The train you rode was pulled by a “Shay” type steam locomotive. Fascinating to watch with driveshaft and vertical cylinders all on one side, but they are very slow. They were used in logging and mining operations and can maintain the same speeds over steep grades and rough uneven track, but at the trade off of speed. They top out at around 15mph, hence why it was slow. The commuter cars it was pulling would’ve been pulled by a much faster locomotive back in the day. IRM has a second operating steam locomotive, the Frisco 1630. That’s a more “normal” steam engine wide traditional side rods, like what most people are used to seeing and can go faster, up to around 35mph. In 2020 it was out of service for maintenance but returned in 2021. Some of the steam locomotives IRM has could’ve done up to 90mph back in the day, but none of those are restored to operating condition.

I went there today. We get to see every single locomotive they had in store and even drove one and it was my first time ever going to a railway museum and riding an actual steam locomotive and I hope I can go there again soon.

I’ve been there 5 times! I have been on the Frisco steam engine there and the zephyr. It’s always a good place for rail fans like my self, highly recommend going there

The have the second largest collection of steam locomotives, 27 of them. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy became the Burlington-Northern-Santa Fe Railroad.
