My father lived to be 83 years old. He was a disabled veteran, sustaining a leg injury that caused a limp for 60 years and gave him terrible arthritis in his hips as he aged. He was 100% disabled, and had a triple bypass when he was in his late 50s. Not ONCE did he ever use a handicapped spot in his entire life, even though he deserved to use them. He said to leave them for the people who really needed them. To see obviously able bodied people use them is maddening.

He was always very active, playing golf and racquet ball. He had a pacemaker and also was fighting bladder cancer when he passed away. His doctor offered him a handicap tag but my dad refused! He had to much pride, he didn’t want to take a space that someone else may need. There isn’t any pride anymore, pride in doing the right thing, it’s sad.

First, dont assume people do not need handicapped placards because "they look fine". You don't know why they need a placard. Second, while in California the minimum fine for a handicapped parking violation is $275, after court fees it can be upwards of $500+. Think twice before parking in the white hashed area between two handicapped spots. Some fools think it's for motorcycles - it's not. It's to allow people with wheelchairs, walkers, etc., enough room to safely exit their cars with their mobility aids. Parking in this spot will get you TWO tickets because you are blocking two handicapped spaces and will get double the fines.

An important factor to remember is that being disabled isn’t just about being in a wheelchair or relying on an assist device. 6 years ago I had congestive heart failure and couldn’t walk from my car to my work building or to the grocery store from the parking lot without passing out so I had a handicap placard that I used until my heart transplant. Outwardly I looked fine but I was very weak and would become breathless just from walking 10 feet and I moved very slowly, so please don’t judge based on that alone.

So walking my leg(s) get weak, be in pain and I would have a hard time walking then. In Florida, the handicap placard has the drivers license number of the person it was assigned to. I've seen in another state they have to picture of the person on the placard. That would be great if every state did this. When ever I see a person parked in a handicap spot and no handicap placard or license plate I usually call the police. This video is spot on, I see people doing this all the time.

One man in the video said a lot of the people parking in handicap spaces don’t have anything wrong with them. My husband has a handicap plate on his car, and a hangtag for when he is in my car. He gets a lot of dirty looks from people, when he parks in a handicap space. His injury and medical condition isn’t visibly obvious, but is real nonetheless. Just by looking at what someone looks like, or how they walk, you can’t tell whether or not they have a medical condition, which necessitates them to have to use handicap parking spaces. I agree there are a lot of people who misuse the handicap spaces. My point is you can’t just tell by looking at someone to know whether or not they are legitimately handicap.

They came back out before the truck arrived, and were freaking-out when I told them it was on the way. They begged me to move my car to let them leave, to which I obliged. She freaked out as I told her that she is probably the type of person who stands in a parking spot to save it for her husband. When she slapped me that was the last straw and I had her arrested!

The thing is, not all disabilities are visible. My husband has heart problems and anyone seeing him get out of a car would not think him handicapped because his problem is not visible. That one man said he has seen people who don't LOOK handicapped parking in a spot. Don't judge until you know the facts.

Money is NOTHING without class, and class is all about having manners. If a handicapped person needs a spot taken by someone who doesn't have a placard or special license plate, they can report that vehicle and very well should. I was with a friend who needs a placard and, for the first time, came across people who are bigoted against the handicapped. I was so shocked that anyone could be so callous and cruel.

Not every disability is visible. I’m 34. I had both my hips replaced 2 years ago. I still have bad days and I do have a placard. I’ve been cussed out and stopped by police. Just bcuz I don’t always have my cane doesn’t mean I’m not having serious problems walking or moving. People need to stop judging others just bcuz of what they look like.

My late wife had a handicap license plate on her minivan. When she died I went to DMV to have the ownership of the vehicle transferred to me. At the same time I turned in the plate for a standard license plate. That way I wouldn't even be tempted to abuse the privilege. I see frequently stories of persons who habitually use handicap parking unlawfully and complain when they can't find a handicap parking spot to steal. Authorities should stop fining people for this and just have the vehicle towed instead. The fine is never as expensive as a tow fee and storage charge.

My wife has a disabled permit. I can't use it unless she's in the car, and I'm the one who looks like he needs it when we get out of the car. Well I hope that Mr. GQ gets whats coming to him, maybe if some day he or a family member needs disabled parking and someone has his douche bag attitude and uses the space. Here in Washington State I know that the the fine is $400+. Hey Cali, try upping the fine!

