For the international fans, here's the translation of the litterally moving interview (which was recorded at four locations). 4 x 15 questions for Ilse DeLange Question: Ilse: Question: Hi Ilse, Where are we and for what reason? Ilse: We are in Nashville, which is my second home, so for me it makes sense to be here. Question: What's the name of your new album and why? Ilse: My new album is called "Gravel & Dust". It is one of the album tracks and it matched the mood of the album perfectly. Question: There are always favorite songs on an album, which is yours and for what reason? Ilse: "Gravel & Dust", because it gives the best impression of the album, soundwise. Another favorite of mine is "Went For A While" Question: Who is T Bone Burnett and how did you get to know about him? Ilse: The man painted on the fence is T Bone Burnett. I know him from his great productions, too many to sum up, but an example is the album of Robert Plant and Alison Kraus "Raising Sand", which is a beautiful album! Question: How did the two of you meet? Ilse: Thanks to a mutual friend. Question: What happened during that encounter and what was it like? Ilse: We drank coffee together and then I followed him in my car to his studio. It was very nervewrecking for me, to meet a man of his stature. Question: how soon afterwards did you start recording the album? Ilse: If I remember correctly, we were in the studio about two and a half months after the first meeting. Question: Where did you record the album? Ilse: Right here. Question: What's this place called? Ilse: This is The House Of Blue Studios Question: Why did you choose these studios? Ilse: it's because T Bone works here often. Question: Why is that? Ilse: Welll, he probably likes being here. He knows the acoustics of the different spaces and how the sound engineerings instruments are fantastic here. Question: Did he have certain ideas in mind, referring to the sound? Ilse: In fact he did: he wanted to have a dulcimer be the central instrument of the album. Question: What exactly is a dulcimer? Ilse: It's an old string instrument, often played in the mountains, the so called mountain music. Question: How long did it take to record the full album? Ilse: We spend a good week recording here. Question: Had all the songs already been written, or did you write new ones here? Ilse: Everything was finished, we did not write any new material. Question: Where do you prefer writing when you are in Nashville? Ilse: I like it best to write at home, as I like the way I sound there. Question: Who were the studio musicians? Ilse: The studio musicians of the first recordings were Russ Pahl, Dennis Crouch and Ilya Toschinsky Question: Did you work with these musicians before? Ilse: With some of them, indeed I did work. Ilya and Russ have played on my records before, Dennis was new to me. Question: As a singer, did you learn something new from T Bone? Ilse: In fact, T Bone insisted that I would relax more, which was not easy at first, working with a country music icon did overwhelm me a bit. Question: Being in the studio for a week, what do you eat? Ilse: Often, we had food delivered, in order not to break the flow we were in. We ate a lot of Vietnamese food, yet a stack of hamburgers was ordered as well.... had something to do with a certain type of sigaret.... Question: Are there any cool trivia about T Bone Burnett? Ilse: Well, he always comes to the studio wearing a suit. Question: Which albums did you record in Nashville? Ilse: "Next To Me", "Incredible" "World Of Hurt", my previous album "Ilse DeLange" and of course my latest album "Gravel & Dust" Question: Which of these albums is your favorite? Ilse: My latest album is always my favorite, so it is "Gravel & Dust". Question: What would be your second favorite album? Ilse: My first one, "World Of Hurt"; that's how everything got started. Question: Can you tell us a cherished memory related to this album? Ilse: There are so many! One of which was that everything was new to me! Next, it was very impressive to meet all of the musicians that I knew by name (from the cd booklets). It was surreal to see them enter the studio like that. Question: Is Nashville for you the favorite place to record an album? Ilse: it certainly is one of the favorite places for recording! Question: What is the difference between the Americans and the Dutch? Ilse: There are too many differences to sum up. Question: What is the difference between the Americans and the Dutch musicians? Ilse: Ttoo many differences to sum up. Question: Who is your favorite Dutch artist? Ilse: That's a lady I admire very much: Judy Blank Question: Who is your favorite Nashville artist? Ilse: There are so many! Most recently, I discovered I connect very well with Russ Pahl, the steel pedal guitarist. Question: Which do you like best, writing in The Netherlands or in Nashville Ilse: Generally, I prefer writing in Nashville. Question: Do you prefer writing with Dutch musicians, or with American musicians? Ilse: I like a combination best! Question: where do you like best to spend your time? Ilse: I very much enjoy being in Nashville! Question: You live here as well, right? Ilse: I do have a place here. Question: Where exactly? Ilse: I keep that to myself! Question: We are eating out for breakfast now. Do you take your breakfast every morning? Ilse: Yes, I always do! Question: What do you take for breakfast? Ilse: Among other things, eggs and coffee. Question: for how long have you lived here? Ilse: Well, I have been coming to Nashville for over twenty years, but I only bought a house here four years ago. Question: Are you getting tired of living here? Ilse: NO! Question: What Dutch food do you miss most when you are here? Ilse: Dutch biscuits (sort of toast) with chocolate sprinkles. Question: You are very much engaged with Dutch musical talents. Which of the new ones would stand a good chance to break through in Nashville? Ilse: Joe Buck! Question: What should anyone do on their first visit to Nashville? Ilse: You should start by getting drunk on Broadway and 2nd Avenue, which is the tourist paradise. After that, they should listen to really good music at the venues like Station Inn and the Ryman Auditorium, all the venues surrounding the tourist attractions. Question: Did you check all the tourist attractions on the list, yourself? Ilse: I think so! Question: Why is Nashville so important to you? Ilse: Nashville embodies everything that inspires me. Question: When did you come here for the first time and what was the reason for your visit? Ilse: It must have been 1996 or 1997. I had been invited by Warner Brothers for demo-recording, to check if I would fit into their roster. Question: Has a lot changed since then? Ilse: Only my life! Question: who was the very first person you met here? Ilse: Most likely Rob Crosby. Question: Could you ever live here for the rest of your life? Ilse: That is still conflicting for me, I could not tell. Question: Last question: what message do you have for your fans at home? Ilse: Enjoy a good cup of coffee! :)
