For those having an issue with the parts hiding behind the white "Layer", make sure when you select all the lines, that you select the box you made also. THEN you use the "Divide" button.

If anyone has issue regarding the outer shape not being in proper effect try making the box object before all of the drawings and follow the steps it should work.

@@umamochilaeumsonhoo Hey Nata, now I see whats up. I say control-B, it's paste in the back. However, now using Illustrator CC this doesn't work for me anymore. But it's easy to fix, right click on the smallest shape in the middle and arrange, send to back. That should do it.

I had to go to Pathfinder and Divide to make them into cutout shapes so that the smaller shapes would still be visible when sent back. This worked for the effect but I couldn't find a way to do it that didn't also leave a shadow on the white base

When I divide and ungroup it pairs 2 lines as a group. was making it into compound paths I had to divide like 3 times, and alos like most the last drop shadow is an issue. is the white a background a shape I don't understand how it reverts onto the last shape to be honest.

I may be releasing a simplified paper cutout tutorial that might help with that. I'd suggest looking through your layers and moving the layers around until you get the desired effect.

Hey Noemi, sorry that I wasn't clear enough. Could you specify, exactly which inner shadow are you referring to? So after applying the dropshadow, I move the layer to the back with ctrl-B and reverse the order. I'm wondering, did you divide your shape (01:32)?

I think he forgot to tell that first you need to draw a rectangle with no stroke and no fill. You should select it together with the other paths and select "divide" and so on the other steps of the tutorial.

Do you mean the shadow off the artboard? If so, then draw a rectangle over the entire artboard when you're done, then select everything including this new rectangle and right click and make clipping mask.

Start again, but when you choose the lines @ 1:33 , make sure you also choose the Box you created @ 0:08. It took me a few times to figure that out. Choose ALL the lines AND the box before you press "Divide".

I don't have a written tutorial, but you can set the speed of the tutorial to 0.5x in the bottom right hand corner of the video. That might help.

Open the layers and select the layer you want and drag it to where it needs to go. So in this case, we want the darkest layer to be at the bottom of the layers so we drag it until it's the lowest of the layers in the tab. Then we do the same for each layer.

Do you mean a shadow on the lightest layer on top (onto/off your artboard)? If so, you can draw a rectangle over top of the cutout + light area and select everything, including the box and make clipping mask. Then you won't see the drop shadow off your artboard.

You have to press I, click on your box with a colour, then hold alt and click on the shape that you want to color.

When you're using the pencil tool and you approach your initial point you'll see the icon change from a pencil with * to a pencil with °. If you let go of the pencil tool when the icon has changed, the shape will close. Otherwise you can either select the shape and press control/command J, which will join both end points with a straight line.

@@IlliTutorials This doesn't work. My Pencil Tool cursor doesn't change when approaching the original point. If I let go of the mouse button or stylus, it just leaves a gap. Also, using CTRL/J creates a straight line when joining the two open points. Possibly a setting in the Pencil Tool options?

@@iraceruk Hi I Racer, if you double click to the pencil tool there is a setting called close paths when ends are within: XX pixels. Check that box. My setting is 15 pixels. That should do it for you!
