I'm a HUGE fan of Ilford film and chemicals. I encourage all budding photographers to get into shooting Ilford film and to remember that negatives will still be around in 100 years time, while your jpegs will be unreadable. Please support this very British company.

Advanced tip: To make it easy to peel open the backing paper in the darkroom you should fold over the end tab before sticking the glued paper seal on to the roll. This will give you a little edge to pull on to open the film in total darkness. If you are developing your own or taking the film to a lab, you will want to use this trick.

Always make sure - especially on cheaper cameras like the Holga, Diana etc. - that the exposed film is wound tight and does not come over the "wheels" of the spool. Otherwise light will come onto the film and at least cause so called light leaks (washed out parts of the picture). In fact many photographers think their camera has light leaks when it is only their own fault as they are not winding the exposed film tightly enough. To wind your film tightly make sure, that the first rounds of backing paper are wound really tight onto the empty spool, when you insert the film. Hold the full spool while winding on the backing paper onto the empty spool. If already the beginning of the film is loose, then the rest cannot be tight! If your camera nevertheless will not wind your film tightly, then make sure to take out the film in absolute darkness (for instance in a camera bag covered with a jacket, when you are outside), and then wind it tight.

Hey I know this is a 2 years old comment but thank you! Had this problem with 1 negative (However it ended up looking pretty cool) and thought it was due to light leaks but this could be it! Cheers :)

Paradise a roll of 120 Delta 100, my Bronica ETRSi and looking for a Michael Kenna style shot (I know he shoots 6x6). It is a great advantage of a composite type camera is that you can load several backs at home. However, I rarely complete a roll on one outing which is strange as I can get about 30 digital shots in the same time. My 645 is about as much as I need as I haven’t got a 120 enlarger yet, I'm looking for a Durst 605(?) that can enlarge 35mm and 120. My printing at the moment is digital for this size film though I enlarge 35mm in the darkroom. (Using Ilford chemicals and paper of course).

I'm not 100% certain about the ETRS backs, but my ETRSi allows you to manually wind the film to 1 without needing to attach it to the camera first. It's pretty useful for having multiple backs ready to go, pre-wound to the first frame.

great video, but a couple of pointers, for the TLR Rolleiflex models have a WARNING here, you MUST not do as shown in this part of the video, you MUST go UNDER the first set of rollers!!!- this allows the camera to 'sense' the film and engage the film counter!!; with Hasselblads, there is a Film flatness bar which you must go under, the red window of the tlr section applies here (to the PLAIN 12-on back), the A-12 loads, and stops at frame 1 automatically; some cameras have darkslides, and 'magasines' be VERY carefull, as some do not allow the slide to be removed when OFF the camera body, hasselblad V series DO let you, so TAG, or add a string on the slide handle, to show there IS film inside, or put this into a bag, or elastic band around the mag. to stop accidental removal of the slide.

I have loaded ilford 120 400 asa film but the frame numbers do not seem to appear in the central red frame aperture. I have wound it right through the camera but no numbers have appeared. does anyone know why this might be?

Hi Ilford, I am an avid user of your film. I am wondering what keeps you from putting 220 films in the market? Since film photography is gaining ground once again, it would be good to have such an option as we used to have. There are times when frequently changing rolls in the field is inconvenient.

@@Ilfordphoto hi I have a similar problem with an old Agifold camera, it loads right to left and all the numbers are consequently upside down and I can’t see any of the numbers in my counter window?? What can I do? Do you make a film that would alleviate this problem? Thanks.
@Ilfordphoto3 жыл бұрын
@@FlemoZ It can be difficult in some cameras to read the frame numbers and for us it's a fine balance between getting them dark enough to be read by most with out going too dark so that it leaves an impression on the film.

At 5:09 you say to tuck under the end of the backing paper... then promptly seal the film WITHOUT tucking it under (or folding it under itself for a better description).

nice and informative video's, But your film processing videos DON'T cover this format of film, so would be nice if you could do one, as it's different to 35 mm and would be nice if we could load this into "our" tanks for developing this ourselves.

@Ilfordphoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. This is something we're aware of and is on our minds. At the moment there are a lot of affordable 2nd hand cameras available which is helping the market, but you are correct a new good quality film camera would be a huge asset.

@@Ilfordphoto yes it is an idea I have, the Cosina camera company made a camera that went under different names and could mount various brands of lenses. Like the Olympus om2000 camera and there was a Nikon version among others. This would be a way to reintroduce a film camera system. 📸
