Ok Kimmy, I have a theory! After Luna became Nightmare Moon and Celestia banished her, her powers were limited to simply raising and lowering the sun and moon. However with Luna no longer looking over the land of dreams, nightmares began to skyrocket and ponies blamed Nightmare Moon for initiating bad dreams, leading her to become an icon for holidays like NIghtmare Night. We see from this episode that Luna within the dream world has no power while Celestia has them, so while Celestia could use her magic to raise the moon, she can't enter dreams.

Also something I noticed. Celestia's day is usually scheduled down to the letter, with various meetings one after the other. However we have seen in other episodes Celestia likes to occasionally cause mischief, like inviting Discord to the gala. Yet Luna acts very dignified and takes everything seriously, yet rules over dreams; dreams by nature are abstract and are not usually logical. In theory, their personalities should work for the other's job, but maybe they can't deal with being serious/silly all day all the time. The abstract nature of dreams allows Luna to let off steam while Celestia acts silly to get out of her scheduled routine.

Yeah. Celestia wouldn't have controlled the dream realm while Luna was on the moon. Luna herself said that Celestia's magic has no power in the realm of sleep. Both here and in Do Princesses dream.

So Celestia *can* raise and lower the moon, maintaining a sense of order. But was there really harmony and balance? She never had Luna's night or dream powers. Luna stated that serious damage could happen to a ponies psyche if a terrible dream wasn't interrupted. So imagine all those ponies struggling with psychological issues for a thousand years, as Luna wasn't there and Celestia literally could not aid them in the dream realm. The peace of night, the ability to sleep itself, was out of balance, and a lot of ponies very likely suffered ill effects for the loss of Luna's balancing the scales. Think of it in the opposite way. Celestia smiling and cutting ribbons has ripple effects through society, Luna "scowling" for one photo had ill intended consequences. Was it life ending? No. But imagine the foals not going on their field trip. What if it was their fate to find their cutie marks on that field trip... then it never happens. Then the next day another group of ponies is effected. Then the next, and the next. And over time all these ill issues heap up into social discord. (

I've thought about the 1000 years w/o Luna. 1) Luna said "I have your powers, which don't work in the dream realm" 2) Celestia stats even when they were apart, she knew she needed Luna. So, I don't think anyone was watching the dream realm during the banashment. Perhaps it wasn't needed until ones like Discord, Sombra, Terik, et al started coming back.

I think all she did was raise the moon and go to bed. Like it says in do princesses dream of magic sheep, Celestia has "no power in the realm of sleep." That is Luna's domain, and hers alone. Celestia can't enter the dream realm without either Luna's help or possessing Luna's magic. So during Luna's banishment to the moon, everypony had to face their nightmares alone, without the help and advice of the princess of the night, or any other princess for that matter. That is what makes Luna so important to Equestria. Sure her sister could raise both the sun and moon, but only Luna can help others with their fears and dreams.

As stated in the episode, and the Episode "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep," Celestia has no power in the world of dreams. So as my understanding, she was never able to enter another pony's dream, even during the time of Luna's absence. This is quite literally the first time she has ever been able to enter the dreams of other ponies, and will likely be the last time as well.

With Celestia not knowing fully what Luna does, I think she never fully did Luna's job when she was banished. She didn't have access to Luna's magic so she couldn't enter the dream realm. She used her power boost she got (if Journal of the Two Sisters is close enough to cannon) from raising the sun to raise the moon as well as lower the sun. She would then get another boost to her magic by raising the sun while lowering the moon. She probably never bothered to even ask her sister what all she could do with her magic. So she may have not known about Luna being able to enter and handle ponies bad dreams. But this is sort of a guess given how Luna herself said Celestia held no power in the realm of sleep (and my expanding on that -> ) with her magic which is powered by that of the daylight.

in my understanding Celestial only raised the moon, she did not control the dream realm and that was left alone until Luna returned. Ponies dealt with their nightmares normally before she returned.

I'm not a big fan of Starlight and her shenanigans myself 😅 but I LOVE the Royal Sisters, this episode is definitely in my top favorites! I also thought it was weird for them to have this problem at all 😕 I mean, didn't they have that issue before? Isn't that how Luna ended up on the moon in the first place? I dunno 😞. And for Celestia not knowing about the dreamworld but still raised the moon in Luna's absence, I think that that was all she did that time. She raised the moon. That was all. She wasn't involved with the dream world, because that was (and is) solely Luna's domain.

Not really. NMM showed up due to Luna being jealous of all the attention that Celestia got, and she didn't. This was more like the reverse, Luna belittling Celestia's job (and attention), and Celestia belittling Luna's job, even though she didn't say so until Luna mentioned _her_ view.

