Duke Evans filmed six and a half minutes of the 1991 Wichita/Andover tornado as it crossed into Butler County and did major damage in Andover. I read about this tornado and a story about a boy who was killed and it changed my view on them. I decided to study and confront my fears and thought what can be done to prevent deaths in these storms. Meteorology became my passion and still is.

Not exactly, in 1974, a high school student filmed the Xenia Ohio tornado on a super 8 camera, from that film Dr Fijita (the Fijita tornado rating scale) was able to analyze the severity and multi vorties/funnels and the ground damages....yada yada)

Indeed. I remember that day, because of the footage on Headline News, from about 4:16, with the maxed out wedge and the houses in the foreground, with house debris in the background. Low precipitation, lateral vortices, high contrast make it a truly iconic tornado in a time when amateur videography was coming into its heyday, and making events like this commonplace on the news.

The 1991 Andover tornado was at its highest intensity an F5 tornado. It was 600 feet wide, with the tornado being on the ground for 46 miles and wreaking havoc over Kansas for just over 60 minutes. Sadly 17 people were killed. The tornado crossed over the McConnell Air Force Base and just missed a row of B-1 USAF bombers costing about $400 million for each jet. There were about 25 B-1 bombers at the McConnell AFB at that time. The tornado passed over the west side of the airbase and just missed the hangars and line of B-1 bombers. The rest of the airbase was hit hard to the tune of about $60 million dollars.

Those were the days before digital zoom so when you zoomed in it wasn't all pixelated like it is now. With optical zoom you get a clear magnified view showing all the detail.

1991. I had one of those 12 pack of cans size black box cameras with the flip up and down black and white view finder screen that you didn't have to put your eye to and it held a full size VHS tape that you had quick zoom in and out buttons by the record button. It was like a VCR. You could watch footage recorded in the view finder. I wish I still had one of those monster cameras. You felt like you worked for the news with it on your shoulder. Ha

A lot of people talk about Moore or Joplin, but I'll always remember this and Jarrell as being some of the original monster tornadoes. I can still remember the footage they showed from the toll booth of this thing on the weather channel back in the day and it's always been an iconic tornado. This footage is incredible.

@@tomfisher9089 You do realize that Evans was over a mile away from the tornado and was never in its path, right? He was, actually, relatively safe all things considered. In addition, he was a retired Army meteorologist and was able to judge his safety according to rotation/direction of the storm and made sure he was no more than 30 seconds from his basement in the unlikely case that the tornado did turn towards him. Take your uneducated trolling somewhere else.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 30 years since that tornado. My sister and her family live in Wichita and their oldest daughter was visiting a friend in Andover earlier that day. Their house was destroyed. I visited Andover with my folks about a week after the tornado and was astounded by the destruction. A car was wrapped around a stripped tree like aluminum foil. One house was completely removed from its foundation but the flowers in the front flower bed were blooming and completely intact. A convenience store that I had visited exactly one year before the tornado was blown away.

To give some distance perspective on an amazing video: Evans filmed from the Terradyne CC. The five houses you see in the later half of the video are on Glendevon Drive, and are about 0.3 miles from Evans shooting point. The tornado would be entering the Golden Spur mobile home park about the time the tornado is behind the 4th house from the right (4:38 on the video), which would put it about 1.1 miles from Evans (the damage path is clearly seen on the Google Earth historical 1991 aerial). So even though it looks like it is right behind the houses, it is roughly twice as far from the houses as Evans was.

This is an extraordinarily beautiful recording of an exquisite wedge tornado. I was transfixed by its fierce beauty. Once, when I was 10 years old living in Excelsior, MN during the summer of 1965, I saw a very similar wedge. This brought the wonder and amazement of that sighting back for me. Thankyou. If you do some research the summer of 1965 brought a slew of very powerful twisters to Minnesota.

