a great video. I would never have had the courage to try socks without this video! One thing that would have been helpful for me is if you had paused between the major parts of the sock to show how the piece should look... how many stitches are on the needles, how many markers and how many stitches between the markers. I got a little lost down by the toe...and was not sure how many stitches should be between marker 2 & 3 and between marker 3 and 4. My socks came out fine, but I know there were a few mistakes in decreases along the way,

I started off very excited to begin this project. As in the beginning you explained so well and it made sense what I was working on, and i appreciated that. However, the further down the sock i went your directions started to make 0 sense, i constantly referred back to the written directions- but i am i visual learner( hence why i'm watching ur video lol). Maybe in ur future videos you could further explain EVERY DETAIL. for example, after the picking up 8 stitches I was completely lost bc u neglected to inform us how to do that part.I made up my own pattern for the rest of the sock. I do like your videos, but more detail and precise movements would be appreciated. also not skipping over main points that most people would struggle with.

My first knitting teacher taught us to make a hat with DPNs, so I am glad to have that skills, it doesn't confuse me...Magic Loop is too weird for me but I would like to get comfortable with that some day so I could do 2 socks at a time because I definitely have 2nd sock Syndrome! It boggles my mind in the comments that anyone could get Magic Loop either written or by video! If DPNs are confusing to someone I don't know how they could learn the alternative! Or I just have a Magic Loop disability :(

Hi, I'm really confused about the part where you pick up 8 stitches. My Heel flap and heel turning has more than 8 rows (6 for the 3 inch flap and 6 for the heel turning, and the last 1 knit row). If I pick up only 8 without skipping a stitch, I have a huge "hole" between the gusset and the instep. Can you please explain in more detail on how to pick up the stitches? Thank you.
@Bearleena8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm having problems at exactly this point too. I've picked up the 8 stitches and have them on the same needle as the first five, so that's 13 stitches - then the 10 instep stitches are opposite on another needle. I really don't know what you (and the written pattern) mean by 'knit across the 10 stitches' - with the second needle or with a third needle? How do I get the yarn over to the other side so I can pick up the 8 stitches on the other side. When you knit the 10 instep stitches do you pull the yarn tight between the needles? As Elle N says, this creates a gap below the 8 picked up stitches. I think Candace has the same problem, and the written pattern doesn't help at all, sadly. It's a pity, as the rest of the tutorial is really great and I've learned a lot. I've sent a mail to Lion Brand too asking for help - I'll post here if I find the answer.

I am currently done picking up and knitting 8 stitches however I haven't quite made it back to the 10 stitches on my stitch holder. As in picking up 8 wasn't quite enough to get me back there. Is this wrong? Should I pick up a few more? I thought this might be because the yarn I'm using is a tad less bulky than the yarn suggested and maybe I knitted more rows to Achieve the 3 inches? I hope this question makes sense! Please advise!! :)

Hey there! So, I'm knitting the second slipper and with both slippers I'm finding two giant holes on either side of the heels. I'm guessing it's where the 8th stitch is that we picked up for the gusset and foot. This is my first pair of socks, so I'm trying to troubleshoot. Do you think it's because I'm not spreading out those stitches that we picked up enough? Also, love love love your tutes! I basically learned how to knit from you. 😘
@naturada1379 жыл бұрын
+Sonia Parrella Yeah I had this problem for my first sock as well. I had it because I didn't properly pick up the stitches. You basically have to pull all the 8 stitches for the heel turning progressively closer to the gusset, so that you keep shortening the gap between the top of the heel turning needle and the gusset needle. Then you do the same thing on the other side except in the reverse direction. This video helps: "How to Knit Socks: Picking Up and Knitting the Gussets" by LionBrandYarn Good luck!