Somehow I doubt that Celestia has ever been truly aware of everything Luna's position entails which I believe is part of what led to her becoming Nightmare Moon in the first place. As far as how Celestia had been managing other ponies dreams for the 1000 years Luna was imprisoned, honestly I don't think she ever did in part because she doesn't seem to have that particular ability and might not have even been aware of Luna's ability to jump into other ponies dreams. Seems more likely that Luna could have still performed her dream duties while imprisoned and might have even been much more attentive to doing so as it would have been the only way for interacting with anyone and going insane. Astral projecting into dreams doesn't really seem to have a limited radius so I doubt jumping from the moon and back would have been too much of an issue.

Given Daybreaker had a FiM card a while back, I doubt this will be the last we'd see of her. I mean, all dreams tend to reoccur once in a while when we sleep, like a old record we play without realizing til we wake up and sense deja vu. And now that Celestia knows of her counterpart, it's more than likely she'll keep fighting it in the dreamworld. Also, when you can, please support the Fallout Equestria Audiobook so it can be mass-published for everyone so no more forests will be cut down for a single book. It needs $19K more to be a reality.

I think its worth noting that literally the only threat to Equestria started by a dream was Luna's guilt driving her to create the Tantabus [well, there's also Discord, but he doesn't count because near-godlike powers] Starlight's nightmare was a complete anticlimax that had no threat over anyone

I mean, Starlight's fragile mental state was at stake. The girl's already messed up beyond belief, if they didn't stop that dream she'd probably have to hire a therapist. In any case, the low-stakes nature of the episode was actually kind of nice. At the very least, Starlight doesn't have to worry about accidentally destroying Equestria.

Because it is against "the rules". Because it turns out Twilight has to admit that Celestia is not perfect. Because Twilight is a major control freak with OCD tendencies and she can neither control Starlight nor feel she can trust her judgement. Because if some how Princess Celestia did have a friendship problem (not that she could because she is Princess Celestia) than it should be her faithful student and fellow Princess that solves it. Because when things could go wrong Twilight has a tendency to jump straight to worst case scenarios then proceeds as though that were a forgone conclusion. Twilight is a total head case, sometimes she is in closer connection with reality than others.

Definitely one of the better episodes. Aside from the great visuals (Daybreaker looks epic), I like how the writers really went all in on the sister dynamic. These two are...how old again? Yet for all their amassed wisdom and experience, they still are flawed. Well over a thousand years old, yet they seemed almost juvenile in some of their bickering. And, well, let's be honest...feuds with family are always the ones that are the most difficult.

Great Review KP. This was one of my favorite episodes season 7 because I love sister drama. They had some of the drama in the comics, but never in the show until now. That's what makes it such a great episode. Plus I agree Daybreaker was awesome.

We don't know if Discord was the one dreaming of him and the smooze having a pillowfight- it could have been the smooze's dream: being good enough buddies with Discord that it get to sleep over. Also had the thought that Daybreaker was just as much CELESTIAS nightmare as it was Starlights- I mean, her sister goes all supervillain, I'd imagine the thought of her doing the same would have crossed her mind once or twice over the centuries... Luna probably took her on herself after she got back- since she knew her name without being told...

I think the reason why Celestia had a hard time with Luna's job is that she didn't fill that role before Luna returned. Think about it, there's no way Celestia would pull all-nighters every night. Luna has stepped into a new role. As for whether Celestia had control of the dream realm, the comics kind of established that she did, but I'm pretty sure she didn't use that power much beyond shutting Nightmare Moon out of that realm. If any ponies had nightmares in the past millennium, they were most likely on their own.

One problem with this story, at least if you read the MLP comics and consider them cannon: way back in the early days of the comics there was a story where Luna decides to take over her sisters daytime duties for one day to find out firsthand (or hoof) what it's like and how hard it is. Here though she acts at the beginning like it's something she's never done before.

My thougths about this episode just give me clues about three characters 1) starligth glimmer has a weakness that is feeling guilty, blamming herself whenever things didn't work out during the dream sequence you can see if you compare seasson 5 premier to this scene where starligth glimmer starts blamming herself. 2) luna well i feel bad for all three of them anyway luna's dream kinda remind me bloody mary or a horror movie anyway luna has struggled and her weakness would be her past sins haunting her if you compare seasson 4 dream of magic sheep and this dream sequence of luna's nigthmare that gives me a clue that she fear feeling guilty for making a mistake that she cannot fix 3) and celestia the pony well if you know she has helped many ponies so in silver quils video he mentioned she is the queen archetype but problem is while she workinh in the dreams she lost control and begin to panic when danger rise and while her ponies are in disorder which in psychology

Celestia was never a dream keeper. The only thing she did at night was raise and lower the moon. For 1,000 years, ponies had no counsel or relief from their nightmares. Nightmare Moon still ruled, in a way, even from her prison.

about the switcheroo, Before, Celestia could not go into dreams because she lacked Luna's talent. It's a magic only she has so only she can enter the dreamscape and go into ponies dreams. Celestia only started raising the moon, nothin else.
