IL2 Sturmovik 1946 - Operation Bodenplatte: Virtual Reenactment 64 Years After the Real Mission

Disclaimer 1: this was not a directed film, this was a surprise attack made in an online open server, this is why some of the virtual pilots did not use:
a) Realistic tactics (some tried dive bombing).
b) Realistic paintings (some fly with their personal skin)
c) Realistic markings (some gamers that intend to fly simulators usually forgot to chose realistic markings on its planes).
Disclaimer 2: I know that many have only heard about Operation Bodenplatte in the Dogfight Series at the Discovery Channel, at the "Defense of Y-29" episode wich reviews the attack on only one airfield, but this whole operation made incursions in more than a dozen simultaneously .
Attending to historical recordings, the real results were diferent in every target, from total failure to great success, but in all cases with heavy losses, including friendly fire. This video tried to reflect that, heavy losses at all levels.
With all this in mind, now look the video as is... a videodebriefing of an internet open mission in an open server that loosely closes of what might have been the real Operation Bodenplatte. At least it was flown in a serious simulator.

der Auftrag für die zehn Jagdverbände, ein Schlachtgeschwader und zwei selbständige Jagdgruppen lautete an diesem Morgen: Angriff auf 27 alliierte Flugplätze in Belgien und Frankreich, dadurch sollten die britischen, kanadischen und amerikanischen Luftstreitkräfte in diesem Raum für die nächste Zeit ausgeschaltet werden.

I watched this video so many times when I was younger when I just getting into planes. I must have been like 7 or 8 when I found this. Finally, I found it again. Thank you so much, you have shaped me into who I am today. This video motivated me to play flight simulators and create youtube content. I thank you with all of my heart for making this video. The Luftwaffe put in the air about 850 fighter mix, the mission was secret and as a result 1/4 was shot down by their own AA batteries, the remainder attacked 17 allied airfields and at the end of the mission the Luftwaffe lost 1/3 of the total airborne strength. One very expensive operation for Germany. Yes, the allies suffered some losses which were made good within 48 hours while Germany could not neither replace the airplanes or the pilots.

From what I read the Luftwaffe's tactical gamble had some considerable success. But because of the colossal failure to achieve air superiority meant the allies could easily get a foothold in the air and get aircraft airborne and retliate. The Luftwaffe also lost terribly due to the fact that most of their pilots were complete novices out of flying school.

You have made a great movie The Bodenplatte technique worked well in the east (attacking after victories holidays ect ) but was not so successful in the west where the drink is not so strong A deal of damage was done but the Luftwaffe paid very dearly for it Losses they could not afford or replace

I think he said something about that earlier, the gist of it was that that thing was a dogfight, not a mission server, and a few people on that server didn't knew about what was happening. That's were some of the illfitting skins come from.

Sorry mate, but Dogfights is anything but a creditable source. It generally is not much of a documentary, there are a lot of "inaccuracies" concerning the american enemies. As Tuckie said bodenplatte had a lot of disasters but also some notable successes, in the overall it wasn't a success. There is the book start im Morgengrauen, which is unfortunately only availlable in german, which is a detailed look at 1944 and Bodenplatte, read it.

@zakyzeek depends on how much realism you want to have. even on lowest realism settings it is harder than a standard arcade game. but this game is meant to be played in full real settings and thats when it begins to shine!

According to Wikipedia, "most of the Luftwaffe attacks failed to achieve surprise... The Luftwaffe lost 143 pilots killed and missing, while 70 were captured and 21 wounded including three Geschwaderkommodore, five Gruppenkommandeure, and 14 Staffelkapitäne-the largest single-day loss for the Luftwaffe." The allies did not lose many pilots as the destroyed planes on the ground were pilotless.

apart from striking back for the hell of it and putting a lot of aircraft in the sky for one day for morale, what did the Germans expect Bodenplatte to accomplish? I've read 'the Last Chance" Mackie Steinhoff, but he gives this little attention.

I notice none of the FW190s are D-Doras.. they must have been around on NYD 1945..I guess only the A/F model FW was JABO-ised...maybe the higher altitude Doras would have been held back for Defence Reich and ME262 airfield cover duty...they might have been good for top cover of the strike force.

by the way the British aircraft from the base Y32 Never got into the air only the P47 and P51 got to take off, the battle started because the P47s where doing a patrol and and the p51s took off because they spotted flak bursts over Y32. the germans surrender weeks after the fail of bodenplatte (ground plate).

First I had to download both the (first) 4.08 patch & then the (second) 4.09 upgrade patch. Then download Hyperlobby. Just question Google about the patches & Hyperlobby & you'll find the downloads. This is for IL2 '46 only. If I can do it, a young wippersnapper like you can do it.

The Germans were intercepted before they could hit the airfield. Most were shot down. Look at Dogfights: The Legend of Y-29. It is about this. Good music though. And good editing.
