Good into tank enemy team (Ornn Sejuani Nautilus for example) or close range teams who will fight on top of you

yes 100%. You'll see this happen a LOT in low ELO, where you have no meaningful damage to kill the spirit, but they see and hear the spirit taking damage and get spooked into giving you 3 free tentacles and decent poke. As an illaoi main, look to see if they have the damage to kill spirit before running out.
