Lucky doesn't even begin to describe how fortunate this guy was. He was facing Southbound on I-39 near Monroe Center where that tornado crossed. I lived in the area and rode a motorcycle out to Rochelle where the Grubsteakers diner got flattened. You could see the swirls the tornado left in the freshly ploughed field behind the diner and they were about 200-250 yards across. When I drove up I-39, there was about 1/2 inch of mud and clay covering everything including the pavement where the guy was looking. What you can't see is the several hundred feet of barbed-wire and fenceposts marking the border between the Interstate and the farm fields. Every fencepost, and the barbed-wire it was attached to, was sheared off at the ground. So swirling within the twister were over a dozen wooden fenceposts and a mess of barbed- wire. That monster was a meat grinder.

No kidding! Even for many years following, I was still able to see all the debris tangled up in the fencing when I'd make trips out to Des Moines. I lived out in Durand at the time so I wasn't near this tornado when it had blown through but now I'm living just south of the airport and I'm pretty much right off of Baxter RD and I-39. I often think about just how close I am to the path that this tornado took and find myself a bit anxious about the "what ifs"! Hopefully we won't be seeing any tornadoes like this again for a good long while! Glad we've been fairly lucky so far!

I lived in Rochelle and graduated from Rochelle TWP Highschool in 2006. My hs sweetheart lived there most of his life. I traveled 39 many times and know EXACTLY where this is too. I moved well before this storm hit, but I traveled out that way myself a couple days after. I went past Grubstakers too as I also traveled that part of 251 often back in the day. It was wild to see the actual path. I also checked in on several friends I still have out that way. I was no longer a resident of the area, but man it still hit home for me.

***** well, actually no. overpass are built really well, it'll take more then just wind to make them collapse. the reason why it's dangerous is because how the overpasses are designed, the wind goes over and below the overpass, but when it does that it compresses the wind increasing the wind speeds, so to put it in perspective, a tornado can have EF3 winds, but in that circumstance it could have winds up to an EF4 going under the overpass. so something like a pebble could easily turn into a bullet

+caster4life They say that because, most of the time, people don't have a good idea where the tornado is and therefore its best to find a good shelter. In this case you stand just as much of a chance of running into a haircore, RFD, or the tornado as you do avoiding it. Here the tornado was clearly visible. The general direction of the tornado was fairly obvious (i.e. toward the viewer). As long as the car can go fast and the driver is reasonably competent at higher speeds (80+mph going straight on wet roads), he/she must choose between a moderate risk of injury (gunning it) or a high risk of death (sitting in the path of the tornado). Hindsight 20/20.

One of the best videos of a tornado ever. You took a big risk filming this tornado as it was coming towards your vehicle. Why did you not try to get out of the way of this tornado as much as you can?

IT’S HUGELY LOUD!!! But nah, for real this is top ten shots of any tornado caught on camera, and it’s also crazy that this same tornado was the one with the other video where the guy was on the second floor of his house and lived

I love the way he calmly acts like there’s some mild wind storm coming through and not an F4 behemoth barreling towards him at an alarming rate. I would have been screaming like a little girl and had bodily fluids projectile spraying out of every orifice of my body

After looking at the path of the tornado, this is probably filmed on highway 39 underneath the overpass of E Ivy Road. The Tornado crosses the highway near that intersection just south of a large creek and goes through a wooded area you can see out of the driver’s side window at the end of the video. The Tornado then travels Northeast and through Fairdale, where the Clem Schultz video was filmed. It’s likely that Clem began filming the Tornado’s approach to his home just seconds after this video’s conclusion.

That was like one of those bad horror movie moments where the person just refuses to get away from the monster. Instead sits there and screams or like this dude sit there and do nothing while saying "wow this is crazy um so crazy" while his perfectly running vehicle sits and says dude drive me the fuck away. Thats some good weed and poor truck😔
@storm12weather7 жыл бұрын
So lucky it missed him by a few hundred meters. This tornado produced EF-4 damage close to this location. Had it hit him directly, the survey team would have found the remains of his mangled truck in a field 1/4 mile away.

Getting under a bridge increases wind speed. When you push wind through a narrow opening it speeds up.

Too risky to drive away since you cannot out drive a Tornado unless it shifts into a different direction or you get lucky and get a path to live
@JamesBrown4ever18 жыл бұрын
7LeWhale You can totally outrun a tornado in a car. I know this for a fact because I've done it myself. Also, stormchasers would not take the risk of getting near one if it was not possible to outrun one.

You are a very lucky man. Are you serious....you don't know what to do? Get away from it!!!! How hard would it have been to turn around or race forward???? Either direction and you would not have been so close to losing your life. The tornado may have high winds within in it but they typically only travel approx 35 mph across the land.....you could have gotten away easily. Fortunate man....you should praise God you are still alive!
