"Im grünen Wald, dort wo die Drossel singt" is a poem by the Silesian poet Friederike Kempner. The song also bears the title: ‘Song of the Little Deer’ or is also known as the ‘Black Forest Song’. Friederike Kempner was also known as the ‘Silesian Swan’ or ‘Silesian Nightingale’ due to her poems, which were often close to nature and their aesthetic. The text was probably written in the middle to end of the 19th century.
The melody to the song was written by the Berlin musician Max Oscheit, who mainly composed light music at the beginning of the 20th century.
Nowadays, the song can still be found in hunting and "Schützen" circles sometimes.
Translated text:
1. In the green forest, where the thrush sings
And in the bushes the lively little deer leaps,
where firs and spruces stand at the edge of the forest,
I spent the most beautiful dream of my youth.
2. The youthful years have long since fled,
that he experienced as a young hunter's son.
He took the rifle, knocked it against a tree
and said life is just a dream.
The version was played by the music corps of the Berlin police under the direction of Obermusikmeister Heinz Winkel.
