I can't stop getting goosebumps when I listened to ARR pieces. ARR surely wasn't as consistent as Mr Raja when it comes to the background score. However, if you take the best of ARR works and try to find something as powerful then sadly there are no equivalent. In terms of consistency, Mr Raja wins.

@@hailpepNot all songs got western classical touch. In some, he is adding pure western notes to add richness especially in the Cello and String sessions. Some times on Key Flute, and Brass. Since he knew western classic, he used to add counter strings or string Stuccato etc. What I said is... He will not pick a song from Western and do in Tamil like others. Some western notations will be there. There are so-called "legends" picked tunes/songs and add Tamil lyrics according to. More over Raja Sir creating music for our movies which show cases our own culture, life. Everything he did will touch our heart, soul and will remain till our end. That is his composition. In his compositions all instruments give a great feel too. And moreover he knew which instrument is apt for each song.

IR's music is based on pure western classical. Bach, Moszartbetc. ARR mixes arabic, sufi which sounds good even for less musically inclined aka common man. If a proper musician listens to IR he will be amazed but common man still will enjoy it once he understands. Most important is that IR's music is pure analog and ORGANIC. Just comes out or flows out of him. ARR makes his music piece by piece and all the musicians play their part in the creation so its not organic but a collaboration. For e.x. rhythm is programmed by someone who is specialist like Ranjit Barrot and so on.

Don't compare AR Rahman with Ilayaraja. In 1991 Karthik starred in the background score of the film Vanakkam Vathiyare by A. Dilip Kumar. R Rahman was doing it. For the songs of that film Music composed by PR Sampath Selvam. In an interview, the story writer of the film, Vairamuthu Vanakkam Vathiyare, told the background music of AR Raghuman, who was Dilip Kumar on that day. He said that he did it. Roja was released on 15th August 1992. Before that, the background score of the film Valanom Vathiyare released in 1991 was not as good as it was by A. Dilip Kumar. It was done by R Raghuman. In 1992, the film Roja was released in digital sound system. The music of AR Raghuman's Roja was also released in the same periodThere was a sarcastic and funny video on youtube reel that Hindi movie songs are not digital quality like Roja movie and it is old vintage bollywood style. What kind of a person thinks a tune and write down notes without even playing it, on a piece of paper, for all musical instruments. He hears his composition the first time when it was played by the orchestra. He does this in a lightening speed too, like 30 mins for songs like Sundari kannal oru seidhi. It's just unfathomable..I can't imagine how his brain is wired to be able to do that. He's probably autistic with savant syndrome and has this ability to see music like visualize music like objects, which can't be done by us. Maybe he trained himself to do that because he said his favorite movie is Amadeus. It's a movie about Wolfgang Mozart's life. Where they show that Mozart has the ability to complete composition in his head completely and then write down the finished composition from his head. Maybe he saw that and trained himself from a young age. Who knows. But we know for sure that, in Kadalukku Mariyadhai, just like any other composition, he sat with his harmonium and placed his fingers on the keys (but never presses them) and thought and wrote down the songs for Kadhalukku Mariyadhai.. then it was rerecorded using digital. Most of the today's famous heros and directors owe their life to Ilayaraja and that includes, Rajinikanth, Ramarajan mohan, Karthik, Vijay, maniratnam, so on. He's a real musician who comes up with tunes in his head efficiently whereas AR Rahman records inputs from different sources, improvise and makes a cocktail that takes 4 months for a song.. The one other composer I can say that's somewhat good next to Ilayaraja is Vidyasagar. He's very good as well. Not as good as IR but good enough and his songs are very decent.