Just because someone gets out of their car & walks into the store doesn't mean they're not disabled. So many ignorant people don't understand the qualifications to get a disability placard, and many people have disabilities that fluctuate from day to day- where they can walk some days & other days they can't (it doesn't mean they can walk extended distances). Not saying lots of people who shouldn't park in the disabled spots don't - what Im pointing out is that people who are actually disabled people with placards get harassed for parking in those spots because too many people are uneducated about disabilities & think their allowed to harass people.

They don't care about that. They don't care about anyone but themselves. I wish that they would seize the vehicles and sell them at auction after a second offense. Also suspend their license. That would get their attention.

This is why legal fines really ought to be based on a persons income in the same way that taxes are. An $80 fine only disincentives someone who would be considered lower income, but someone like that rich asshole couldn't care less, he could rack up a dozen $80 fines like that in a day and not even notice. If you make over a certain amount of money, $100-150K (idk, i'm not sure what qualifies as "rich" in that area) the fine should increase to $800, or even more if you are a higher income bracket.

Increase the fines, or do as they did in one EU country. Base the fine on your net worth. In the article I had read, a 20 over speeding violation ended up costing an electronics company's CEO $160,000 US dollars because they felt an $80.00 fine would have meant nothing to him. Alternatively, put their car in jail. Impound the car for 2 days for a first offense, second offense might mean 2 weeks (with all the daily fees as well)

As an ADA monitor (with the authority to issue a warning ticket) having worked in the disability field since 1986 I think that folks should be fined, cuffed, car towed and spend one week in jail no matter who they are or how old they are. Elderly folks are notorious for parking on the white lines, blocking the HP ramp off of the sidewalk. I was verbally assaulted by someone who parked in front of, blocking access to an HP spot at the back door to my building 2 days ago. It was all captured on security camera footage and I am filing a police report and pressing charges. People are lazy and feel entitled to park anywhere they want. Stop harassing people with permits who have "hidden" disabilities, heart trouble, asthma, a prosthetic leg, cancer, etc etc etc., too.

We used to frequent a bar/restaurant near work, there was a couple that came in often and would just order coffee and drink it all night since refills were free. This same couple parked in the handicap spot, there was only two spots, and of course they were young and able bodied. A guy in a wheelchair who also frequented the place showed up the same night and when he saw their car in the handicap spot he parked his van behind them and even though they wanted to leave he made them wait till he was ready to go.

Even though the one handicapped guy had a point about seeing people parking and just walking away. Not all handicaps are visible and there are different standards of disability in different areas. You can still walk and be handicapped, you may not be able to walk far but far enough for a scooter that some stores provide. There is no excuse however for these type of people who use them for convenience or that think the signs don't apply to them. It should come with demerits where it affects your license or insurance rate.

The customer stated that he was going to park in a handicapped spot and a guy in a white pickup flew into the spot in front of him and when told that the other customer needed the spot he laughed. I went outside and found a white pickup with out of state tags. Not much I could do but I looked around and saw a State Trooper further out in his squad. I told the trooper what was going on and he drove over to the pickup and ran the tags. He looked up with a grin and told myself and the customer to stick around. When the douche bag came out he was arrested for prior warrants and the vehicle towed, along with the $250.00 ticket for the handicapped parking violation. That was a good day!

Agree, there are A LOT of "Entitled attitude" people, who actually believe their above everyone else and law enforcement can't hold them accountable!! I have been confined to the use of a wheelchair, for mobility, since 2018. I usually wait in the car while my family member runs inside the store(s). You would be surprised at the things I witness, from all ages/ethnicity. SHAMEFUL behavior. Speaking of Walmart: people inappropriately parking in the assigned "pick up groceries" spots. Why? Your going inside and these spots are not close to the entrance. My idea/solution: My opinion, there should be tire spikes, from underneath the parking spot. They stay up until the driver arrives (preventing non authorized people from parking), then when you enter the parking spot number the spikes go down. Finally when you leave the spot, the spikes automatically go back up from a hidden sensor. I believe some flat tires, expensive replacements, and/or towing costs (that could be higher than a "fine"), might make People rethink before parking inappropriately!? Wal-Mart can then post clearly written visible "warning signs". So frustrating. 😵
