Excellent video, except the Liberators you show are the B24 J model, but in Operation Tidal Wave, all of the B24's were "D" models, which did not have the front gun turrets or lower ball turrets!

I love that the anti aircraft fire damage is heavily exagerratted. By the way, altough this film shows incredible amounts of damage to the refinery, in fact the refinerys production level decreased only by 2% because before the raid, the refinery was not at full capacity, so the germans just brought the unused portion back into service

Actually during the Polesti raid bombers had to fly at the tree level to avoid being tracked by a radar, as well for a proper accurate drop.

From the wiki article Operation Tidal Wave involved a total commitment of 178 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on a 2,400-mile round trip flight to conduct low-level attack on the refineries. All aircraft were based near Benghazi, Libya. The B-24Ds had their combat range increased with special 3100 gallon wing tanks. This info is in many books btw.

@NLFonsseals 1. He creates some 3d effects and adds them later tothe Il2 footage in a movie-editing-programm (Look the Video: Creating special effects) 2. This oilfield is made with Full Mission Builder for this only Mission (Film-scenery). You can see Objects like the V2rocket, Some Hangars, and islamic looking buildings, great compiled. Look for this objects in FMB and you will see. (I work often with those Objects, so I cognize them immediatly.

@Eboreg2 Actually, The Tidal wave operation was not so efficient. They restart bombing Ploiesti only after they took the airfields from South Italy. And after that, it was somethink else, becouse the romanian fighters were forced to fight in an inferiority of 1:10, sometimes 1:20 if we add the P51 Mustang and P38 Lightning. It was very hard to be a romanian fighter pilot in these days...

First bombers in formation had bombs with long delay time and the last had bombs exploded with short time delay - 45 seconds). 35 out of 162 had been shooted down and 110 pows have been captured. 7 B-24 out of 35 hit de cables of the protection baloons (filled with hidrogen). All of them exploded. The Wellcome cometee was performed by 89 german airplane fighters and 59 romanians. In Ploiesti the following oil rafinery were not affected: Unirea, Standard, Dacia Romana, Redeventa, Xenia.

You can fight on the western front!!! Just flight made an expansion called Battle over europe!!!You can only order it online. There are also dozens of downloadabel mods compleetly with skins, including the Africa front.There is even a mod for the Italian aircraft. Look into it. It makes Il2 so much better

@4my8kngck its a 10. its one of the best,if not the best,WW2 simulator. If you think about buying it,you should get IL-2:1946 with all previous versions and a new campaign along with some 300+ flyable aircraft,with 400+ total. People have also created mods to fly the unflyable planes

Did you do anything to add to the game? I've played this game and have never seen the human characters interact. Like the anti-aircraft gunners and the people inside the planes. Plus there are views and images i've never seen before....

it was and out of the 178 planes, 53 were lost and many were damaged and 310 Killed and some 200 captured and it was one of the biggest air raids and after that all raids on ploesti were made from high altitude.

The Ploesti raids're depicted as being a lot more effective than they really were. (Perhaps the Czech narration at the end spells out the ineffectiveness of the operation.) And where was the Romanian Air Force, darn it? Yes, I know the game may not have a model for the IAR.80, but I can always wish.

Roumania was not captured by the germans, they were allies. And the ME-109's belonged both Roumanian Air Forces and Luftwaffe

It's the result of real air strike. From 178 bombers only 11 returned to base (last after 16 hours in air). 54 was shot down over Romania, 3 over the sea, 7 forced land in Turkey, rest lost from different reasons (probably crashes, damages, aa guns, low fuel...). Air staff losses 532 men. Result: oil production reduced by 40 % for several months.

Ahhh youtube does not allow links posted in comments. Guys, google "Operation Tidal Wave" and you will get some very good pages including official USAF sites. Even the wiki article is a pretty good overview...and well sourced. These guys had to fly over the Pindus mountains and the intricate coordination was messed up which contributed to the heavy losses. Read up very interesting.
