Sub Berlin - The Story of Tresor (Documentary)

Dimitri's 2023 cut of the classic documentary from 2012 in memory of Regina Baer.
"Regina would have been 57 years old today. She left far too soon. To mark her birthday, I have uploaded the film documenting the early days of Tresor until its demise at Leipziger Strasse 126. This era is inextricably linked to her. Regina was a special person and the person who I was closest to, and who accompanied me for many years.
She was the person I trusted the most. I could always rely on Regina. She advised me well in all matters and stood by me, even in difficult times. Regina helped build up Tresor and characterised it with her own style. Without her, Tresor would be a different club.
The film is a special contemporary document and illustrates the failure of those politically and financially responsible at the time, who simply sold the historic property with the surviving steel chamber of the former Jewish department stores' Wertheim to one of the nameless development companies. 15 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they had still not recognised the potential of the newly emerging nightlife culture that is so important today. Tilmann Künzel's film, is a masterfully executed work with lots of material from the Tresor archive.
I would like to dedicate this film to Regina and thus keep her memory alive.
The history of the Tresor would be different without her, without her energy, drive, vision, creativity, discipline and ability to inspire and motivate others. She was one of those strong women who knew exactly what they wanted in a scene that was often still very male-dominated at the time - and who never let even the biggest machos intimidate her. As manager of Globus and Tresor (from 1991 to 2005), she steered and shaped the company. Later, she played a key role in shaping Kraftwerk - even when she was already battling her illness.
Her advice was always the most important to me, and if I didn't follow her advice, it often turned out to be a mistake in hindsight. She was incorruptible, unpretentious, straightforward and clear-sighted like few others.
Her true spirit was as convincing as it was infectious, as countless artists, Tresor visitors, employees and friends can attest.
She lived, loved and managed Tresor and nightlife - and mostly thought of others and the future: she founded the Tresor Foundation with me (whose board of trustees she chaired) so that cultural venues such as Kraftwerk and Tresor could be protected from speculation and live on for a long time. She has so often resolved tricky situations, never allowed herself to be confused even in the greatest chaos and always kept her cool. She never avoided an argument if it served the cause. She listened to her employees, time and time again. Which really left a lasting impression on my memory…
She was so open, honest, human and compassionate and one of the strongest women and people I've ever known - and she had such a great sense of humour that rarely failed her. She was a great, loving mum who, despite the sometimes crazy hours and times she spent working on our projects, was always there for her children and never forgot them.
Regina taught me what good friends really are and how important and valuable it is to have a good friend in your life. I am grateful that we were able to work, celebrate, live, discuss, argue, create new things and be friends with her for so long. And when I say "we", I don't just mean our teams at Tresor not just our teams at Tresor, Kraftwerk and the T31 exhibition, but I believe I am speaking on behalf of so many - not just in Berlin - who had the great pleasure and honour of knowing her, experiencing and learning to appreciate her as a friend, companion, colleague or even boss.
She left us on 21 July 2022 after a serious illness, which she fought extremely bravely for a long time.
We miss you, bella Regina."

@@theinspectah3438 The original Tresor club no longer exists, but there is a newer Tresor. There are still many great clubs in Berlin and a thriving techno scene. Kreuzberg has gentrified a lot, it used to be more run down. Berlin isn't the same as it was in the Tresor era, but I think it's still a cool place to visit, I recommend it.

Tresor-Bunker-EWerk… Berlins Bermudas Triangle… How many days and nights and weekends have been spent since '92... Everyone knew each other; it was one big family... And now, when we wanted to go in and see the new Trezor, there at the door were some young unfamiliar people, who didn't even exist in the '90s, they didn't let us in. Saying that we're old and would only bother the young people... None of our arguments about spending our youth in this club interested them... Oh, Trezor... You're not the same as you used to be; you've been devoured by the industry, and you've bowed down to it... What a shame... Never again….

