Wow, I think this was the funniest I've even seen John be: The Maurice impression (really good); the remarks about moving bong-cloud King and then all pawns ("Big Brained chess"); his self-description as a long-game con man....Love it.

I considered myself a fan, and then John dropped "Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more than an hour ago" . . . now I'm a huge fan:) Conditioner is better!

It appears Thomas Chess was more curious and wanting to learn than trying to be sleasy, though still not ok. Donating to Lichess is a viable way to make up for it.

Lol I was dying about the whole 'hunting easy content' bit lol. Glad John could laugh about it, definitely a cranky GM there.

I think John is thinking of luck in terms of randomness, like being dealt a card in poker. And it’s true, there doesn’t seem to be anything like ‘being dealt’ something in chess. However, if we think of luck more broadly, in terms of avoiding difficulties thanks to forces outside our control, then I can think of at least two other kinds of chess-luck: 1) making a good move for bad reasons-like he says in one of the early games “I’ll move my rook back and pretend I saw that”, and 2) the opponent being blind to something they ‘should have’ seen.

It was sad the alekhine game was cut because the cheat detection, when I've just been trying to learn the opening.

@johnbartholomew - I believe Magnus’ comment was the he hates playing against computers because “it’s like playing an idiot who always beats you”. (Not sure if he was deliberately referencing Nimzowich, but it has echoes of his famous tantrum).
