Illegal street vending program sparks concern in San Bernardino County

Street vendors are protesting against San Bernardino County leaders over their efforts to target illegal street food operations. On Tuesday, a rally was held outside the Covington Chambers as the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a $9.8 billion budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Within the budget proposal are provisions that specifically focus on illegal street food vendors that opponents believe could open up possibilities to harm those who depend on street vending to earn a living and survive.

Business owners in San Bernardino are suffering too but it’s not because of the street vendors it’s the homeless encampments that the city gets money for. They need to get rid of the encampments in front of the restaurants. Some restaurants make more money by having a food truck because their restaurants are not doing as good.

I don’t understand why US citizens have to pay taxes, utilities, permits, and other overhead costs and yet illegal street vendors don’t. At the corner of Artesia and Inglewood in Redondo Beach you have two florist across the street from each other paying rent, utilities, taxes, and other costs. Then 1 mile south on the street in Torrance you have a Mexican guy with a pop up tent selling flowers with zero overhead and screwing up traffic every day. They come to your window when stopped at the traffic light. How is that fair? The street vendor if you give him a $20 for $10 bouquet he pretends like he can’t find a $10 or $5 then he tells you just go because the light changed. So scamming people. I saw this when I was a passenger and my friend bought a bouquet. She made an illegal turn to get to parking to get her change. My other friend has a coffee shop and required to have sinks and bathrooms up to code. Food preserved at the correct temperature and stored properly at night. He had to buy a new sink at over $3,000. The street vendors have no such requirements.

That Mexican on the street is still paying for rent wherever he’s staying which is also taxed, paying taxes on his utilities at home, paying taxes on the gas for his travel and paying tax on the food he buys for him and his family. Some/most illegal vendors don’t want to get a permit! Yes, the county should cut some of the red tape to get a permit! I didn’t say lower the standards for health and safety codes. But, all vendors should get a permit, and if they don’t have a permit, they get shut down! Cities should also charge vendors a fee for setting up! $3000 a year payable quarterly is a good start!

That time when 3/4 of SB county residents voted to cap the supervisors salary to 60K because of their over inflated salaries of 400K and they overturned it because of cost of living. When the average income for those residents is well below the poverty line, but sure let’s go after street vendors and somehow blame immigrants for the state of the county.