An EF0 can look beautiful, an EF5 can look beautiful, but both have the potential to be dangerous. It's an interesting thought that just because something like a cloud looks soft doesn't mean it isn't safe - think water: yeah, it seems like a soft thing to land on, but if you're traveling 100 mph down into water it might not be such a soft landing. Actually that tornado really did happen on a Friday. The TV weather people were warning people all week to lookout for bad storms that Friday. It's kind of amazing how far in advance they knew that the conditions would be just right for big tornadoes. I remember it well because the Andover tornado passed by within a few hundred feet of me.

The hail we got in Wichita that day was unreal. After the tornado warning passed and we left the basement, the roads were completely white with splashes of green from hail mixed with chunks of fallen leaves and branches and a thick, eerie steam rising up from it.

I worked for State Farm and was sent from Michigan to Hutchison in June of 1992 to handle auto hail claims from earlier that month. While I was there, two huge hail storms hit Wichita the same day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. I ended-up staying an extra week or two in Wichita and we had a huge drive through claims operation in an old car dealership. We totaled-out 70% of the cars. The hail was massive. I remember people talking about the Andover tornado too. Many people I met and had claims with were from Andover and many had lost everything in the tornado. They were quite traumatized.

To me the scariest tornado I ever saw on KZbin and on live tv was the El Reno Tornado. I was a big fan of Tim Samaras and loved watching his shows on the Weather Channel. When I learned he died and his son, it truly surprised me and shook me to the core. He was always about safety. El Reno Tornado to me was the one big anomaly of tornadoes of all time.

@@norshstephens2395 I get that. I was thirty in 1991, and my siblings and I had just bought our parents their first camcorder the previous Christmas. I know what most video of the era looked like. All I said was that this one has remarkable clarity, and for all I know, perhaps it was an early digital camera. I don't know what year they became available to the general public, but if they were actually available, they were most definitely the exception rather than the norm. Analog VCR/camcorder technology isn't generally this clear. Not sure why my innocent and positive comment had you coming so unglued, so, hopefully this explanation will lower your blood pressure a bit.

Mostly thanks to a HUGE, ENORMOUS, GIGANTIC leap in video technology, not to mention the competitiveness between storm chasers that gets them so close to -- and sometimes inside of -- a funnel cloud, today's storm chaser footage is light years beyond this. Notice I didn't say anything about today's storm chasers being "smarter."

My God that is one of the most violent tornadoes I’ve ever seen! That thing is as dangerous as tornadoes come. This video is also as close to a tornado as I would ever want to be, especially a violent tornado. The hail at the end of this video almost seems like a blessing compared to that close call!

I remember this. It was a few weeks before my tenth birthday. I was living in Tallgrass at that time. There were so many tornadoes on the news during that week. I too remember how impressed everyone in my family with the quality of that video.

This was right after it sliced its way through McConnell AFB. Hard to believe this was the fourth F5 of the 1990's at the time after we went the final half of the 1980's without one. The last F5 in the 80's was Niles, Ohio-Wheatland, Pennsylvania on 5/31/1985. Three of the next four F5's hit in Kansas: Both the Hesston and Goessel events on 3/13/1990, and Andover on 4/26/1991 with the other F5 being the infamous Plainfield, Illinois event on 8/28/1990. I was 6 months and 2 days old when this beast hit. After this, the next tornado to be rated 5 in Kansas wouldn't happen for another 16 years, 8 days when the first EF5 hit Greensburg on 5/4/2007.

Went to his house day or two later and his home was spared but most of the neighborhood was gone. dead fish filled the lake and there was even a dead horse in a swimming pool. crazy. I remember seeing the storm build all day. I was coming back from field trip to Abeline to Eisenhower museum, when we got back to the school at a little after 5 the sirens started going off. bad storm.

DAMN, that is superior footage. It is clear enough that I could see the vortices at the leading edge rotating clockwise while they were circling the main funnel counterclockwise. The trees and cars that it ejected out the trailing edge of the vortex shows how much power a tornado has. When the hail started-thankfully briefly-I thought the tornado was changing directions.I live in Tornado Alley and have been in several hail cores from tornados, but haven't been hit. The hail core usually has winds of 60-70 mph driving the hail almost horizontally.
