I am on a new musical journey! Clawhammer BANJO
i always knew that there was some banjo music that I really liked and some that was abrasive. I never knew that it depended on whether the player was using finger picks or not and the style in which they were playing.
if you follow my channel you may have seen that I have been sent a number of full size and mini 5 string Banjos. for every one of those unboxings and demonstrations I used the Bluegrass style because I didn't know there was any other style!!
well after i was sent the last banjo * a very nice starter instrument by Vangoa I decided to try and just noodle playing with my fingers and that is when I discovered this style of playing by googling "playing banjo with fingers
i joined a clawhammer group on face book called "Clawhammer Rules"
and bought a book by Wayne Erbersen, * the same author of the blue grass book .
anyway I just couldn't put it down. So i started watching a million videos and decided that I loved the sound of the 12 inch pot. It's a warmer deeper and fuller tone.
So i sold a few of my own instruments and had some amazon credits and it was also on a special price * which I've yet to see again
and I ordered it. Sadly the action was so high that it really hindered my enjoyment. So i put photos in the facebook group and the many folks had ideas of what to do. but one woman asked to see a photo of the heal. She said that might have been the problem. Then Wayne Rogers ( Goldtone's Owner) answered my post as well and said that I should call up his company and they would take care of me. He was right . David in customer service was wonderful and then the Luthier Nathan was amazing as well. He even did a facetime video with me to help diagnose the problem. He discovered that the screw had to have been stripped in the heal as I could not tighten it to get it flush with the pot. He concluded that something like that usually can only happen with a blunt force. Probably in shipping. He had David send me a pre paid label and I sent the instrument back. They send me a replacement very quickly and so I decided to do an unboxing to thank them for their amazing customer service and fantastic product!
I hope you enjoy the musical examples I have done here on the fly. I will be releasing a journal video diary of my progress. and showing the many songs here in full and different ones as well.
I hope you enjoy the video If you like my music and videos please like subscribe, share and comment. It is very much appreciated Also I have started to add music to my Spotify account so if you can please head over there and put me on some of your playlists. My 3 albums of NA flute music can be very relaxing!! but I have some new ambient tracks I'm uploading which include tongue drum , synths guitars and the like! Here is the link: open.spotify.c...
Thank you and be safe,
Maria

Awesome. I think you will love it. I still very much enjoy it ! Though I haven’t been playing as much as I should because I’ve been working on a few blues guitar courses and I am making progress and don’t want to lose my momentum. I will go back to clawhammer as soon as I finish the two courses which I’m 1/3 of the way through each :) Good luck with yours !

Awe thanks so much. I am still very much a beginner but I do love this instrument. I also bought the Goldtone nylon string but because it’s fretless. It’s a bit harder to not make mistakes. But it was very inexpensive and it does have painted frets which help quite a bit. Thanks again for commenting and your kind words.

Some really nice playing examples. You've really gotten good at the clawhammer technique. Watching this made me want to practice it more. I and terrible at clawhammer. Anyway, that looks like a really nice banjo. I like the maple finish.

Awe thanks so much. Yes I bet if you got into it you would be fantastic on this type of playing And yes I love the Finish and the woods and the way this banjo plays and sounds. The 12 inch pot and the tone ring give it a deeper warmer sound. Next I want to try nylon string clawhammer lol

@@musicalmiscellany I remember when you built it!! I had never seen a banjo with nylon strings except for banjoleles. But in the clawhammer world it’s a big big thing. Most of the high end banjos made by luthiers use nylon string ajd the sound just seems wamer. But they cost any where from 1500 and up. Seems like that like a good Taylor or Martin starts in that range. But for me now this is a perfect instrument to learn. Eventually I would love one of those handmade ones with nylon strings. One day :)

Fantastic you are doing a brilliant job in fact your other videos are just as interesting.. I have a 12” Bob Carlin, since I got mine a year ago my clawhammer style has got a feeling of freeness. I modified my “BC~ 350 Bob Carlin banjo” first I changed the head or skin in 2 ways, I got a Remo 12”fiberskyn. Then a brass 12” Dobson tone ring I also changed the tail piece. It took some thinking but I put it all together and it sounds brilliant the tone has become wholesome and just wonderful to play. I’m on the KZbin check me out some…mad cool..🪕🪕🪕
