A whole new world to me. Not good/bad. I wouldn't choose it, but... It's fascinating in terms of it being considered as a movement. What do they do with all the equipment? It looks expensive almost elitist. Is it associated with drugs.

It's not very - basically, you have a guy who owns a big field in the middle of nowhere, another who has friends in music willing to try to meet a public, and a public wanting to meet and dance. There is drug like there is alcohol, but it's not the purpose of a rave.

They're just parties held away from commercial nightclubs. So they can be held without restrictions on hours, without a dress code and with a specific music policy. The PA systems can be very expensive but they can be bought second hand or self made or just hired for the night. And yes it was associated with a drug: Ecstasy (MDMA) which had become widely available in the late 80's and is inextricably linked with the club/rave scene.
