reading about it on the Wikipedia when scrapping the plane they had to bring in a wrecking ball cause of the solid structure. this thing didn't went out without a fight!

Video game cockpit/pilot point-of-view ... but a fantasy crash landing since the Flying Flapjack could takeoff or land at zero mph with a relatively slow front wind ... almost like a helicopter hence the large propellers that also countered drag due to wind turbulence at the short wing tips. The introduction of jet's resulted in scraping the Flying Flapjack after Charles L Zimmerman perfected it (despite issues with the complex transmission linking the propellers) even though it was a match for any jet plane at the time in addition to very short landing ability.

Farmer Bold So you're telling me this aircraft was designed to be incredibly fast for a propeller fighter, turn ludriculously quickly AND land on a dime? You must be a mad man ;)

Interesting form of braking. I wonder what that thing would do if it lost an engine?
@rpurdey8 жыл бұрын
John Hettish The transmission was designed to keep both rotors turning with an engine out very much like the MV-22 Osprey. The complexity of the transmission turned out to be the aircraft's downfall.

Thanks for clearing that up. You kept me from researching that aspect of the aircraft. :-) I guess it was sort of like the German Leopard tank, an engineers delight but too complex to maintain, especially in the field.

"In 1943 Mansyu undertook design of the Ki-98 single seat ground attack aircraft.Of twin-boom configuration, it was to be powered by a 2,200 hp turbosupercharged Mitsubishi Ha-221 Ru radial engine mounted in the central nacelle behind the pilots seat and driving a four-blade propeller. Nose mounted armament consisted of one 37mm and two 20mm cannon. A Prototype was still under construction when Japan surrendered." Rene J Francillon-Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War

i think it hast to do with vortexes building up at the wingtips but you could use modern turboprops
@Justanotherconsumer4 жыл бұрын
The propellers are key to how the design works. Ordinarily a low aspect ratio wing is a bad idea because air will escape up over the edge of the wing, cancelling lift. Having a big ass propeller pushing it back down negates that disadvantage. You’d never get supersonic speeds with a big ass propeller, but you can get very good low speed performance. Wouldn’t cut it as a fighter against jets, but for COIN operations it’d still be valuable even today.

now i kmow why this plane not used because it has no wing so the turning move are slow and the landing in the end almost make the pilot killed becuase this plane is to fast and too short it will make the landing arent sucsessfull like in the end of video
@FallenPhoenix867 жыл бұрын
Wrong on all counts, the entire body of this aircraft is an aerofoil.... the whole thing is a wing. With a light headwind the prototype could take of and land vertically. The way we saw it behave in game just shows that the ingame model's flight model needs a lot of work, it isn't remotely accurate.
@durathror49385 жыл бұрын
The XF5U was designed as a low aspect ratio aircraft/lifting body with STOL capability but high top speed. A low aspect ratio wing normally suffers from induced drag created at the wingtips, as the higher pressure air below spills up. The XF5U beat this problem by the position of its propellers. They rotated counter to the tip vortices, retained the higher-pressure air below the wing, and reduced drag. The XF5U's small wing gave it high manoeuverability with increased structural strength. Perhaps an experienced pilot could even have 'viffed' the aircraft in combat like a USMC Harrier jet, but hanging on the props V-22 style. Designer Charles H Zimmerman was very probably a genius!
