A friend of mine, with a handicapped plate on his motorcycle, got called out because someone thought if you're handicapped you can't ride a motorcycle. He has cystic fibrosis and had a lung transplant that was failing. He could not walk far, even though he could ride his motorcycle. You can't always see a handicap and it doesn't mean you can't walk or ride, it means you have a medical issue that requires you to park close. He had to carry oxygen and take many rests when walking. However, not all disabilities are visible. Just because someone can walk from their car to inside the store with no mobility aid does not mean that they are not disabled. I had a sister who had COPD and could walk, but not for long distances without stopping to take a rest. Unless she wore her nasal cannula for oxygen, then an outsider would never know just by looking at her. Many times, she didn't wear her nasal cannula in public, and would use it inside her car before entering the store, and after returning. She had a handicap placard, too. A person wearing a prosthesis could look like an average able person, especially if their clothing is covering up the prosthesis. So, don't judge someone parking in a handicap space with a handicap placard who appears able to actually be able. There are many hidden disabilities. However, the absolutely able people parking in handicap spaces, go after them with heavy fines.

As a person in a wheel chair, I understand this frustration. One thing though, about the news report... you do not have to "appear" disabled to be disabled.... it kind of implied, that if you can walk, don't use a disabled space. I wish there was a better way than the placards... because those are often misused by family members, and then they are taken away... so the person that really needs it, has now lost it because Jr. couldn't walk across the parking lot.

Good video, the US is not alone with this disease of thinking that some people assume they are more entitled to park in a space them someone in need. I live in the UK but it's just as bad here. The worst places I see are those at supermarkets as the companies take zero responsibility for checking if a car has a blue badge and do nothing about it, even if reported! So, it just goes on and on and on! The lazy, the arrogant and the ill only be two min excuses are always willing to take a space they do not deserve. I would like to see in the UK all Disabled Bays come with a warning sign for illegal parking without a valid blue badge, I would like to see a fine of £250 for the first time but with the power to seize the car for serial offenders. In the UK the police have the power to seize the car for no insurance, so, it would just take an amendment in the law to make that possible. And I want the Government to pass laws on Supermarkets to make them legally liable for allowing illegal parking in disabled bays in their car parks. I am sure similar aspects could be done in the US! If you have not disabled sod off out of that space! I am fortunate that for now I can still walk and travel by bus, I do have a blue badge but yet have to rely on others to drive, when I do, I need that space as travelling by car increases the level of pain in my legs. I also am aware that I can be heading for a wheelchair so I know I would need those spaces more. I do not care what excuses people use for parking in disabled bays, they are quick enough to take the space, would they be quick to want to have the conditions that go with the need for that space! Nobody has any right to use a disabled bay except those with disabilities, that is the reality and it's time those so bloody lazy learned to respect that!
