IL Trovatore 1953 LIVE Scala Maria Callas (D'amor sull'ali rose + Miserere)

El debut de la Divina en la Scala en este rol. El último año de la Giovanne Callas, con esa voz torrencial, potente, ágil y metálica; Diciembre de 1953. Una performance interesante, la misma calidad vocal que en Mexico, en íntegras condiciones casi (excepto algunos sobreagudos que habia realizado como arreglos), con arreglos interpretativos del estilo Callas los cuales la caracterizaran años posteriores (por ejemplo ver final de 'D'amor sull'ali rose).
El sonido esta mejorado, remasterizado a estéreo.

To her, singing isn't about showing off or fame... it's speaking to the human spirit, reflecting the emotions of the characters. He got Ghiringhelli to allow him to use his box, and during this aria, he heard someone sobbing behind him, although he thought he had Ghiringhelli's box alone to himself. When he looked behind him, he saw Schwarzkopf sitting with tears running down her face. She looked at him and said, "That woman is a miracle." It's on the second DVD of Callas Interviews on EMI.

Absolutely. I remember hearing her telling an interviewer that after her 1958 London Traviata certain critics remarked that she sounded "tired" in Act III. She said that she took that as a compliment because she had really struggled to find the "right voice" for the dying Violetta. And it was true, her voice changed from the exuberance of Act I to the most wonderfullly beautiful vulnerable and heartrending scene with Pere Germont in Act Ii to the broken dying Violetta in Act III, Sheer genius!

Queso D'amor sul' ali rose fa testo per qualità interpretativa, espressività, squillo, qualità delle mezze voce e pianissimi.... il fraseggio di Callas sempre trova nove orizzonti, insomma, straordinaria... tecnica superlativa, messa in voce, trilli, musicalità. Dal Miserere già non si parla perché e, credo, veramente, vocal e drammaticamente straordinario in tutta la gamma di colori e sfumature.

There is no doubt about the most powerfull dramatic voice. When we listen for the opera and try to go beyond the voice, seeking for the acting, Callas is unique. No Verdian soprano is better served than her. She is trully a committed artist.

When I listen to early Callas I feel she was somewhere else in the universe dropping by to give us this and then gone. I only saw her last concert and she had gone and a beautiful lady was on stage doing what she could.

I too only saw her on the last tour in Chicago. She had not gone, in my view, because what remained was her incredible ability to become a character. In five arias and a duet and dressed only a plain white gown with a red stole and no jewelry she became: 1] a Spanish royal lady-Ximene singing "Pleurez mex yeux"; 2] a French princess singing the first duet from DonCarlo; 3] a Sicilian peasant woman singing "Voi lo sapete"; 4] a great mythological musician singing "Che faro" from Orfeo ed Euridice; 5] a Spanish noble woman singing "O don fatale". She actually transformed before our eyes into each of these characters both physically and vocally even the with limited resources that remained to her. What she must have been when those resources were at their highest could only have been a miracle.

I hear everything about Leonora here. Her fragility, her despair, her confusion, her anger, her resoluteness. Everything. Callas was a truly a genius of tones. Every phrase and musical line is varied and dramatically emphasised to make an authentic vocal character.

So many wonderful things, it's hard to know where to start. Everyone knows the sad story of the vocal decline and it's little short of tragic. But what you are left with is miracles like this, which are all the more remarkable when you know what comes later. For me It's the combination of complete vocal control allied to breathtaking musical insight and a sovereign sense of the style. But there's something else as well. It's all used to show who this character and what she is facing. All those fleeting moments of hope, despair and everything in between. It's a kind of vocal hyper-realism. All at the service of Verdi's music and captured by the microphone. Simply remarkable.

leaving behind all the comentaries of vocal decline, etc, I think it is important to say that all artists should be considered from the viewpoint of their best, their peak, because only they achieved that! decline will come for all human beings... Joan Sutherland may have sung for longer,but nevertheless she should be juged for her beautifull singing during the late fifties and sixties... Callas is much more than all that...she "creates" voices for the rolles, and her insight is near miraculous.