I cannot tell exactly where I'm going wrong when I'm following you after you pick up the 8 stitches because the camera doesn't zoom out to show progress. I used slightly smaller needles and yarn so when I pick up 8 stitches there is still space before I connect to the 10 at the stitch marker. Can you please help?
@iKNITS8 жыл бұрын
Chanea Grant hey I just want to make sure, are you following along with the written pattern?
@iKNITS8 жыл бұрын
Chanea Grant hmm there still shouldn't be space if you've been doing the same amount of stitches. I'm not sure why, maybe you're picking them up in the same stitch so I would pick up your stitches with bigger gaps in between, so there is 8 sts. dispersed evenly in that space. Does that help?
@alyssapeters98768 жыл бұрын
I'm so very lost with the heel. I've picked up the 8 stitches but now I don't know how you got to the next part with having stitches on all four needles. I've read the directions but I still don't understand. I really wish you would have recorded all of that part.
@iKNITS8 жыл бұрын
Alyssa Peters im sorry, sometimes it's hard to predict what people might need more help on. Because I showed you how to pick up the first 8 sts. The rest is knitting(which you should already know how to do) and then picking up 8 sts. again(which I already showed you how. And then try to disperse the sts. As evenly as you can. But if this helps, I've tried to explain it... Gusset and foot: so you knit 5, then you pick up 8 sts. (I don't think you have to knit them like I did in the video, just picking them up is fine), place a marker, then you're going to knit the next 10 stitches that are already in your needle, place a marker...then you pick up 8 sts. That's on the opposite side of the other 8 sts. Place a marker and you are back to the first 5 stitches. Now, because you have markers and you don't want them to fall off, I would put your 8 sts. You picked up, place marker, then 1 of your 10 sts. at the end of that needle(so the marker doesn't fall off) does that make sense?

I really had a hard time hearing you and it was very confusing knowing which way to lay the needles once the yarn is transferred. I've only ever knitted scarves and blankets so I'm presuming this video is more for advanced knitters, but it sure would have helped had you told which way the needles lay. My yarn from which to knit ended up at the back of the needle, not the front, when transferring to the other needle. It is a good video but I think I must need a video far easier and more explanatory. : ) Do you know of one?

hi ikniters! i am a fairly new knitter. i'm hoping someone can help me. i am really lost on the Gusset and foot. after pick up and k 8 sts for heel gusset, place plastic marker, k across 10 sts for instep, place plastic marker, pick up and k 8 sts for heel turning, place plastic. do i put the 8 on a new tool, and if so how do the markers stay on? Or am i still to use only the two tools?

I'm sorry to be such a pain lol. When you're done adding the eight stitches on both sides and you have 31 stitches, did you divide the stitches between three needles like in the beginning?
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
yes, and you're not a pain! :)
@Emily-lh1ml10 жыл бұрын
***** Haha thank you! How did you divide the stitches between the needles?
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
I just moved them to the other needle...is that your question?
@Emily-lh1ml10 жыл бұрын
I should have clarified better. I meant how many stitches did you put on each needle?
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
I don't remember, just divided them evenly.

Question! After rib knitting the cuff at the top for 8 rounds, it says to go to a stockinette stitch, but it says to knit every row. Why is it called a stockinette stitch then? I thought a stockinette stitch was k 1 row, p 1 row. Isn't knit every row just garter stitching? I'm curious as to why the pattern calls for a stockinette stitch when its just knitting each row without alternating to purl.
@iKNITS7 жыл бұрын
Karine Deschamps because it is different when you are knitting in the round, you are working on just the right side of the work so to make the stockinette stitch, you just knit. To make the stockinette stitch while knitting flat, you have to purl on the wrong side to get the stockinette stitch on the right side. Does that make sense?

iKNITS oh I see thanks so much!

So when you're decreasing, you knit 4 full rounds in stockinette and then do the decrease round for a total of 5 rounds?
@sjn91958 жыл бұрын
+Kirsten Albino thats what i'm wondering too
@iKNITS8 жыл бұрын
You decrease every 4th round so stockinette for 3 rounds, decrease round 4.

+iKNITS super thanks! that was the only bit that left me confused. i'll have a go at these next week

your directions at the end left me very confused, please post the directions from the pattern you were using. I love the picture of the finished sock and would love to make this item

Hey, I am sorry, it is kind of confusing because that's where you have to measure your foot to see how long you have to knit depending on your foot size. I have the link to the written pattern under the video in the description bar. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

Do you need to use chunky yarn or can a dk yarn be used for socks? I would like to try my hand a this video.
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
For this video, it calls for chunky yarn. There are lots of cute sock patterns with dk weight yarn though!

This is my first time attempting to knit socks so this question might be stupid. When I'm knitting two together and the second stitch is behind the stitch marker, what I'm doing is taking the stitch marker off the needle, knitting the stitches together and then putting the marker back on. Is this wrong?
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
That sounds perfect!

Ronah Moore you'll have to use the magic loop method.

Can you send me the magic loop method for this pattern??

I really want to knit these is it going to matter I have a size 6 foot?
@iKNITS10 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't, if you follow along with the written pattern, it tells you towards the end to measure where you need to stop for it to fit your foot. So it fits any size! How great it that?!
