Germans loved their cannons , put them on everything.... except where it was really needed for defense... what is that a 7.62mm gun? Why not a quad MG42? Or a 30mm ?
@growlanser56006 жыл бұрын
Jesse from Vegas! They did use 20mm cannons as defensive armament in bombers after it became clear the MG15 was inefficient. By 1941 most He-111 were equipped with a 20mm cannon in the nose. They also used 13mm MGs as well by 1942 in all their medium bombers.

The thing is that nobody had figured out aerial combat in 1940. If you ever fired a full auto MG with ~1200 rounds per minute, you also would think it would suffice. The Mk 108 30mm was introduced in june 1943, when the first US B-17 raids over germany already happened.

He 111s had 7.62 mm guns for defensive armament, some later had 20mm cannon in nose for attacking enemy fighters or ships
@TheIndia216 жыл бұрын
The 20mm Oerlikon carried in the nose of some German bombers from about 1941 was for anti-shipping work, mainly. Poor rate of fire for air-to-air work (despite use of two in late Bf109Es, till they could find something better). The MG15 was much better in that regard despite the less damaging round. Later, Heinkels had the twin MG81Z in beam positions and a 13mm in a powered upper turret, but the 7.92mm MG15 was still a decent defensive weapon and widely used, they damaged or shot down a lot of RAF fighters with it in the BoB, the air gunners being very well trained.

Beautiful design of the He-111 but poor design of the defensive weaponry and placement . Why didn't you use your front guns and only your rear and side guns?. I play Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe and find flying the B-17 really hard when 6 fighters are coming at you from all directions. I could but my gunners on auto fire but choose not to and risk all jumping between gunners. Got 21 missions on a B-17 before I was shit to pieces and exploded. This game I still play is on my Windows 98 machine. Kinda funny but the one that plays this 1992s Panzer General which i have won at least 3 times since 1996 when I bought it. Fun games.

Well, the Heinkel He 111 was designed to defend itself from PZL P.11c's, Dewoitine D.510's and Gloster Gladiators - not Morane MS.406's, Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires. By 1940, it was already obsolescent. If the war had started 2 years earlier, the He 111 (and Do 17) would have fared better. Have you played the predecessor to Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe - Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain? That was a great game back in 1989, although bombing accurately using the bombsight in the German level bombers was super difficult! Demo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2mvcmmgiM-Ff7s

did He-111 gunners ever shoot down any Spitfires or Hurricanes???? (in real life)
@TheIndia216 жыл бұрын
Yes they most certainly did, and damaged others. For example Peter Townsend of 85 Sqn (Hurricanes) was shot down by a gunner in a Do17Z during the battle, as recounted in his book 'Duel of Eagles' which IIRC also described the action from the standpoint of the gunner, who got back to base. Stephen Bungay in 'The Most Dangerous Enemy' covers this subject quite well IIRC, as do Alfred Price' books on the Battle.

German Luftwaffe bomber gunners scored some kills against allied fighters during ww2, but were still very vulnerable in attacks, fighters possess speed and maneuverability that bombers lack

Fabio Artos Cassone : If you kill the pilot, chances are the rest of the crew will bail out. But that’s true for any bomber with only 1 pilot, not only the Heinkel He 111. The He 111 was no more vulnerable in this regard than the Blenheim or the Hampden. The design of the glass cockpit was not a factor in this. So it’s not a design flaw.

When things counted - the Battle of Britain - our air force pilots had the highest kill ratio of any nationality. Any further questions? As for the Battle of Falaise, our soldiers knew we were being sold down the river and yet their sense of honour meant they fought anyway. Same at Arnhem, Cassino, Warsaw and Berlin.

PolakInHolland You mean like they did in 1939 when they made mincemeat of the Luftwaffe and Red air force? Oh wait Poland was crushed and Czechoslovakia handed itself over to the Germans without firing a bullet.
@PolakInHolland6 жыл бұрын
You mean like when Britain and France pretty much ignored their alliance obligations and let a small country fight with the two biggest armies in the world? What did you expect the outcome to be you fuckwit? Do you think the Poles had any illusions they would win alone? The way you sold the Czechs down the river was even more embarrassing. The fact the pilots, soldiers, sailors and codebreakers of both countries then went on to support the allied cause anyway for six years anyway with some astonishing contributions probably means you should keep quiet and be grateful.

PolakInHolland Sounds like you are making excuses. I recall that a country to the north of Poland with a population of around 3 million did a good enough job of fighting the Russians that they staved off invasion. Your contribution was a drop in the ocean. Your idea of resistance was murdering Jewish, German and Ukrainian civilians. I see from your username that you are a typical pole, likes to brag about how great Poland is but does not want to live there. Can't wait for Putin to finish with the Ukrainians so he can put your nation back in its place, the sewer.