From what l have read about callas, people think her dramatic weight loss caused her vocal problems. Im not sure how anyone could be expected to move on stage with grace when their weight is a huge problem and she was so uncomfortable being large. She had a huge voice and from these recordings people can still appreciate her beautiful voice.

I didn.t have tickets for La Scala so Ghiringhelli invited me in his private box. His box is on the side, almost on the stage. Maria was singing and I had this strange feeling to be on the stage and she, being in the audience. I didn't notice that there was a woman standing behind me. @Shahrdad I am not remotely surprised at either Visconti or Schwarzkopf reacting like that. My own reactions at the few live performances i attended were similar and I was in my teens then. In Traviata in 1958 at ROH by the end we were all sobbing, but in act II just before "Ah dite alla giovine" there was the most eerie silence. You could hear a pin drop. By the end of the aria we were all in tears. The voice was only half of it. The other half was how she used it and her supreme musicianship.

I've heard that argument about the loss of weight that weakened the voice. That really did not occur until late in her career, on recordings where the voice had become quite thin in the middle and a rather acrid color in the upper middle notes. I would say that like all great artists, her distinct temperament and the incredible value she placed on expression cost her voice more than any diet. When she was wafer thin she gave stunning performances (with huge sound) of Bolena, Medea, Norma.

Yes…in December 1953 she had lost the weight (lost 68 pounds) by the time of this performance. She sounds stunning and opulent in color and tone. The photos posted are 1952 or earlier.

Ric Antonella Banaudi con Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, Shirley Verret, Zubin Mehta, Decca 1990. Avevo ascoltato la sua "d'amor sull'ali rose" su FB ma non riesco più a rintracciarla. So che la Banaudi ha avuto una breve carriera dovuta a problemi di reflusso. Comunque dal cast è stato sicuramente un buon Trovatore.

+Έλενα Παπανικολάου Her recordings still outsell every other Opera Stars and her approach for stage and singing truth is copied from her to this day and forever will be copied. I always laugh out loud at the imbeciles who remark her voice was "Ugly". To listen to her Sonnambula alone is a tour of heaven given by GOD. I listened to her Liebestod recently and was in awe of her dramatic life in the interpretation, but really that was her bread and butter, interpretation....

Assolutamente vera e grande in ogni frase musicale! Lei non cantava solamente, lei era dentro alla musica! Un fenomeno che si è mostrato al mondo tramite la musica, tramite la tecnica e attraverso quelle singole note che molte altre cantanti hanno eseguito bene ma senza cuore, senza perdersi nella loro tessitura! Lei perdeva la sua identità e acquisiva l'identità musicale del personaggio che stava interpretando. Semplicemente magnifica!

Minute 6:18 a perfect, extremely precise trill with a full coverage of thick metallic, dramatic core...which other singer is able to pull that off??? OK, that alone is supernatural but on top of that she pulls off the entire trill in messa di voce! The woman was nuts!!!

Poor lifestyle choices has nothing to do with technique. Callas made bad decision but her technique was absolutely perfect, especially during her prime from 1947 to 1955.

Richard Bonynge said that the pre-diet Callas voice was "Colossal", and that it poured out of her the way Flagstad's did. When di Stefano first heard her, he said "She sings like a man," and others (I forget who) said that she sings like an orchestra. There must have been something about her voice that had people make such comments.

I just sent this link to one of my equally musically-obsessed friends with the title, Now I can die happily. What a privilege to be able to see/hear the great Callas. As a lirico spinto myself, I cut my weight in half, from 300 pounds to less than 150. Because I am fortunate to have good vocal technique, there has been no deterioration in my voice. When it's done as I did it with diet (Paleo) and daily workout, it is not easy. But, oh so worth it.

***** I knew Mr. Siepi, and we talked about Callas a fair bit, and he never said anything about the iodine shots. His son and I were were very good friends from college. However, Pia Meneghini writes about that incident. Her husband was Maria's personal physician. She wrote that Callas found Swiss doctors who injected iodine into her thyroid, and she could not put any weight back on, even though she knew she had gotten too thin. She also writes that Callas herself concocted the tapeworm story as a ruse. Kudos to you Marly for dropping the weight and getting healthier. As Renee Fleming said, dropping weight for a lighter voice singer isn't that much of a problem, but dropping weight for a heavy-voiced singer such as Callas or Voigt, especially if they use the weight for support, is definitely a big problem.

