The chain design has been used for many years in FWD transmissions the chain will outlast the car. In my experience (40 plus years a dealer mechanic now retired) anything new is never going to work. But given 5 to 10 years becomes the norm. Example: FWD, Electronic fuel injection, electronic ignition, ABS brakes, Air Bags, heck even seat belts they all had great detractors, we don't give them a second thought today.

I just purchased a 2018 Forester, I traded in a 2012 Forester with 35,000 , his and hers shift with 3 speeds. Great car, nice pickup at higher speeds, and fun to drive in the city. My brand new Forester ( 11 miles on it when purchased) now has 1152 miles on it. I was incapacitated as far as any lengthy driving for about 10 weeks in between the 3 months of ownership . Since I wasn't able to drive much of anywhere, except to medical appointments, the grocery store and the pharmacy. This period was all city driving during snowy and slush. My wife hasn't driven for over 25 years , after near fatal vehicle accident. I am the sole driver of the " vehicle. After the weather cleared a month back , I was able to road test my new ride and I was comfortable that everything was broke in just fine. After some field testing .My independent testing including hill climbing , acceleration, standing start and most important R to D and D to R , cold , warm and hot. I feel like I gave away a very good car , with a responsive throttle and excellent hauling capacity. The new Forester has all the performance of a Roto- Tiller and sadly , with just over 1100 miles on it , I'm hearing noises I would expect from a transfer case in an old tractor. The Forester feels like you're wheeling around in golf cart with an old centrifugal clutch. And even worse , when going from Reverse to Drive, plan on being a sitting duck as traffic run up on you With your extra waiting time , sitting there , you can take two drags on a Marlboro ( if you smoke) and a sip of coffee, while the Subaru decides if and when it wants to go forward. It doesn't seem to matter weather you sneak up on the gas pedal and fit YOUR driving habits to placate the CVT and play " Mr. nice driver" or slam the gas pedal to the floor, the car sits in the street for anywhere form 3 to 5 seconds. Subaru's disastrous decision to continue with an engineering design that was already a mechanical problem and and basically a very poorly tested is an engineering and customer failure disaster. This company is bleeding so fats, they better just refit the new cars with the old 3 speed . I see NO possible chance for enough improvement. The design should have been scrapped 3 tears ago and the dead horse it's engineers are beating is just not going to get up, and if the company continues to band aid this problem, I see financial ruin for this car manufacturer. The early overhead valve Ford Y- block V/8 engines from 1954 until 1961 are an excellent example of a very large company approving and installing a very bad design. The engine was a heavy thick wall casting ( as were most in those days) but the Y-Block also had a very poor cylinder head design featuring " stacked , horizontal intake ports on both intake manifold and heads. Also very poor top end oiling to reach the rocker arms. The Lineartronic transmission was approved to maximize profits , while touting safety ( year right) and saying, look, better gas mileage, you can't help get better mileage, because you go Subaru , especially a 4 cylinder Boxer engine mated 2 a CVT , don't expect ANY driver feedback or useful power while accelerating. Just do whatever the cars says and you'll be fine. This company has a beautiful engine. Sadly , it was castrated in 2014, when they decided to go with the CVT. Guess who pays ???

Probably been sitting around too long. Most newer cars these days switching to CVT transmissions because they work better with the Adaptive Cruise Control that these newer cars have. That's why they got rid of manual transmissions because those wouldn't be as efficient. Also CVT's work better with the Automatic Emergency Braking systems on newer cars.

I have had a Subaru forester 1997 (automatic) from new, that has been great for all the years with very little to do other than annual services. However, recently I have had a lot of vibration & shuddering on the wheels when making tight turns (left or right). It is difficult to identify which wheels the noise or shudder comes from and I don't feel much through the steering wheel. I have had all difs replace that has reduced the frequency but not always. We hope it isn't the automatic gear box but has anyone got any ideas what to do next.

First, ask the technician if he uses an OBD reader to change the fluid. If he says no; leave the shop and find another. Use only Subaru CVT fluid due to the transmission is highly sensitive, both engineered to precise fluid viscosity (thickness) and denoted color. It's not a simple drain & fill. The temperature of the CVT fluid must be between 96-103F for the final fill and residual fluid flushed out through the system heat-exchanger hose on the left side of the transmission. There is a neighboring gearbox that takes 75W-90 gear oil and you must be familiar with the location of both fill plug and the drain plugs of each of these separate housings. Gear oil destroys CVT's CVT fluid destroys gearboxes.

