If you are giving an intramuscular injection then getting the site correct is crucial or you might risk causing damage to a nerve or a blood vessel.

FYI: Landmarking for ventrogluteal site is wrong . If pt laying on Rt side, use Rt hand and place it on their greater trochanter, depending on the length of your fingers you would then place your index finger on the ASIS (or point your finger in that direction). Your thumb pointed to the groin, all other fingers should be pointed at the patient's head. Form the triangle with the index and middle finger and the center of that triangle is the injection site for a ventrogluteal injection.

I wish doctors and nurses would make it clear to patients that they have a CHOICE. I had a horrendous experience when I had my first child. I know women who were traumatised by being given injections in personal areas when they could have had a choice of a different site. Health care professionals seem to think it isn't a big deal because it's "over in a minute". Hope this is helpful to you students - be sensitive! Thanks :)

Some of it depends on which medication and how much. You don't want a medication that really stings or is thick in a small muscle like the deltoid. You also don't want more than 1-2 mL in the arm. You might think nurses are being mean but most of the time they are trying to give you the safest care possible. Sometimes they could explain it much better, though.

@Jojoseahorse It's not a choice. Actually, every area works faster or slower, it depends on where you apply it because of the absortion of the drug, and how fast you do need it inside of you.

@s412100000 Well thank you for passing an opinion on someone you don't even know! Why would I panic - I'm not scared of needles. I do object to unnecessary shit being done. When I had my first child I was not given the option to stay home (falsely told it was "illegal"); you can be sure all my subsequent ones were born at home. No injections or medical stuff either, and we were all just fine :)

Thank you Pete. The hospital at which I gave birth gave the choice of the butt or the leg. I would have absolutely preferred the arm, but I assumed that there was some reason it couldn't be given there. I subsequently found out that some practices only give it in the arm, like you describe, but there are some that only give it in the butt! I honestly think some of these nurses and doctors are sadists. Lucky all my other kids were Rh neg :)

Some of it depends on how much medication is being given. You don't want to give more than 2 mL into the deltoid area--too much med for that small space. Also, some meds sting like crazy (Phenergan, for example) and you really want that in a larger muscle.