Marly Harris Didn't Siepi have the most luscious voice? And in the opera house, it was absolutely colossal. I remember hearing him in his later career, and when he went for the low notes, the audience just gasped. And he was such a kind, sweet, generous man, as was his wife. And a typical Italian, he didn't like it if I didn't eat enough at dinner. He used to say, "Mangia mangia. Eat more. I don't like cheap guests!" As you said, delicious memories.

There is a wonderful story that during this aria at one of these performances a woman's sobbing was heard in one of the boxes. It was Elizabeth Schwartzkopf unable to believe what she was hearing!

That story was told by the Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti in an interview back in the sixties. He had been invited to one of Callas's performances in Trovatore at La Scala. At the end of the aria Visconti heard a woman crying behind him. He turned around and realized the woman was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

Sutherland had beautiful trills, and Price had good trills as well, but I have to yet hear anyone go into and out of a trill with the seamlessness of Callas. The trills are part of the melody rather than an an appliquè put on top of the melody. And she even does a messa di voce on the final trill!

I have listened to Sutherland for almost 4 decades years, and I've even heard her live. She did indeed have a beautiful trill. What I am saying is that Callas was able to go in and out of trills in a slow legato piece such as "D'amor sul ali" or "Al dolce guidami" much more smoothly than Sutherland could, without ever breaking the legato or the flow of the line. Indeed, the trill remained a part of the line rather than an ornament or applique overlaid on the line. Callas also seemed to be able to vary the speed of the trills to fit the mood of the piece. In fast music filled with trills, such as the I Masnadieri cabaletta, Sutherland is untouchable, but in music such as this or Bolena, she has to yield to her predecessor. As Richard Dyer wrote about D'amor sul ali, "Callas articulates all of the trills, and she binds them into the line more expressively than anyone else; they are not an ornament but a form of intensification." I have also heard Callas trill in chest voice, as she did in Vespri, which I have not heard from Sutherland or anyone else, and I have also heard her do a messa di voce on a sustained trill, as she does at the end of the aria here, again something I don't recall hearing Sutherland do. I remember Richard Bonynge speaking about Callas at Covent Garden, and he said something to the effect that we'd be lucky to hear a Leonora like Callas's nowadays.

You should just tell these people to listen to the final bars of Ritorna Vincitor, first with Callas and afterwards with Tebaldi and also the great Zinka Milanov. For the others, the grupetto at the end of the aria is just an ornament that they just go over it and finish the aria. Only Callas, the one and only who never lets us down, understands what Verdi intended and sings the grupeto slowlly, with the most beautifull legato, shading every note, giving us the most fantastic sense of real conclusion to the aria. I think that is one of the best exemples of her true art!

You are absolutely right. She had the ability to create the complete character of whichever role she was singing and make it believable and alive using only her voice. Another fantastic example is Ophelie's mad scene from Ambroise Thomas's "Hamlet". Her voice expresses Ophelie's fragility and instability to perfection. It is a miracle of coloratura singing at its most expressive!

Maria Callas was stunningly beautiful as her Amazing voice and Her ability to express the emotions in every single note She was singing and -this is why She sung as She did ! She lived and expressed the characters emotions as singing and performing and Callas was deeply emotionally associated and attached to her characters roles - as was saying ...she give herself fully to each performance - it means ...emotionally - Opera is Drama and all about deep humans emotions and Maria was able to captured those deep emotions as nobody else - its was her deep sensitivity and her personal feelings and ofcourse Callas great talent !!! My Momm loved her and we were listen to Maria on TV but I love her voice and performances and can feel her singing now as Im mature and can feel Her amazing voice and the emotions in it - I have experienced strong energy current striking through out my legs and travelling up in my head !! And then heat in my body as the results. That how powerful and emotionally charged Maria Callas's voice was and still is recorded and thanks to God and people that did it :):):) For ever greatfull ...