I once had the luck to be there. I'm from Hungary and we were going to Love Parade. And the fun part was that we were hitchhiking all the way to Berlin from Budapest. We slept on a gas station once, the fog coming out from the forest. But then we got a Jaguar to take us all the way. We went to Tresor one night and at the time of Love Parade all these cool djs are in town. So Ellen Allien was playing outside in the courtyard area, the dirtiest electrotechno. I remember going down those ravaged stairs, entering the black, ear penetrating chaos down there. The other night we went to see Dj Hell and his label, Gigolos at an other party, and after Love Parade we went to some goa festival. We didn't have any money, so we had to collect garbage for 2 days to get free tickets for the whole week. In Berlin we were sleeping at some friends who I met before, when we were there to see Aphex Twin. We didn't even organized it, I just phoned their workplace when we arrived. I really don't know what was my plans for sleeping if that wouldn't have worked out. Then hitchhiking back home , we barely had money for food. It was fcked up, but good memories. :)

94 bis 98 war meine Zeit u.a. in diesem Wahnsinnsclub. Wir sind jedes Wochenende zwischen Tresor und E-Werk hin und her geswitcht und irgendwann am Sonntag im KitKat gelandet. Mittwochs wieder Tresor. Mit Glen oben an der Bar zum Garten konnte man immer richtig cool abfeiern. R.i.P. Glen Was für ein Glück, das erlebt haben zu dürfen. 🫶😁

When the 90th ended, Wired had a december issue with the title "The endless boom." Naivety squared in hindsight. But then we believed it. Somewhere in these docu is a grafity, Eat the Rich. The endless boom came but only for the rich. They turned chaos into money, disruption into a business model, money into power, and crisis into opertunities. And then the last civil freedoms went down the drain, "den wakkelraum." In this the Tresor exsisted. When it was gone, the scene had to professionalise and commercialize. That killed it.

Das war wirklich eine unglaubliche geile Zeit damals. Der Club und auch das Label. Aber wenn ich mir das anhöre was heute so auf dem Label veröffentlicht wird und die Clubpolitik vom Tresor so ansehe, hat sich der Tresor schon zu einem sehr traurigen Schatten seiner Selbst entwickelt. Wenn ich mir die Partys in Holland so betrachte, ist da der Spirit und der Sound von Techno noch vorhanden. Die Berliner Techno Szene empfinde ich bis auf wenige Djs/Produzenten nur noch als Satire. Anstatt das Label und den Club Tresor wieder zu dem zu machen was es/er war, reitet ihr die Nostalgiewelle.

Welche Partys/Clubs in Holland meinst du?

@@grizooo8411 Bezogen auf Holland kann ich da das „909 Festival“ und „Awakenings Festival“ sowie das „Loveland Festival“ empfehlen (Loveland hört sich etwas kitschig an, dort legen aber auch Leute wie Cari Lekebusch mit ihrem dreckigem Techno auf). Wer auf Gabber Techno steht, ist in Holland auch gut aufgehoben. In den Niederlanden sind die Clubs nicht so ausgeprägt, die großen Veranstaltungen dafür um so mehr. Geht auch gar nicht so um ein spezielles Land - in Polen ist die Technoszene mittlerweile auch sehr ausgeprägt. Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, wenn er im Ausland ist aufgrund von Urlaub oder Arbeit, die dortigen Clubs und Veranstaltungen aufzusuchen und die Stimmung dort, mit der Stimmung in den Berliner Clubs mal zu vergleichen.

Kraftwerk are definitely pioneers of popular electronic music but they're not quite techno, are they ? I believe the originators of techno always claimed to be influenced by the German sound though so a source for sure.

HI TRESOR IVE BEEN THERE 4 TIMES IN THE LAST YEAR AND I MUST SAY THE SOUND DOWNSTAIRS IN THE MAIN DANCE ROOM IS NOT GOOD WHY ITS TO BASS HEAVY THERE IS NO MID RANGE AND TOPS IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE A MUSH THERES NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE NO SHARP HI HTS JUST REALLY BAD AND IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED GO AND LISTEN YOURSELF WALK AROUND DOWN THERE THE SOUND UPSTAIRS IS GREAT