@charlesnoble7470
@charlesnoble7470 3 жыл бұрын
The factory promotes it as a no-maintenance component; a totally illogical assumption because of CVT fluids breakdown from natural evaporation and condensation within the transmission housing for every warmup & cooldown. Subaru owner blogs prove CVT failure before 100,000 miles, if not regular fluid changes at 20,000 miles to 30,000 intervals. It costs $300 each time but it beats paying $3000.00 to $5000.00 for a replacement CVT transmission before 100,000 miles. CVT transmissions shouldn't be driven aggressively when they are cold. Internal CVT fluid needs to be warmed to engine temperatures. Use only Subaru CVT fluid due to the transmission is highly sensitive, both engineered to precise fluid viscosity (thickness) and denoted color. It's not a simple drain fill. The temperature of the fluid must be between96-103F and flushed out through the fluid heat-exchanger hose.

Yes. And no. There is a clutch and differential on the AWD models. Insert country availability here. The system allows for a better control of power from front to rear. In my opinion having a decouple ability from the rear wheels and an advantage over the viscos coupler and the center diff coupler that is my WRX. My crosstrek is way more predictable on ice than the wrx.
@SubaruAmbassadorRobert
@SubaruAmbassadorRobert 4 жыл бұрын
No. It means that by removing the tail shaft and interconnect gears, you can have front wheel drive. Subaru doesn't sell front wheel drive Subies in the United States. It's just a possible design use. The WRX is 55/45 power split, front to rear, using the "Current" (TR690) Lineartronic. The Ascent and Outback XT and outgoing Outback 3.6R and Foz XT is 60/40 using the TR690. The 4 cylinder naturally aspirated models are 60/40 using the ("New") TR580 CVT.

@@SubaruAmbassadorRobert I did say insert country availability here. Sorry I didn't give the torque bias distribution in a nominal driveing environment. With overall lock up being 50/50 in extreme cases. How ever there default mode I.E. Limp mode for the CVTs is FWD. To limit the potential heat in the transmission and subsequent fluid. Regardless of fwd or awd. The symmetrical part remains the same being that the drive axles on the left and the right are the same length. This eliminates torque steering a common problem in a transverse mounted drive train be it FWD or Awd configuration. You also lose efficiency in a transverse awd system because you have to change the direction of power 90 degrees to transmit the power to the rear wheels. A tipical set up is with a pinion set.Some just driven off the right side transaxle. Not a true Awd but some manufacturers like to think so. Anyway I have a I have an ej25b I need to get finished for my WRX.

On top of all the other problems that emerge every day. All you need to do is google “ Subaru recalls” and you’ll be constantly flooded with new issues concerning Subaru reliability..... no other car manufacturers have such a bad record!!!! You have been warned!! And people, DO NOT BE FOOLED By SOME TROLLS HIRED , employed, commissioned by Subaru to argue this claims, all they are doing is DAMAGE CONTROL !!!

Drive the car to 29 MPH, then let off the throttle by removing your foot from the gas peddle. the car will start to buck and shudder. The torque converter will finally unlock around 10 MPH and you will feel a surge. Repeat the steps to simulate a traffic situation. If you have an OBD app or scanner capable of reading CVT temperature you will watch the CVT get hotter and more quirky drive-train issues will be felt (Bucking, square wheel feeling, warped rotor feel, like a manual transmission left in gear. Stumble and shuddering when excelling from a stop, eventually the car will surge forward at a stop light . This problem will get worse with age and eventually the CVT will fail). The 2014 XV I owned started this at 12K miles and it was a normal occurrence at 75K when I traded it (Subaru called it normal engine braking) . FYI I took newer Crosstreks and Outbacks on a test drive, these symptoms were present.

@@charlesnoble7470 it was actually a bad 7to13 pin trailer adapter that caused the issues. My transmission wasn't to blame in this case. Brake override cut the power to the engine. Because the car believed trailer was braking. I didn't know that the original comment wasn't deleted. This summer I've pulled a 1200kg caravan for 20-30hours and it the car worked great. But I will not stretch my luck and pull a heavier caravan with cvt transmission. Max tow capacity is 1500kg but I'm keeping it below 1300kg to be safe. And I'm only going max 80km/h. While climbing I'm often below 70km/h to keep cvt temperature down.

Comparing the new modern automatic transmission technologies (DCT/DSG Vs. CVT) it appears both are equally complex, both have reputations for unreliability compared to a planetary automatic and clutched manual, the manual is still the simplest, most robust and most reliable. Comparing CVT to DCT/DSG, the DCT is clearly superior, it’s more robust, has a crisper feel, and feels closer to a true manual, as it has physical gears transferring power The CVT only advantage over the DCT is fuel efficiency, everything else is inferior, driving feel, responsiveness, enjoyment. If I had to choose a modern automatic, it’d be a DCT/DSG, it feels the closest to a true manual CVT has potential, it just needs to become more robust and more reliable, the biggest problem is wear from the chain on the variators, that’s the biggest design flaw, metal on metal contact

2019 Subaru CVT's don't need to be serviced until 90,000 miles. So there's no maintenance cost on it until then. Most car manufacturers are switching to CVT transmissions because most newer cars have Adaptive Cruise Control and Automatic Emergency Braking which is more forgiving then a regular automatic transmission and not very practical with a manual transmission.
